Barry Manilow’s Broadway shows are struggling for sales

Barry Manilow may be getting old — but his fans are getting even older. That’s the whisper on Broadway this week, as the 76-year-old “Copacabana” crooner is set to face an ocean of empty seats at a 17-show stint that’s slated to open Friday, sources told The Post. The Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter — who, even during the 1970s, gained a reputation for attracting throngs of women a generation older than he was — has sold barely half the seats for the upcoming run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Opening night and Saturday’s show are nearly sold out, with so-called “Fanilows” lining up to hear a string of decades-old hits like “Could It Be Magic,” “Can’t Smile Without You” and “Looks Like We Made It.” Nevertheless, about half the seats for the next three weeks — priced in the $100 to $300 range — are still empty despite the fact that the Lunt-Fontanne only has a capacity of 1,500. That’s in stark contrast to the recent success of a few of his slightly younger peers. In December, 69-y...

Kamala Harris, Nadler propose sweeping marijuana bill

Democratic Senator Kamala Harris joined Rep. Jerrold Nadler to introduce a sweeping marijuana legalization bill on Monday that would decriminalize pot at the federal level and expunge previous weed convictions. The bill, dubbed the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, would also levy a 5 percent sales tax on marijuana to fund three grant programs that would assist “socially and economically disadvantaged individuals” in the marijuana industry and aid those impacted by the war on drugs. The legislation would also outlaw the deportation of undocumented immigrants for a minor marijuana conviction. Immigrants would also not be subject to citizenship denial because of a pot conviction if the bill is signed into law. “Times have changed — marijuana should not be a crime,” Harris, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president, said in a statement announcing the legislation. “We need to start regulating marijuana, and expunge marijuana convictions from the reco...

Mets’ Robinson Cano unexpectedly has 3 homers to beat Padres

Mickey Callaway reserved the cleanup spot for the owner of the lowest batting average and fewest home runs of any Mets position player in Tuesday’ starting lineup. Robinson Cano then reinforced the manager’s belief that the aging, eight-time All-Star still belongs in the heart of the order — and convinced countless more. After spending nine years building a Hall of Fame case — and winning a Home Run Derby —while wearing pinstripes in The Bronx, Robinson Cano ended up producing his first-ever three home run game in Queens, steering a season’s worth of animosity from Citi Field crowds into standing ovations, while driving in every run during the Mets’ 5-2 win over the Padres on Tuesday night. Cano, who went 4-for-4, tied a career-low by hitting four home runs prior to the All-Star break. Over the past nine games, the second baseman has hit five. The bullpen briefly derailed the energy of the night, with Justin Wilson walking the first two batters in the ninth, and Edwin Diaz allowin...

Private equity investments not enough to help F+W Media

Private equity backers spent close to $150 million to save struggling 106-year-old F+W Media — but as the company this week winds down its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the bigmoney players have also emerged as the biggest losers. In the latest fire sale emerging from the bankruptcy, Penguin Random House on Monday finalized a $5.6 million deal for F+W’s 2,000-title US books division, which boasts titles “The Crystal Bible” by Judy Hall and the freelancers’ bible, “Writer’s Market.” That brings the total amount F+W has raised in its going-out-of-business sale to only $13.35 million. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March, listing debts of over $105.2 million. Among the private equity players, Fortress Capital lost an estimated $50 million, Tinicum Capital, lost about $45 million, while Arbor Lane and Apollo Global Management invested and lost about $20 million each, according to a reliable source close to the company. The bankruptcy filed in March of this year wip...

Man dies from flesh-eating bacteria contracted on fishing boat

A 78-year-old man in Texas managed to contract a flesh-eating bacteria while he was out on a boat fishing — with no visible open wounds or compromised immune system — and was dead less than two weeks later, his daughter says. “I’m still a little shocked and in disbelief,” explained Kim Sebek, daughter of San Marcos resident Jerry Sebek, who died on June 25. “Dad was a wonderful family man who loved to hunt and fish and do things out in the water,” she told mySA.com. “We’ve been coming here (Turtle Bay) for years and this is just an unfortunate thing that happened.” According to Kim, Sebek never swam in the water and had not visible cuts on his body at the time. He was out on a boat fishing in Turtle Bay, near Palacios, when he somehow contracted the deadly Vibrio bacteria — which causes Vibriosis — on June 13. Sebek, who is described in his obituary as a longtime insurance salesman, had been vacationing with his family and they reportedly noticed he wasn’t feeling well after the...

Snap revenue boosted by gender-bending photo filter

Shares of Snapchat parent company Snap Inc. soared more than 10 percent in extended trading Tuesday — thanks in part to a viral face filter that can turn a woman into a man and vice versa. The Los Angeles-based Snap handily beat Wall Street’s expectations for the second quarter, including a revenue jump of 50 percent. Much of the growth, Snap said, could be attributed to the launch of new augmented reality photo lenses, as well as an improved Android version of its app. One popular lens, which went viral as soon as it was rolled out, allows users to reverse their gender in photos — giving women short hair and a five-o-clock shadow, while showing men what they would look like with shoulder-length hair and a face full of makeup. “The popularity of these lenses drew millions of people into our rebuilt Android application, where they experienced the new and improved Snapchat that led to increased engagement,” chief executive Evan Spiegel said in a conference call following the report....

Son who shot, killed drunk mom ‘acted bravely, legally’: lawyers

Lawyers for a 15-year-old Kansas boy accused of fatally shooting his drunk mother are trying to dismiss the case, saying he “acted bravely and legally” by defending himself and his younger brother. The teen, who wasn’t named because he’s a minor, was recently charged with voluntary manslaughter in the June 20, 2018 death of his mom, 41-year-old Lisa Trimmell at a mansion near Andover, The Wichita Eagle reported. The siblings, who were then 14 and 12,  were at the mansion that night spending court-ordered time with their mom, after their orthodontist dad, Dr. Justin Trimmell, had moved out and taken them with him. The parents were in the midst of a divorce. In their motion to dismiss, defense attorneys say Lisa Trimmell was wasted and physically attacked the 12-year-old boy. The older brother grabbed his mom’s gun and “fearing for the life of his younger brother, as well as his own,” shot her and then called 911, according to the court documents. A bullet hit Trimmell’s neck ...

Tim Tebow’s Mets pipe dream is on hold after injury

Tim Tebow’s dreadful season just got worse. The Heisman-winner-turned-minor-league-outfielder has been placed on the Triple-A Syracuse Mets’ injured list after suffering a cut on his left hand — which required eight stitches — while making a play in the field Sunday in Toledo. It is unclear how long Tebow will be out. Tebow, in the midst of his third professional baseball season, appeared in the Eastern League All-Star Game last year while playing for Double-A Binghamton, but the former quarterback’s hopes of reaching the majors were crushed when he broke a bone in his right hand. This season, Tebow has produced nothing but ticket sales, hitting .163 with four home runs and 98 strikeouts in 77 games. Mets’ Chick-fil-a ads run a-fowl of sight lines

The Mets’ new advertisements couldn’t have come at a worse time. With just three weeks until the Mets’ annual Pride Night, when a portion of ticket sales will be donated to LGBTQ causes, Chick-fil-A signs appeared on the Citi Field foul poles before Tuesday’s first game of the team’s series with the Padres. Chick-fil-A ownership’s anti-LGBTQ stance has made headlines and caused national boycotts of the franchise — but none big enough to prevent the Wilpon family from reaping the financial benefits that could come from the partnership. Citi Field personnel were expecting backlash from fans whose sight lines might have been obstructed by the orange and white vertical ads. But with the team struggling so many unused seats in the upper deck, fans were able to shift around to avoid any obstructed views. Cops ID one of the NYPD water throwers, say he’s a gang member

Cops have identified one of the punks who was caught on video dousing uniformed NYPD officers with buckets of water as they attempted to make arrests over the weekend, according to police sources. The “person of interest” — described as a gang member in his 20s — was allegedly involved in the Brooklyn incident, which saw cops being drenched near 1400 East New York Ave., just blocks away from the 73rd Precinct station house in Brownsville. Authorities were still looking for the suspect as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, sources said. The NYPD is looking to wrangle several more people in connection to the water dousing videos, which sparked outrage over the weekend. One of the clips was filmed in the 28th Precinct in Harlem, where uniformed officers got soaked on Sunday night while attempting to make an arrest. The Brownsville incident was said to have played out in similar fashion. “They were responding out there, dealing with an incident. As they’re walking away, someone thought it was al...

Pete Alonso, Padres pair get up-close in rookie race

This week’s three-game series with the Padres will feature the top candidates for NL rookie of the year honors, with Padres Fernando Tatis Jr. and Chris Paddack looking to contend with Mets’ Pete Alonso. But to Mickey Callaway, the only thing to consider is Alonso’s numbers. “He’s in first in everything. I think that’ll work [for his rookie of the year case], if he just sits right where he is,” Callaway said before Tuesday’s first game of the series at Citi Field. “I get to see Pete every day, it’s not just the numbers he’s putting up, it’s the intangibles that he brings to our team. It’s leadership at a very young age. He’s a young leader in our clubhouse.” Alonso has been part of the rookie of the year conversation for a majority of the season, putting on a consistent show for 98 games. To Mets pitcher Steven Matz, it’s even more impressive considering there was speculation in spring training whether he would even make the final roster. “He brings a great energy to the team, he’...

Congress to hold police hearings after Sharpton petition

The Rev. Al Sharpton successfully petitioned Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) on Tuesday to schedule congressional hearings on police misconduct and social justice in the wake of federal prosecutors’ decision not to bring charges in the death of Eric Garner. The announcement was made by a Sharpton spokeswoman following a day spent meeting with Capitol Hill lawmakers alongside Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr. “Rev. Sharpton is hopeful with Congressman Nadler’s agreement to convene a congressional hearing that a measure of justice will be achieved and that the country will be forced to put a real lens on the travesty of justice from the mishandling of this case and others,” said the spokeswoman, Rachel Noerdlinger. The office for Nadler, the head of the House Judiciary Committee, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Sharpton revealed in a tweet that the hearing will take place in the fall. Other Democratic movers and shakers with whom Sharpton and Carr met Tuesday include p...

Watch Dwight Gooden’s DUI arrest unfold on video

Troubled ex-Mets ace Dwight Gooden was captured on surveillance video slowly getting out of his car surrounded by authorities during a DUI bust on a Newark, NJ, street Monday night. The fallen former pitching great holds what looks like a water bottle and an extra t-shirt as he shuffles along to a waiting ambulance after being accused of driving the wrong way on a one-way street in the city’s Ironbound district. The 54-year-old Gooden, dressed in a dark shirt and tan shorts, enters the ambulance on his own before being taken to nearby University Hospital. He told The Post he was released from the hospital Tuesday morning, and said he feels “very shameful” and plans to immediately enter rehab. Gooden, known as Doc, was previously busted last month for alleged cocaine possession and DUI in Holmdel, NJ. Giants must move on, even if Odell Beckham can’t

I’m going to miss Odell Beckham Jr., but New York isn’t. If there were any lingering doubts the Giants should have traded their mercurial superstar in a blockbuster move last March, those apprehensions should be eased by what Beckham had to say in GQ this month under the headline: “Inside the mind of Odell Beckham Jr.” That was always an interesting place to be for a journalist. There was never a lack of material after a conversation with the ultra-talented wide receiver. He was the Giants’ first social media star — who courted the kind of controversy that didn’t always sit well with the Giants, but made for interesting headlines. I’m not sure what Beckham had to complain about during his time in New York. There’s perhaps no other team or city in the NFL where he could max out his marketability the way he did. His special blend of talent and charisma played well in the city and earned him a $95 million contract and plenty of endorsement opportunities. The baggage was getting heavy...

Iowa man arrested for anti-Semitic threats to NYC Jewish org

The feds have arrested an alleged neo-Nazi and have charged him with leaving anti-Semitic and threatening messages with a unnamed Jewish organization in Manhattan, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Tuesday. Authorities allege that Garrett Kelsey, 31, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, called a New York-based Jewish organization in May and left a threatening voicemail laced with anti-Semitic vitriol — then followed up with an email demanding that the organization take down a video it posted about Nordic neo-Nazi groups, court papers state. “My people have fucking slaughtered your fucking people before and we will do it again,” Garrett said in the voicemail, according to a criminal complaint filed against him in Manhattan federal court. “And right now, you are giving us incentive to do that . . . . Filthy fucking Jews.” A day after making the communiques, Kelsey took part in a voluntary interview with law enforcement in which he admitted to leaving the messages — and a week later he ...

Odell Beckham puts sudden end to Giants drama

Multiple blowups later, Odell Beckham Jr. is finally ready to move on from the Giants. “The only time I talk about it is when I get asked about it,” Beckham told reporters Tuesday at his youth football camp in Cleveland. “It’s like a double-edged sword. I don’t want to talk about it. But if I get asked about it, I feel like I have to answer the question.” The 26-year-old Browns receiver was asked plenty about the Giants, and the controversial March trade that brought him to Cleveland, in a GQ interview published Monday. Beckham told the magazine he felt disrespected by Big Blue, and said general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur couldn’t “get past my past” — likely referring to his snafus off the field, including him attending an infamous boat party with several teammates the week of a 2017 playoff game. But Beckham has also attacked the Giants outside of a media setting. In April, he went on a Twitter tirade in response to a report in which Gettleman hinted Beckham had...

Taylor Swift reveals new song ‘The Archer’ live on Instagram

Taylor Swift just dropped a new single from her upcoming album. Called “The Archer,” the dark, synth-pop ballad was released with a fuschia-colored lyrics video via Instagram Live and YouTube on Tuesday. Unlike the two previous singles from her album “Lover,” to be released Aug. 23, “The Archer” is more subtle and soft in tone. Swift released the first single from the album in April: a chipper song called “ME!” with Brandon Urie from Panic! At the Disco that came with a candy-colored music video. In June, she released the song and video for “You Need To Calm Down” an upbeat dance song about gay rights. The 29-year-old wrote the new hit “Archer” entirely on her own, making it more intimate than “ME” or “You Need To Calm Down.” It was produced by Jack Antonoff, who was also behind Lorde’s 2017 album “Melodrama.” “Archer” has a slightly similar feel to that moody record. In the song, Swift sings about being both the hunter and the prey in her love life. “The Archer” can also be in...

Jets’ training camp primer: What to watch for

With the Jets reporting to training camp Wednesday, here’s a look at their biggest issues: Biggest comeback The Jets need Marcus Maye to return to the form he showed as a rookie and show he can stay on the field. Last year, ankle, thumb and shoulder injuries limited him to six games. The Jets back end is not the same without Maye there alongside Jamal Adams. Maye was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list this week so his start to camp will be delayed. Still, the Jets are optimistic he can return soon and take his spot in the secondary. Biggest position battle The Jets really don’t have that many battles for starting spots entering camp. One spot that may be up for grabs is the second cornerback spot opposite Trumaine Johnson. Darryl Roberts is penciled in now, but the Jets likely will bring in several contenders to take Roberts’ spot. Some are already on the roster and others could arrive off the waiver wire or through trades. Keep an eye on the Eagles, where new ...
