Baton Rouge African American museum vandalized a month after founder’s death

Baton Rouge’s African American history museum was found vandalized on Monday — exactly one month after it’s 75-year-old founder, Sadie Roberts-Joseph, was murdered. Police were investigating the damage, including shattered windows and benches that were flipped over at the Louisiana institution, The Advocate reported. Images posted on Facebook also show a wrecked outdoor garden and chairs and other furniture pushed over or broken. It’s unclear when exactly the Odell S. Williams African-American Museum, which is closed on Mondays, was trashed. The institution’s founder was also a community activist who reamed up with local cops in anti-violence initiatives. She was found suffocated in the trunk of her car last month. One of her tenants, 38-year-old sex offender Ronn Jermaine Bell, who owed Roberts-Joseph about $1,200 in unpaid rent, was arrested for her murder. Video shows Chris Cuomo fly into rage after man calls him ‘Fredo’

If he calls Chris Cuomo that again, he could be sleeping with the fishes. The CNN anchor was caught on video flying into an abject rage at a man for calling him “Fredo” — an apparent insult referencing Fredo Corleone, the weak, dopey brother in “The Godfather.” “Punk ass bitches from the right call me ‘Fredo.’ My name is Chris Cuomo, I’m an anchor on CNN,” the TV journalist says in the video , which was shared on Twitter Monday evening. “Fredo is from the ‘Godfather,’ he was a weak brother and the use of it to an Italian is disparaging,” he continues. The 49-year-old anchor tells the man that the name “Fredo” is as offensive to Italian Americans as the n-word is to African Americans. “Don’t f–ing insult me like that,” the Queens native fumes. “You call me ‘Fredo’ it’s like I call you punk b–ch, you like that?” The man in the video insists that he believed the anchor’s real name was Fredo. But Cuomo, a dad of three, doesn’t buy it. “You did not think that… stand up like a man,”...

The risk/rewards of sophomore QBs

Everybody likes going back for seconds. Well, except those who suffer a sophomore jinx. But recently, there seems to be a trend in second-year quarterbacks rising to fantasy prominence, as opposed to the other way around. Jared Goff, Mitchell Trubisky, even Patrick Mahomes. These QBs took big leaps in fantasy production from Year 1 to Year 2 — though in Mahomes’ case it was due to a lack of playing time, but Year 1 is what Year 1 is. One is an anomaly, two is a coincidence, three is a trend. So the Fantasy Madman will devote due attention to second-year QBs. And we’ll start with Josh Allen. The Bills youngster is not a prototypical pocket passer — lacking accuracy and with questionable reads. But he makes up for it with his legs. Having added speedster John Brown and slot man Cole Beasley is significant, even if they aren’t marquee names. Both are improvements over what the Bills had last season. And with the hope Zay Jones can finally reach his potential, there is reason for optim...

Gio Urshela’s Yankees run puts him in elite company

Gio Urshela says he didn’t know the extent of his ability in the batter’s box prior to Monday against the Orioles. But after he smashed a 461-foot home run in the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 8-5 victory over the Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader in The Bronx, the third baseman guessed he can consider himself a power hitter going forward. “He hits one up on the restaurant the other day in Toronto. Again, from the start of spring training, he caught my eye, his ability in batting practice,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said following the first game, after an initial disbelief at the range of Urshela’s homer. “… No, I’m not that surprised [at his power], he’s really come into his own as a hitter.” Urshela led the Yankees in Game 1, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, along with the solo homer. He was a triple short of the cycle. In the doubleheader finale, Urshela batted third as the designated hitter, stringing together a 3-for-5 performance with another two runs sco...

Hong Kong protests play into China fears, upend stock markets

Wall Street’s summertime slump continued as dramatic protests in Hong Kong dimmed hopes that the US will come to a trading truce with China. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 391.00 points — or 1.5 percent — Monday, with losses accelerating late in the session, to close at 25,896.44. Monday’s Dow dip followed news that Hong Kong’s airport was shut down after pro-democracy protesters flooded the main terminal. Adding to investors’ jitters, mainland China officials likened the protests to “terrorism,” and riot police fired tear gas into a subway station in a violent crackdown. “Putting the hammer down on Hong Kong would belie the image Beijing is portraying in the trade talks,” explained Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Capital Management. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were both off 1.2 percent. Further dashing hopes that a trade deal will be reached anytime soon, Goldman Sachs analysts predicted that a deal “will not be reached” before the presidential election nex...

Caesars executive fired after ex-worker suit: sources

Casino chain Caesars has fired a top executive who was accused of terminating an underling who complained about his “making out” with another underling. Caesars terminated Regional President Kevin Ortzman after the lawsuit, filed by Jocelyn Agnellini Allison, triggered an internal investigation, two sources said. Ortzman, who oversaw the company’s Bally’s, Caesars and Harrah’s Resort properties in Atlantic City, was let go on Aug. 9 after meeting with Caesars CEO Tony Rodio, the sources added. It’s unclear if Ortzman was fired as a result of the investigation, but Agnellini Allison “feels vindicated” by the termination, said a person with knowledge of her thinking. As The Post reported in June, Agnellini Allison claimed that her 21-year career at Caesars started to suffer after she complained in May 2017 that Ortzman had been “making out” with a subordinate after a work function in a way that “made employees uncomfortable.” Instead of taking action, Caesars top brass looked the o...

Hedgie Leon Cooperman waffling on New Media-Gannett: sources

Hedge fund activist Leon Cooperman is wavering in his earlier support for the nation’s biggest newspaper merger as falling stock prices put the deal in jeopardy, The Post has learned. Cooperman, whose Omega Advisors owns a 9.9 percent stake in New Media Investment Group, is telling people he will vote down New Media’s planned merger with USA Today owner Gannett Co. unless the stock reverses its recent slide, sources said. New Media, whose Gatehouse Media owns 152 regional newspapers across the country, announced on Aug. 5 that it would buy Gannett in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $1.4 billion. The deal’s value has plummeted to $1.2 billion, however, as investors flee New Media, which will be used to buy Gannett. Cooperman, who began buying New Media stock in February when it was trading at more than $13 a share, thinks the deal will only work if New Media’s shares rise above $8 a share, sources said. The stock, which has dropped 25 percent since the deal was unveiled last week,...

Freed inmate Cyntoia Brown marries Christian rapper J. Long

Freed inmate Cyntoia Brown — who spent 15 years in prison for killing a John when she was a teenage sex trafficking victim — has married Christian rapper J. Long, her rep confirmed on Monday. A series of photos posted on the musician’s Instagram show the newlyweds canoodling, with Brown, 31, wearing a white dress and a big rock on her perfectly-manicured hand and Long rocking a powder-blue suit. The pair also have on matching silver cross necklaces, in the images posted Saturday during Brown’s first weekend of freedom. Texas-native Long was a member of the 1990s hip hop group Pretty Ricky before breaking out on his own. He’s the grandson of guitarist Curtis Long, who played for B.B. King and others, according to The Tennessean. It’s unclear how the couple met or when exactly they were married. Brown’s publicist Wes Yoder would only say “they will tell the rest of their story later this fall.” Brown’s memoir, “Free Cyntoia” is scheduled to be released Oct. 15 through Atria Boo...

My Master’s got me zilch, so choose wisely

I have a Master’s degree in American history from New York University. It has been almost worthless and hasn’t done a thing for my career. I started my Master’s degree with Georgetown’s graduate program. Had I finished there I suspect that degree would also have been worthless. Not worthless was the Bachelor’s degree I got from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Journalism. The fact that I’m writing this column — and have been a journalist steadily for over 45 years – I guess proves that. But even that degree probably only helped me get my first job. I’m bringing up my personal stuff for a reason: A new study by TD Ameritrade shows that young millennials — described as people 22 to 28 years old — have mixed feelings about their college education. “Our research found that for those young millennials who went to college, just 5 percent regret doing so,” says Dara Luber, senior retirement manager for TD Ameritrade. “However, when considering the value their degree had on getti...

Biden camp says verbal stumbles are just ‘Joe being Joe’

“Joe’s always been gaffe-prone — it’s just a piece of who he is.” That’s the excuse coming from the Joe Biden camp as to why the former vice president and 2020 Democratic front-runner keeps having to put his foot in his mouth while on the campaign trail, with multiple verbal stumbles coming in recent days. “Joe Biden has spoken his mind his entire life, which voters know and love about him,” said Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s communications director and deputy campaign manager, in an interview with the New York Times. “He’s a real person, he’s authentic and that will never change,” she told the paper. Campaign advisers and allies insist that despite what some people say, it is not Biden’s age that’s causing him to slip up — it’s just in his nature. “Joe’s always been gaffe-prone,” said Rev. Joseph Darby, a longtime supporter from South Carolina. “It’s just a piece of who he is,” Darby told the Times. “He made a bunch of them last week but I don’t think it affects his capacity to gov...

Joe Namath adds dose of Jets reality to Darnold expectations

Jets great Joe Namath saw the 2019 version of the team up close on Monday, watching practice and spending some time in the quarterbacks room with Sam Darnold. Namath said his expectations for Darnold are high, but the quarterback can’t win by himself. “Win a championship,” Namath said of those expectations. “Now expectations and hopes are two different things. I hope we can win a championship, but I don’t know that kind of talent is here right now. It remains to be seen.” The Jets are not quite ready to contend for a title yet, but Namath believes in the second-year quarterback. Darnold is the latest quarterback to try to fill the Hall of Famer’s giant shoes. “I like his demeanor,” Namath said. “We didn’t go out to dinner or anything, but the few times that I’ve been in his presence and talked with him he gives you a good vibe, a good feeling. He’s respectfully humble. Physically, he can play as well as anybody. He just needs to keep polishing himself and the team needs to polish ...

Youngest victim of garlic festival mass shooting laid to rest

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The youngest victim of a mass shooting at a California food festival who loved comic books and listening to romantic ballads by his favorite artist was laid to rest Monday. About 300 friends and family of 6-year-old Stephen Romero remembered the boy as a happy and outgoing kid who loved to dress up as Batman and listen to The Weeknd. A small, open white casket was placed at the front of a San Jose auditorium and flanked by enlarged photos of the boy with a quick smile and wreaths of flowers, including one with a Batman logo. It was the last memorial service for the three people killed July 28 when a gunman opened fire at the popular Gilroy Garlic Festival. He also killed 13-year-old Keyla Salazar of San Jose and Trevor Irby, 25, of Romulus, New York. More than a dozen people were injured. Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo, who attended the funeral service, said the boy was later buried at a San Jose cemetery. “Having attended Keyla’s funeral and a now a lit...

Mets’ path to playoffs isn’t in their favor

The chatter around the Mets has been their schedule: From the release of next year’s slate to how soft their recent run has been. Now it’s going to be how tough their stretch run is, starting Tuesday with a three-game road set at National League East-leading Atlanta. “Yeah, for sure. I’ve already been thinking about it,” said Zack Wheeler, who’ll get the ball at 7:20 p.m. against Max Fried. “You lose [Sunday], we need to pick the momentum right back up and get that first win in Atlanta and get right back after it, set the tone. Set the tone with them.” The Mets had been a white-hot 13-1 coming into this past weekend’s series against Washington, but their streak had been downplayed in some quarters because it came against soft competition. But the Mets are pointing to their series win over the Nationals as proof they can beat good teams. They’ll get an even better one in Atlanta. “It was big, because we were running off all these games and winning them and everybody was kind of say...

Jets are playing dangerous Le’Veon Bell game

It was a violent play that took place about midway through practice Monday and, for a moment, you didn’t really know what to think of it. Le’Veon Bell, the Jets prized offseason acquisition and quite possibly the linchpin to their offensive success, was running the ball up the middle in a team drill and was met by a ferocious hit from linebacker Brandon Copeland that was so impactful it sent Bell airborne and onto his back. It was a hold-your-breath moment. Good defensive play by Copeland? Or an overzealous hit by a defender on one of the team’s indispensable offensive stars during a training camp practice? This, remember, is a running back who hasn’t played in a game since the 2017 season and whom the Jets are paying $14 million per year. Bell bounced right up to his feet and went on to the next play without so much as jawing at Copeland. About an hour later, Bell told reporters exactly what he thought about that hit. “I loved it,’’ he said. “A nice pop. I haven’t really felt i...

Field of Dreams, Red Sox

It’ll be an early start for the Yankees. As part of Monday’s MLB schedule release, the Yankees’ 2020 season will begin on March 26th in Baltimore, the franchise’s earliest Opening Day ever. Possibly the most anticipated part of the schedule will come in mid-August, when they take a trip to Iowa for the previously announced “Field of Dreams” game against the Chicago White Sox. July will see the Yankees match up with the cross-town Mets for a pair of Subway Series meetings. As usual, the Bombers will get a heavy does of the rival Red Sox, playing host in The Bronx from May 8-10, July 24-26; and Sept. 8-10. They’ve visit Fenway Park three times as well, June 12-14, July 30-Aug. 1 and Aug. 31-Sept. 2. The Yankees will also see the NL Central for interleague play, matching up throughout the season against the Cardinals, Brewers, Pirates, Cubs and Reds. Things wrap up against the Rays on the final game of the regular season on Sept. 27 at Yankee Stadium. Full Yankees 2019-20 schedul...

Mia Khalifa claims to have only made $12K doing porn, Twitter freaks out

Ex-porn star Mia Khalifa got the Twitterverse talking on Monday night after she claimed in a tweet that she only made “a TOTAL of around $12,000” in the adult entertainment industry. “People think I’m racking in millions from porn,” tweeted the 26-year-old . “I made a TOTAL of around $12,000 in the industry and never saw a penny again after that. Difficulty finding a normal job after quitting porn was… scary.” Khalifa, a Lebanon native, only worked in the adult film business for three months, but was — and still is — one of its biggest names. Years after quitting, she was still ranked No. 2 on Pornhub for most searched stars in 2018, according to VICE. “To clarify, I was never promised ‘millions’, nor do I expect it,” Khalifa said. “I’m just clarifying common misconceptions about me, and in turn, about the industry.” Khalifa added, “I was involved in porn so briefly, but my actions spread like wildfire, and I continue to be ranked (truly baffles me) 5 years after leaving the indu...

Highlights include Puerto Rico, Subway series

The Mets can already have an eye toward next year with the schedule release on Monday. The Amazin’s open the season March 26 at the Nationals, and get their home opener at Citi Field on March 30 versus the Phillies. The Subway Series starts in The Bronx when the Mets play at the Yankees on July 7-8. They come back to Flushing for a pair of games on July 28-29 to finish the regular-season set. The Dodgers come to Citi Field at the end of May, but one of the highlights is a trip to Puerto Rico a month earlier. The Mets are heading back to San Juan for a three-game series against the Marlins. They’ll play April 28-30 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. “Puerto Rico has a rich baseball history and passionate baseball fans,” Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said in a statement. “We are honored to represent the Mets, and Major League Baseball, and are looking forward to returning to Puerto Rico to play the Marlins in 2020.” The Mets had faced the Marlins in Puerto Rico in 2010. House Judiciary wants answers on Epstein’s apparent suicide

The House Judiciary Committee on Monday sent a letter to the federal Bureau of Prisons with a bipartisan demand for answers on the shocking behind-bars death of convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. “The apparent suicide of this high-profile and — if allegations are proven to be accurate — particularly reprehensible individual while in the federal government’s custody demonstrates severe miscarriages of or deficiencies in inmate protocol and has allowed the deceased to ultimately evade facing justice,” reads the letter, which puts 23 pressing questions to Acting BOP Director Hugh Hurwitz. The majority of the inquiries pertain to Lower Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center’s handling of inmates who have demonstrated themselves to be dangers to themselves. “Was the termination of Mr. Epstein’s suicide watch by the official who made such determination discussed with or directed by any supervisory personnel or leadership of BOP or any DOJ [Department of Justice] personnel or exec...

Is NBA hinting Kevin Durant’s return?

The Nets will have more national television games this season than they had in the last five years combined. And they’ll come with more subplots and melodrama than a telenovela. 1. Can’t-miss Nets Arguably the biggest takeaway may just be that the Nets have climbed up the NBA food chain from invisible to must-see. They’ll be on national TV 20 times: Six on ESPN, six more on TNT and eight on NBA TV. They had just one national game last year — on NBA TV — after being shut out altogether the previous three seasons. 2. The Salt Bowl is on Nov. 27 Kyrie Irving — whose stay with the Celtics was highly scrutinized, and departure was highly criticized — returns to Boston the night before Thanksgiving. Celtics GM Danny Ainge has gone out of his way to frame the All-Star point guard as the villain in this story, and the Nov. 27 tilt will be the latest juicy chapter. Expect plenty of boos. 3. What does the NBA know about KD? Both of Brooklyn’s games against Golden State are fairly late in ...
