Canadian murder suspects were let go after stop at checkpoint

The accused killers at center of a massive manhunt by Canadian authorities were stopped by safety officers when they blew through a checkpoint in Manitoba last week — but were let go. Teenagers Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky — who are accused of killing Australian tourist Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese along with Canadian botanist Leonard Dyck — were stopped after blowing through an alcohol checkpoint, according to Canada CTV News. “These two individuals kind of drove through the check stop where we had the two constables follow them into the community and stop them,” Nathan Neckoway, the band councillor of the Tataskweyak Cree Nation, said on Tuesday. The Tataskweyak Cree Nation does not allow alcohol in the area and it is located near Split Lake, the last place that the two have been confirmed sighting. “We weren’t aware of their status, of them being wanted,” Neckoway said. “Apparently after they came to our community, that’s when they sent out that wan...

Reds land Trevor Bauer in stunner

If the Yankees were hoping to land Trevor Bauer, they lost their chance. The controversial Cleveland Indians right-hander was traded to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night, part of a three-team deal with the San Diego Padres, according to ESPN.com. Yasiel Puig is headed to Cleveland as part of the deal for Bauer, according to the report. Bauer was fined by Major League Baseball earlier in the day for heaving a ball from the pitcher’s mound over the center-field wall at Kansas City last weekend. Garlic festival gunman Santino William Legan likely acted alone: cops

Police on Tuesday said they believe it’s likely that Santino William Legan acted alone when he opened fire at the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, killing three people and wounding a dozen more. Investigators are still following up on leads from witnesses who said they spotted a second suspect at the gathering in southern California Sunday — but the probe so far has led them to believe there wasn’t another person involved, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said in an afternoon press conference. Smithee said investigators tracked the 19-year-old gunman’s movements around town and that surveillance video shows him visiting various stores alone, “supporting the thought that he acted on his own.” Investigators found a shotgun in Legan’s car, which was parked northeast of the Christmas Hill Park festival grounds, Smithee said. They also dug up a bag full of ammunition in a creek near the garlic celebration. Police say Legan got into the festival via the creek, by cutting a whole in a fen...

Giants’ new receiver fill-ins showing some promise

Our daily practice report from Giants training camp: Good Recent wide-receiver additions T.J. Jones and Amba Etta-Tawo look to be integrating into the team nicely. Etta-Tawo was catching low passes from Kyle Lauletta and flashing signs of good hands. Jones showed dominant capabilities down the sidelines on several big plays. Bad Offensive tackle Chad Wheeler is a 6-foot-7, 300-pound bulk of physicality. He’s aggressive and uses his strength to his ability, but almost too much. On several plays, Wheeler resorted to illegal-hand placement and excessive force that would without a doubt draw a flag in a game. Caught my eye Evan Engram was a quarterback’s dream Tuesday. It didn’t matter if he was receiving passes from Daniel Jones or Eli Manning, he got wide open on several plays. Keeping up with Jones As hard as it is not to put emphasis on the quarterback, a lot of the uglier plays for Jones weren’t entirely his fault. Corey Ballentine’s interception was a tremendous pick in the ...

Warren tells chuckling audience that ALS story ‘isn’t funny’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren gave a schoolteacher shush to Tuesday night’s Democratic debate audience as she delivered an anecdote about the under-insured. “This isn’t funny,” said Warren, directing her comments to a noisy Detroit crowd reacting with chuckles to her pivot back to the plight of Ady Barkan, who was diagnosed with ALS. “This is somebody who has health insurance and is dying and every month has about $9,000 in medical bills his insurance company won’t cover,” Warren said. “His wife Rachael is on the phone for hours and hours and hours begging the insurance company please cover what the doctors say he needs,” the Massachusetts Democrat continued. “He talks about what it likes to go alone with thousands of other people to beg friends, family and strangers for money so he can cover his medical expenses.” Warren went on to rail against the “basic profit model” of health insurance companies, where they take as much money as they can in premiums, but pay out as little as possible...

Giants Eli Manning reinventing game with help from Al Leiter

Al Leiter made the pitch. And now Eli Manning is throwing fastballs. It was Leiter who directed Manning to trainer Mickey Brueckner, who has gotten positive results for Red Sox pitcher and former Seton Hall Prep star Rick Porcello and for Leiter’s 97 mph-throwing son Jack, who will be a freshman at Vanderbilt this fall. “I feel better, I feel stronger,” Manning said. Leiter is not the least bit surprised. “What he did, and his commitment to it, will absolutely make him stronger and in better position for the throws that are necessary,” Leiter told The Post. “Bottom line, bottom line: You create the throwing pattern and the strength that goes with it to help maintain and sustain arm speed and strength. If you have the arm speed, I don’t care if you’re throwing a [5.6-ounce] baseball or whatever the hell a football weighs [14-15 ounces].” Leiter, an ex-Yankee and ex-Met, was once a fireballing left-hander who retired at age 40 with two World Series rings over a 19-year career. “I...

Nonshavers, rivals bleeding Gillette as P&G takes $8B writedown

Hey, Gillette — that’s one painful nick! The 118-year-old razor maker’s parent company, Procter & Gamble, on Tuesday revealed it will take an $8 billion writedown on the men’s grooming brand. One big problem, according to P&G: Millennial men aren’t shaving as often as their dads do. “Lower shaving-frequency has reduced the size of the developed blades and razors market,” P&G Chief Financial Officer Jon Moeller said Tuesday on a call with analysts, referring to markets in the US and Europe. In addition to beards and five-o’clock shadows, the strong dollar has slammed sales by sapping revenue from overseas markets. To make matters worse, analysts say Gillette has faced stiff competition from upstart brands such as Dollar Shave Club, now owned by rival Unilever, and Harry’s. Moeller said younger rivals had “much less of an impact” on its business than hirsute millennials. Nevertheless, “new competitors have entered at prices below the category average,” Moeller said. Trump has no regrets blasting Elijah Cummings

President Trump said he has no regrets in blasting Rep. Elijah Cummings and the congressman’s “corrupt” city of Baltimore because the criticism is effectively helping African-Americans who have to live in such conditions. “I’m the least racist person there is anywhere in the world,” the president said Tuesday at the White House before leaving for Jamestown, Va. Trump, who over the weekend called Cummings’ Maryland congressional district “rat- and rodent-infested,” alleged that billions of dollars have been “mishandled for many years” and that the Democratic congressman “has been there for a very long time” and has had “an iron hand on it.” “I’ve received more phone calls than I think on any subject from people of Baltimore and other cities corruptly run by Democrats thanking me for getting involved,” he said. “Those people are living in hell.” Credit: Source link The post Trump has no regrets blasting Elijah Cummings appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https:/...

‘I wrote the damn bill!’

Some of the presidential candidates at the Democratic primary debate Tuesday questioned “Medicare For All”  — but Sen. Bernie Sanders wasn’t having it, saying he knows it’ll benefit workers because, “I wrote the damn bill!” The Vermont lawmaker was asked if he can guarantee to union members that his health insurance plan would be better than their current healthcare, and responded that he could. “They will be better because ‘Medicare For All’ is comprehensive it covers all healthcare needs,” Sanders said. “For senior citizens, it will finally include dental care, hearing aids and eyeglasses.” But Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) challenged Sanders, chiming in with: “But you don’t know that, Bernie.” “I do know! I wrote the damn bill!” Sanders snapped. Former Maryland congressman John Delaney also disputed that the bill was a good idea, arguing it was political suicide. “You’re wrong,” Sanders said, to laughs. Delaney argued Democrats shouldn’t be telling Americans their private healthc...

Yankees’ CC Sabathia knows what hat he’d wear to Cooperstown

CC Sabathia won’t have to think too hard about which hat to wear if he gets a Hall of Fame call. He would go in as a Yankee. “Being here now for 11 years and winning the World Series, I think it’ll be a Yankee hat,” Sabathia said on NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers. The 39-year-old southpaw, who plans to retire after this season, has reached six All-Star games, won a World Series and a Cy Young award back in 2007. He spent the first eight years of his career with the Indians, part of one season with the Brewers and the rest in New York with the Yankees. This year, he went over the 3,000-strikeout plateau, just the 17th pitcher to join the exclusive club. Sabathia is 251-159 lifetime with a 3.73 ERA. De Blasio stands up congresswoman ahead of Democratic debate 2019

DETROIT, Mich. — Punctuality has never been one of Mayor de Blasio’s strong suits — and he proved it yet again here on Tuesday. Hizzoner had been scheduled to appear at a pre-debate event in Detroit with other 2020 Democratic hopefuls, which was hosted by Michigan Rep. Brenda Lawrence, but he didn’t show up. “[De Blasio] committed to me. He said he would be late. And now I just heard he wasn’t coming,” Lawrence told The Post. “It’s his loss,” she said. “He had a room full of young people to talk to. I wanted to hear his speech — I really did because I’m a former mayor. I tried. I invited. He accepted.” Lawrence had to announce de Blasio’s tardiness — and apparent flaking — to a packed ballroom full of young Democrats and Detroit area constituents who believed the mayor was coming. “The fact that he’s not here, yeah, we’re bummed out,” said West Bloomfield resident Shirya Beessabathuni. New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who was also scheduled to appear, didn’t show up either — bu...

Luke Voit exits Yankees game early

Luke Voit left Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks after the fourth inning. The Yankees first baseman was hit by a breaking ball in the first, but didn’t appear to have any issues. Some replays showed Voit perhaps wincing after a third-inning strikeout. He was replaced in the lineup by Tyler Wade, recently recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, who came in to play third base, while Gio Urshela moved to third. Prior to the game, DJ LeMahieu said his tight groin was fine and he could play, but Aaron Boone wanted to be cautious with the injury after LeMahieu sat Sunday’s game in Boston. Voit missed seven games while on the 10-day injured list with an abdomen strain suffered last month while the team was playing the Red Sox in London. The Yankees currently have 12 players on the IL and have had 23 players spend time there- with 26 stints in total. Grant Thompson of ‘King of Random’ fame dies while paragliding

Viral YouTuber Grant Thompson — creator of the popular series “King of Random” — died while paragliding in Utah on Monday night, TMZ reported. He was 38. Thompson’s brother told the outlet that Grant never returned from his trip near Sand Hollow State Park. The YouTube star’s body was recovered Tuesday, the report said. On Monday night an unknown caller notified authorities of Thompson’s disappearance, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. The caller used Thompson’s last known phone-tracked GPS coordinates to direct a search team to the online influencer’s body. Authorities also recovered Thompson’s paragliding equipment and a recording device, ...

Indians’ Trevor Bauer receives punishment for epic meltdown

CLEVELAND — Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer has been fined by Major League Baseball for heaving a ball from the pitcher’s mound over the center-field wall at Kansas City last weekend, a person familiar with the discipline told The Associated Press. The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the discipline was not announced. The players’ association declined comment on the decision. An All-Star last year, Bauer made the toss just after allowing a two-run single to Nicky Lopez that gave the Royals a 7-5 lead with one out in the fifth inning of Cleveland’s 9-6 loss Sunday. When manager Terry Francona emerged from the dugout to make a pitching change, Bauer turned, took a couple steps and threw the ball over the 410-foot mark. Francona pointed Bauer toward the dugout, and then followed closely behind him, and both disappeared into the tunnel. Bauer apologized to the organization and his teammates. Francona said Tuesday he plans to discuss the incident with president of...

America’s trust in technology companies is plummeting: study

America is unfriending Big Tech. Public trust in companies like Facebook and Google has nosedived over the past four years, with a third of all Americans saying big tech firms have a negative impact on the country, according to the Pew Research Center survey released Monday. In 2015, only 17% of Americans thought tech companies were bad, the research by the nonpartisan group found. But in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the Russian-led Facebook misinformation campaign during the 2016 presidential election, confidence in them has tumbled. Today, only 50% of people believe the big tech firms have a positive impact on the States — down from 71%. The analysis is based on telephone interviews with 1,500 adults conducted between July 10-15. According to the survey, opinions appear to run along political lines — with Democrat-leaning respondents more likely than Republicans to say these firms have a positive impact on the way things are going in the country. But since ...

Ohio parachuter dies in Portugal when wind blows him into cliff

A Ohio man died in a BASE jumping accident on a Portugal vacation when the wind blew him into a cliff, according to a report. Zeke Wilson, 35, of Rossville died Saturday in Porto da Cruz while BASE jumping, which refers to leaping from a building or antenna, among other fixed objects, news station WRCB and local media outlets reported. On his final jump, the wind reportedly blew Wilson and his parachute backward into the side of a cliff. He died from injuries he suffered in the crash, according to a GoFundMe page created to raise money to get his remains home. “It took rescuers several hours to recover his body,” the page said. “[His wife] was a witness to the entire event.” In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two young children, who are ages 3 and 7. “We are all just heartbroken right now,” his mother-in-law, Heather Kelly, told WRCB. Yankees finally flaunt their ‘Savages’ shirts

Move over, Pinstripes. The Yankees flaunted their much-anticipated “Savages” T-shirt ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Diamondbacks. Inspired by manager Aaron Boone’s epic rant after being ejected from a win earlier this month, the shirt appropriately features the word, “Savages,” in a box, referring to the Yankees’ aggressive mentality at the plate. “We’re gonna rock it for a while,” Luke Voit said a couple weeks ago. Omitted from the shirt, of course, are the expletives Boone yelled at the umpire. “You’re having a piece of s–t start to this game,” Boone said. “I feel bad for you, but f—ing get better. That guy [Rays starter Yonny Chirinos] is a good pitcher, but our guys are f—ing savages in that box. Our guys are savages in the f—ing box. Tighten it up right now, OK?” Other companies have taken a swing at apparel honoring the Yankees’ new moniker. Voit said Barstool Sports had sent him a design, but it’s unclear if that’s the one he and the Yankees settled on. Credi...

Arizona woman’s body sold to US Army for blast testing

The Arizona body donation center where FBI agents found “a bucket of heads” and body parts sewn together “like Frankenstein” also sold a woman’s corpse to the US Army — where it was used for “blast testing,” her son recalled in a new report. Jim Stauffer said he trusted Biological Resource Center to make sure his mother’s brain would be donated to neurologists studying Alzheimer’s disease, which she suffered from before her death more than five years ago at the age of 73. “I’m not a trusting person, but in this situation you have no idea this is going on — you trust,” Stauffer told local TV-station ABC15 in a report published Tuesday. “I think that trust is what they fed on.” “There was paperwork signed stating what was and what was not to happen with her body,” he added — including a box he says he checked prohibiting military and other non-medical experiments. Within days, Stauffer said he received a box with what he was told were the majority of his mother Doris Stauffer’s...
