Mets’ Pete Alonso obliterates bat in frustration vs. Giants

Pete Alonso broke his bat over his knee in disgust after striking out in the third inning against Conner Menez, but said his frustration was over that particular at-bat, not anything bigger. “I was just upset because I shouldn’t have swung at that pitch — it was a ball,” Alonso said after the Mets lost 3-2 to the Giants in 12 innings in San Francisco on Sunday. “I know I am better than that. I hold myself to a high standard and I was just frustrated.” Michael Conforto’s “splash hit” that landed in McCovey Cove was the 47th such home run by an opponent in the history of Oracle Park. Curtis Granderson had been the last Mets player to homer into McCovey Cove, on Aug. 19, 2016 against Johnny Cueto. The Mets’ 44 home runs on the road since June 1 lead the major leagues. Adeiny Hechavarria started at second base to give Robinson Cano a day off. Hechavarria went 0-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout. The Mets, in conjunction with the New York Blood Center, will sponsor their semi-ann...

Fleetwood was taught lesson by Shane Lowry

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Tommy Fleetwood went to school on Sunday. His teacher was Shane Lowry. Fleetwood, who finished second to Lowry in the British Open at Royal Portrush, was gutted in the end about not winning his first career major, but he vowed to take something out of Sunday’s experience. He began the day four shots behind Lowry and finished six behind after shooting 74 to Lowry’s 72. “I think first and foremost, whatever happened was going to be an experience and you were going to take things from it,’’ Fleetwood said. “That’s the first time I’ve played in the last group of a major on a Sunday. You learn things as you go. You learn things about yourself. “I watched Shane win the Open. I watched how he conducted himself and how he played, and for four rounds of golf I was the second-best player in the event, which is a great achievement. You have to look at it like that. I’m sure in a few hours or a couple of days I might see that. “I think I played a lot of very, ver...

Teen says he leaked memos that exposed UK ambassador’s Trump criticism

A 19-year-old Brexit Party staffer claims he was behind the secret memo leak that exposed UK ambassador Kim Darroch’s insulting emails about President Trump — and ultimately led to his resignation earlier this month. “Tens of thousands of words have been devoted to speculation about the motivation behind the disclosure,” wrote Steven Edginton, a self-described journalist, in a piece published Sunday by the Daily Mail. “Today I want to set the record straight and reveal the real story about how Sir Kim’s diplomatic cables entered the public domain.” Edginton, who works as a digital strategist for Nigel Farage’s anti-EU party, claimed to have gotten the leaked emails — in which Darroch blasted Trump as a “pompous fool” and his administration as “utterly dysfunctional” — from a “trusted source.” He said he worked for several months on a story with political journalist Isabel Oakshott about the exposed correspondence between Darroch and Foreign Office officials in London, but ended up...

Where Andres Gimenez fits into Mets’ shortstop uneasiness

Of course Andres Gimenez tuned in from his Binghamton apartment to watch Pete Alonso win the Home Run Derby. “Knew he was going to win it,” the Mets’ top prospect said over the phone Friday through interpreter Ender Chavez who doubles as the Double-A Rumble Ponies bench coach. With conviction in the air, The Post asked whether the shortstop thought he would have a better view of the Alonso show next season from Citi Field. The 20-year-old Venezuelan declined to answer, though the Mets eventually might have to. It is no secret the club is considering moving current shortstop, Amed Rosario, to center field. The 23-year-old Rosario — formerly the Mets’ top prospect — appeared to be solid defensively at shortstop in the minors, but has had his problems in the field this season. That combined with a lack of depth in center has fueled talk of a position switch. “Defensively he is real good,” a scout said of Gimenez. “He has got quick feet, soft hands and a strong and accurate throwing a...

Horror stories mount about delivery workers

Cindy Orozco didn’t expect to be punched in the head by a delivery worker when she arrived at her job at Good Pizza in Los Angeles last March. The blow came from an enraged food delivery worker who stormed into the tiny pizzeria demanding, “Where’s my f—ing order.” When she told him it wasn’t ready, he threw the contents of a tip jar across the small Playa Del Ray eatery, according to interviews and surveillance video footage obtained by The Post. Things escalated when Orozco and the courier — who was sent to Good Pizza by food delivery giant DoorDash — got into a physical confrontation. The courier fled — without the order. The violent incident is the latest in a growing number of horror stories from restaurateurs who say they are being forced into heated interactions with angry delivery people — thanks to big tech companies like DoorDash that motivate their couriers to move quickly and handle high volumes. “These companies like DoorDash claim to do heavy background checks, but ...

Nicole Kidman rips Meryl Streep up

An underwhelming series finale of “Big Little Lies” was highlighted by the evisceration of Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep) on the witness stand by her daughter-in-law Celeste (Nicole Kidman). Celeste’s legal strategy for making sure her mother-in-law did not get custody of her twins was to interrogate Mary Louise about a car accident that led to the death of her son, Raymond, which probably happened 40 years ago. Mary Louise lost her temper and apparently blamed the tragedy on poor Perry (Alexander Skarsgärd). Executive producer David E. Kelley links this single incident to Perry’s well-documented marital abuse of Celeste, which she played on video (shot by one of her young twins) in the courtroom, shocking everyone — including the other members of the “Monterey Five” and Mary Louise herself. With his brilliant track record of success on network TV, Kelley naturally would try to give nearly everyone a happy ending. Ed and Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) renewed their wedding vows o...

Giancarlo Stanton’s injury status leaves Yankees in the dark

Giancarlo Stanton is closing in on a month since he sprained his right knee on an awkward slide in a win over the Blue Jays, and the Yankees are no closer to knowing when the slugger might return. “It’s better, but still slow,’’ Aaron Boone said of Stanton’s recovery before the Yankees lost to the Rockies on Sunday, 8-4. “He’s not doing baseball activities yet. He continues to work on stabilizing things to get the quad built up and strong.” Stanton has received treatment at Yankee Stadium, where he remained during the homestand, but he has played in just nine games this season, bothered by biceps, shoulder and quad injuries before sustaining the June 25 knee injury. “It’s moving slow, but in talking to him, he feels like he’s making progress,’’ Boone said. “The first couple of weeks were a little frustrating.’’ The Yankees have done just fine without Stanton, thanks to contributions from outfielders Aaron Judge, Aaron Hicks and Brett Gardner — although Gardner missed Sunday’s game...

Dead body identified 20 years later through daughter’s DNA

Authorities in Indiana were able to identify a dead body found 20 years ago with the help of DNA technology and are hoping to solve the murder case. The woman — Tina L. Cabanaw of Detroit — was IDed by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department who used an FBI lab in Virginia, the National Missing Persons DNA Database, and a genetic genealogy database. They finally confirmed Cabanaw’s identity after using a DNA test of her daughter, Jessica Gallegos of Colorado. “I was starting to lose the hope. It was 20 years later when I got the call,” Gallegos told The Herald-Republican. “It was over.” Cabanaw was reported missing to the Detroit Police Department in July 1999. Her body was found outside of Angola, Indiana, on Sept. 6, 1999, in an area that is now a golf course. Authorities estimated that the body had been there for several weeks. The Northeast Indiana Forensic Center conducted an inconclusive autopsy, authorities said. “The cause of death was ruled undetermined but highly susp...

Mike Mussina has Hall of Fame question he needs answered

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — There was an almost around nearly every turn. Shortcomings used to identify Mike Mussina’s career. Good, just not great. He never won a World Series, despite reaching the final round of the postseason twice. He never won a Cy Young Award, though he finished in the top-six nine times. He failed to win 300 games, coming 30 victories short. Perhaps, Mussina said, he was waiting for the right moment to reach the mountain top. “Maybe I was saving up from all of those almost achievements for one last push,” the pitcher said Sunday, as he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, alongside former Yankees teammate Mariano Rivera, Lee Smith, Harold Baines, Edgar Martinez and the late Roy Halladay at Clark Sports Center. “This time, I made it.” Mussina, 50, goes in with a blank hat, after playing 10 years for the Orioles and eight for the Yankees. He was a five-time All-Star in Baltimore, but his biggest moments came in The Bronx. Seventeen of the 23 playoff...

Louisiana cop says AOC ‘needs a round,’ as in should be shot

A Louisiana police officer is under fire for suggesting in Facebook comments that New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “needs a round.” Charlie Rispoli, a 14-year veteran of the Gretna Police Department on Thursday called the Democratic lawmaker a “vile idiot” who “needs a round, and I don’t mean the kind she used to serve,” nola.com reported. The officer was apparently implying that Ocasio-Cortez should be shot and referencing her past gig as a bartender. Rispoli posted the since-deleted missive as a caption to a story he shared from the satirical Web site tatersgonnatate.com, with the headline: “Ocasio-Cortez on the Budget: ‘We Pay Soldiers Too Much,’ ” according to a screenshot captured by nola.com. Though the photo on the post is marked as “satire” and was labeled “false” by the Web site Snopes.com, it appears Rispoli was upset by the story. The post was taken down by Friday afternoon and Rispoli’s page appeared to be deactivated by Saturday, nola.com reported. Police Chie...

Pat Shurmur can’t mess up this Giants challenge

As training camp approaches, Post NFL columnist Steve Serby looks at the biggest characters in the world of the Jets and Giants. Dave Gettleman doesn’t only need to be right about Daniel Jones. He needs to be right about Pat Shurmur. Because Jones’ development will be in Shurmur’s hands now. The passing of the torch from Eli Manning — when and why — will be determined by Shurmur. There were two overriding reasons why Gettleman hired Shurmur and ownership signed off on him: He was an adult. He was a quarterback whisperer and superior offensive play-caller. Shurmur was deemed to be the right man at the right time to squeeze whatever was left out of Manning’s right arm and simultaneously groom his successor one day. We now know that one day will arrive, and it will arrive sooner rather than later. And whenever it happens — sometime this season or at the beginning of the 2020 season — Shurmur will have to be certain that the kid will not be a Big Blue deer in the headlights. Sh...

Shark leaps at Cape Cod fishing boat near young boy on deck

It’s Jaws-dropping video! A great white shark was filmed leaping out of the water at a fishing boat — snapping up a fish right next to where a young boy was standing. The wild video starts innocently with a passenger slowly pulling in a fish on the Columbia Sportfishing boat in Cape Cod Bay on Saturday. Without warning, the shark — later confirmed as a great white — leaps out to snatch the fish as young Jack Nelson jerks back in horror. “Holy shizzle! Dad that was at my fingers! I almost don’t have any arms,” cried Nelson in the full footage shared with New England Cable News (NECN). “I didn’t know what to do. It was shocking,” Nelson, who was with four friends as well as his family, told the station. The video was captured by his dad, Doug Nelson, who immediately cried, “I got that on video!” “Just a crazy fishing story that the shark came to the boat and gave us a pretty good scare,” Nelson told NECN. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy confirmed it was a great white, acc...

Fan strolls onto field in bizarre Pirates-Phillies scene

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A fan casually walked to home plate and approached Philadelphia hitter Brad Miller for a handshake before being apprehended, and the Phillies later beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Sunday on Rhys Hoskins’ home run in the 11th inning. Moments after Bryce Harper argued a called third strike and Hoskins spiked his bat after being hit by a pitch, things turned bizarre in the sixth inning at PNC Park. That’s when a man carrying a cellphone came out of the crowd and strolled toward Miller in the batter’s box. Miller backed away and the man kept walking, leisurely getting near the Phillies’ dugout on the first base side, where he was handcuffed by security personnel and led away. Miller then grounded into an inning-ending double play. Georgia lawmaker says man told her ‘go back where you came from’

A black Georgia lawmaker says a white man cursed her out at a supermarket and told her to “go back where you came from.” Democratic State Rep. Erica Thomas said in a tear-filled Facebook Live video that she was in the express lane at a Publix in Mableton Friday with her daughter, when a man became enraged over the number of items she had. “This white man comes up to me and says ‘You lazy son of a bitch. You need to go back where you came from,’ ” Thomas recalled in the clip. “I said ‘Sir, you don’t even know me. I’m not lazy I’m nine months pregnant,” Thomas continued, through sobs. “It hurt me so bad.” On Saturday, the lawmaker was being interviewed in front of the grocery store by WSB-TV, when Eric Sparkes, the man she’d accused of berating her showed up. In a televised confrontation, Sparkes denied telling Thomas to “go back” where she came from — but admitted he’d called her a “lazy bitch.” “That’s the worst thing I said,” Sparkes told Thomas. She replied: “Ok. Because that...

Mets’ late-inning heartbreak goes on in loss to Giants

SAN FRANCISCO — Extra, extra, it’s nine innings or bust for the Mets. For the third time in four games, the Mets and Giants on Sunday played into extra innings. And like in the previous two instances, the Mets cracked, wasting a strong starting pitching performance. Mike Yastrzemski’s walk-off homer against Robert Gsellman in the 12th inning sunk the Mets in a 3-2 loss at Oracle Park that pushed them nine games below .500. Gsellman, in his second inning of work, recorded one out before Yastrzemski hit a shot to left field that kept carrying until it cleared the fence. The Mets finished 5-4 on the road trip, which also included stops in Miami and Minnesota. These two teams played for nearly five hours on Thursday and it was settled when Mets rookie Chris Mazza allowed two runs in the bottom of the 16th after Pete Alonso had homered in the top of the inning. On Friday, the Giants scored the only run of the game against Jacob Rhame in the 10th inning when Dominic Smith dropped Alex...

Tainted alcohol killed 19 people in Costa Rica last month

At least 19 people in Costa Rica have died after drinking alcohol tainted with toxic levels of methanol, local officials said Sunday. The Costa Rica Ministry of Health said fourteen men and five women ranging in age from 32 to 72 died in June from what appeared to be methanol poisoning, local outlet the Tico Times reported. They were not immediately identified. The Ministry of Health warned against consuming booze from a number of brands because samples had tested positive for methanol adulteration. Affected brands include Guaro Montano, Guaro Gran Apache, Aguardiente Estrella, Aguardiente Barón Rojo, Aguardiente Timbuka and Molotov Aguardiente. More than 30,000 bottles of alcohol suspected to be contaminated were confiscated by the government, according to CNN. According to the World Health Organization, trace amounts of methanol are common in fermented drinks — but higher concentrations, like when methanol is added deliberately, can be deadly. Adding methanol to distilled spir...
