Edwin Diaz hurts Mets in different ways

Edwin Diaz served up another home run — and another low-ball offer Brodie Van Wagenen’s way. Pitching for the first time since being struck in his left big toe by a Manny Machado line drive Thursday afternoon, Diaz extended his season-long struggles Sunday by surrendering a two-run homer and endangering a once seemingly insurmountable Mets lead, before recording two outs to collect his 23rd save in an 8-7 win over the Pirates at Citi Field. On Friday, Mickey Callaway opted to rest his closer, allowing Seth Lugo to pick up his first save of the season. On Saturday, Diaz warmed up in the bullpen, only to watch Steven Matz throw his first complete game. On Sunday, the trade candidate expected another day off. With the Mets leading 8-3 entering the ninth inning, Callaway called on Tyler Bashlor to end a game which had never been competitive. But a leadoff walk to Colin Moran, two-run homer by Brian Reynolds and single by Starling Marte brought Diaz through the right-center field gate,...

Brazilian police arrest suspect in $29M gold heist at airport

SAO PAULO — Brazilian police said on Sunday they arrested one person and are seeking an arrest warrant for another in connection with the theft of a gold shipment at São Paulo’s international airport on July 25. The authorities did not name any of the suspects in the theft, which involved 718.9 kilos of gold worth an estimated $29 million from the cargo terminal of Guarulhos international airport. Security firm Brink’s Co, which was responsible for delivering the gold to the airport, said in a statement last week that it had completed the delivery and the airlines had full custody of the shipment at the time of the robbery. Police originally believed the theft involved 750 kg of gold and other precious metals, worth $40 million. Andrew Golden killed in car crash 21 years after school shooting

A man who was 11 years old in 1998 when he and a pal shot and killed five people at an Arkansas middle school died in a car crash over the weekend, police said. Drew Grant, 33, who had legally changed his name from Andrew Golden, died Saturday night when his Honda CRV collided head-on with a Chevrolet Tahoe on Highway 167, about 100 miles north of Little Rock Ark., local TV-station KAIT reported. The driver of the second vehicle, 59-year-old Daniel Petty was also killed in the crash and three other people, including two adults and a child, were injured and taken to hospitals, State Police said. Cops didn’t say what vehicle they were in, how badly they were hurt or who was responsible for the crash. Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said law enforcement is working under the premise that Grant and Golden are “one in the same.” On March 24, 1998, Golden and his then-13-year-old friend Mitchell Johnson set off a fire alarm at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro Ark., and sho...

Kylie Cosmetics sales fall 14% as gloss dims

Kylie Jenner’s beauty empire might be in need of a makeover. Kylie Cosmetics, the three-year-old makeup company founded by the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, is seeing sales sag as a majority of customers who have tried it once in recent months have not returned, according to an explosive new report obtained by The Post. The privately held company, which is reportedly in discussions with Coty Inc. to acquire a majority stake for $600 million, has seen its sales decline 14 percent this year through May, according to Rakuten Intelligence. Revenues peaked in November 2016, one year after the first product was launched, but two years later, in November 2018, revenues were down by 62 percent, according to Rakuten, which tracks online purchases. The drop may be due to Kylie Cosmetics’ troubles getting customers to stay loyal, according to Rakuten, which relied on online receipts for 1.5 million customers. The company found that a majority of Kylie Cosmetics customers — ...

Man who went missing arrested 5 months later on rape charges

A British man who disappeared earlier this year when his son claimed he went missing in the Pacific Ocean has been arrested in Colorado on rape charges, cops said. Kim Vincent Avis, 55 — who is wanted on 24 rape charges in his home country of Scotland — was captured by police in Colorado Springs last week after allegedly disappearing off the coast of California, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office. The man’s 17-year-old son reported that his father went missing in the waters off Monterey on Feb. 25 after a night time swim at the spot dubbed “Mortuary Beach” — also known as the most dangerous beach in California. “Many resources were used, including a Coast Guard Helicopter, a Sheriff’s Office drone and our Dive Team to search for Avis with no success,” the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on Friday. After learning that Avis was out on bail for 24-felony sex abuse charges pending in Scotland, the authorities became suspicious of the drowning tale. ...

Trump to nominate Ratcliffe for DNI post as Coats steps down

President Trump announced Sunday that director of National Intelligence Dan Coats will step down next month, and will be replaced by a Texas congressman who has fiercely defended Trump in the Russia investigation. “I am pleased to announce that highly respected Congressman John Ratcliffe of Texas will be nominated by me to be the Director of National Intelligence. A former U.S. Attorney, John will lead and inspire greatness for the Country he loves,” the president tweeted, adding that Coats’ (inset) last day will be Aug. 15. Coats, a former senator from Indiana, has drawn Trump’s ire for not defending him publicly on matters of national security and his relationship with Russia. Coats also seemed critical of Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin during an onstage interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell last year at the Aspen Security Forum. “That’s going to be special,” Coats said when told of a tweet that Trump had sent inviting Putin to the White House. And th...

Yankees finally end their Red Sox nightmare

BOSTON — One win does not erase the weekend’s previous three putrid performances against the Red Sox. Nor can Domingo German’s strong outing remove the pungent stench that came off the Yankees’ starters in the previous eight games. Yet, what the 9-6 victory over the Red Sox in front of 37,429 Sunday night at Fenway Park did was release the pressure building in the Yankees’ universe, salvage the finale of a four-game series and allow the Yankees to enjoy Monday’s off day instead of hearing and reading about the pinstriped sky falling around them. It also slowed down the momentum of the third-place Red Sox, who dropped to nine games behind the AL East-leading Yankees. The second-place Rays are eight back. Battered by the Twins (eight runs and nine hits in 3 ²/₃ innings) in his previous start, German rebounded with 5 ¹/₃ innings Sunday in which he allowed three runs and four hits. He tied a season-high with nine strikeouts and improved to 13-2. In the previous eight games Yankee star...

Trump continues to call out Cummings on Twitter

President Trump targeted Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings on Twitter for a second day Sunday — as the tweets brought rebukes from Democrats and a defense from a top White House adviser who claimed the president was simply punching back. “Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore,” the president wrote, adding that the Democrats “always play the Race Card” and that Cummings “has failed badly.” The president resumed tweeting about Cummings, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, after a string of tweets on Saturday in which he described the congressman as a “brutal bully” and his Maryland district as “rat and rodent infested.” On Sunday, Trump referred to Cummings, who is African-American, as “racist” without any explanation — and suggested he “focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district and Baltimore itself.” Cummings didn’t respond to the new tweets on Sunday, but on Saturday he said, “I go home to m...

Canadian police may be closing in on alleged teen serial killers

Canadian cops may be closing in on the Adolf Hitler-obsessed teenagers wanted in the murders of a young tourist couple and the slaying of a man on a campground. Police said Sunday they were headed to York Landing in Manitoba after tipsters reported spotting accused serial killers Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, in the area. “Multiple RCMP resources are being sent to York Landing, MB, to investigate a tip that the two suspects are possibly in, or near, the community,” Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police tweeted . “A heavy police presence can be expected in the area. We will continue to update you as information becomes available.” The fugitives were seen by members of the Bear Clan Patrol, an Indigenous group based in Winnipeg who have been helping members near Gillam, where the manhunt has been focused, according to The Guardian. Crisis negotiators, tracker dogs and high-tech equipment including drones, were believed to be heading to York Landing Sunday evening. Pol...

Multiple victims in active shooter situation at California food fest: reports

Police are responding to reports of an active shooter — with multiple victims — at a food festival in California. “Holy sh*t I had just left the Gilroy Garlic Festival when some guy started shooting up the place,” wrote journalist and Bay Area resident Sarah Belle Lin on Twitter . “I’m so scared for all the families and people still there.” Ambulance crews were receiving reports of at least 11 victims at the Christmas Hill Park event — described online as “three full days of great garlicky food, live entertainment, and family fun.” “Who shoots up a garlic festival bruh?” asked one festivalgoer, who was captured on cellphone video. The footage shows countless people running in all different directions. “Random shooters started shooting everywhere,” tweeted Lizet Gonzalez. “We’re still waiting while they find them.” Credit: Source link The post Multiple victims in active shooter situation at California food fest: reports appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live ht...

Mets’ Marcus Stroman trade: Scouting Kay, Woods Richardson

The last time the Mets traded two of their top prospects, it didn’t end so well. Here goes Round 2. On Sunday night, the Mets sent pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson to the Blue Jays for righty hurler Marcus Stroman, the teams announced. The deal came as somewhat of a surprise given the Mets’ scant playoff hopes, and many signs had pointed to the pitching-hungry Yankees making a move for the Long Island native. The Mets’ similarly pulled a fast one when they traded top prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn as part of a package for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz last winter. The 24-year-old Kay, who joined Kelenic and Dunn at the MLB Futures Game this month, is the Mets’ No. 4 prospect in a middle-of-the-pack farm system. The 2016 first-round pick appeared to be on the fast track to join the majors this season before tailing off at Triple-A Syracuse, where he has a 1-3 record and 6.61 ERA in seven appearances. Kay went 7-3 with a 1.49 ERA in Double-A Bingha...

Deadly mosquito-borne virus that causes brain swelling found in Florida

A mosquito-borne virus — which causes brain swelling and can lead to death — has been detected in Florida, according to officials. The state’s Health Department issued a warning last week about the discovery of the virus, known as Eastern equine encephalitis, after it was found in “several sentinel chickens in the same flock.” “There has been an increase in mosquito-borne disease activity in areas of Orange County,” said DOH officials. “The risk of transmission to humans has increased.” While there’s only been an average of seven cases of the EEE virus reported in US residents each year, the disease is known to be fatal about 30 percent of the the time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Persons over age 50 and under age 15 seem to be at greatest risk for developing severe disease when infected with EEEV,” the agency says on its website. “EEEV infection can result in one of two types of illness, systemic or encephalitic (involving swelling of the brain, ...

Mets’ Noah Syndergaard is confused

Noah Syndergaard went from sad to confused about the Mets trade-deadline moves and the rumors surrounding him. After the Mets finished a three-game sweep the Pirates on Sunday, the righty posted a dejected photo of himself in the dugout on Instagram with the caption, “When you’re on the trading block for the 2nd time in 6 months.” He was also the subject of trade talks this winter. About three hours later, with the Mets having acquired pitcher Marcus Stroman from the Blue Jays, Syndergaard took to Twitter. This time he posted a GIF of Thor — the Marvel character who also serves as Syndergaard’s nickname — with a confused emoji and the caption, “I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT’S GOING ON” on the GIF. Syndergaard, who was traded in 2012 to the Mets from the Blue Jays in the R.A. Dickey deal, is not out of the woods yet with plenty of time left until Wednesday’s deadline (4 p.m.) The Mets adding Stroman doesn’t keep them from trading Syndergaard, reports The Post’s Joel Sherman. At least we kno...

Julian Castro’s twin brother grew a beard to avoid mix-ups

Presidential candidate Julian Castro is often mistaken for his identical twin brother, Joaquin, but now there’s a whisker of a difference between the two. The 44-year-old siblings travel together on the campaign trail, where Julian, a former federal housing secretary mayor of San Antonio, Texas, is running for the Democratic nomination with the help of top adviser Joaquin, a US representative. Reporters were thrown off by the pair at last month’s Democratic presidential debate in Miami, when the brothers entered the media room afterward in similar suits. And at a candidates’ forum in April, organizers mistakenly used a photo of Joaquin. Julian took it in stride, saying it was OK because his brother is “better-looking.” But Joaquin has come up with a solution to the hairy situation: He’s growing a beard. “I hadn’t shaved in, like, five days, and I thought I’ll just go ahead and grow it, you know?” Joaquin, who reps the San Antonio area, told The Post. Anthony Kay has some fun as his Mets trade breaks

Social media was in a frenzy Sunday night trying to piece together the Mets-Blue Jays trade. Initially it was only known that Marcus Stroman was being dealt. Amid the madness emerged a seemingly amused Anthony Kay. “What’s up Twitter??” the now-former highly touted Mets pitching prospect tweeted . “What’s going on is something happening?” At this point, it had yet to be revealed that Kay, along with fellow up-and-coming pitcher Simeon Woods-Richardson, would be heading to Toronto as part of the deal for Stroman., which is pending a phycial. But it’s likely the 24-year-old Kay already knew his fate by then. If not, he certainly does now.
