Israel bombs Hezbollah base in Lebanon

Israeli drones bombed a Palestinian base in eastern Lebanon early Monday amid rising tensions between the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon and the Jewish state. The strike came a day after an alleged Israeli drone hit a stronghold of the militant group in southern Beirut while another crashed and exploded nearby. Lebanese President Michel Aoun told the UN’s special coordinator for the nation, Jan Kubis, that the attacks in the Dahyeh suburbs and in the Bekaa Valley violate a Security Council resolution that ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. “What happened is equal to a declaration of war and gives us the right to defend our sovereignty, independence and the safety of our land,” Aoun said. “We are people who seek peace and not war, and we don’t accept that anyone threatens us though any means.” On Sunday, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah issued the toughest threats to his enemy in years and said the drones had launched a “new phase.” With Post wires...

Stocks jump after Trump says he wants trade deal with China

Wall Street stepped back into stocks Monday after President Trump signaled — yet again — that he wants to work out a trade deal with China. Early Monday, President Trump told reporters that the two countries would be “getting back to the table” to try to hammer out a trade deal. It was enough for markets, which were walloped Friday on Trump’s tough talk on trade , to end Monday’s trading session in the green. Although traders have been watching trade tensions intensify and cool for a good 18 months, they want to believe that Trump is hesitant to let stocks drop too much on his watch, watchers said. “Friday’s downdraft could have gotten Trump’s attention,” Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Capital Management said. Adding to pressure for a trade truce were Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s comments Friday that the central banks lacks a “rulebook” for international trade, Ablin added. The Dow Jones industrial average popped 303.92 points moments after the open before settling u...

Wife of NASA’s Anne McClain speaks out about space crime allegation

Decorated NASA astronaut Anne McClain allegedly hacked into her wife’s bank account from space — over a nasty custody battle happening down on earth, her estranged spouse said in an interview published Monday. Summer Worden said she had initially wanted to keep the dispute out of the public eye, but was prompted to speak out when McClain was awarded rights to visit her six-year-old son Briggs two weeks ago. “I knew I had to come forward and tell my story because the momentum of the case was not going in the direction we were hoping it to go in accordance with the law and preserving my rights as a parent,” Worden told ABC News. Worden said she didn’t want it to seem like she was trying to retaliate against McClain or “ruin her career” by going public. The pair married in 2014 and have been locked in a bitter divorce feud since 2018. Their relationship began going downhill when the “controlling” ex-US Army Lieutenant started to put “strenuous demands” on the family, including that ...

Toy giant Hasbro might be getting into the music industry

Is Hasbro really getting into gangsta rap? That’s the question on Wall Street, as the toy giant that owns My Little Pony and Mr. Potato Head disclosed on Monday a surprise, incidental acquisition of Death Row Records. Death Row — which was founded in 1991 by Suge Knight, Dr. Dre and The D.O.C.— was one of hip-hop’s most influential labels, signing West Coast rappers like Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. The label, however, filed for bankruptcy in 2006 after a series of lawsuits and the imprisonment of Knight. It has since changed hands several times, landing at UK-based Entertainment One, which bought it in 2013 for about $280 million. Last week, Hasbro shelled out $4 billion for Entertainment One, looking to seize control of the UK-based media company’s Peppa Pig cartoon franchise. Reps for Hasbro, which appears to have acquired Death Row as an afterthought, didn’t return requests seeking comment on its plans. The label is now effectively an archive of hit rap albums that frequentl...

Trump can’t buy Greenland, so why not Italy or Vietnam?

Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland. When I heard that last week I chuckled and thought: “What the freak is that all about?” Only I didn’t use the word “freak.” I used the word that appears in newspapers as F, dot, dot, dot. Buy Greenland? That’s nuts! But while most people are tearing down the idea, I’ve decided to predict how it just might work. The first thing you need to know is that nobody ever accepts the first offer. Any company that ever got acquired said “no” the first time. It’s in the Mergers and Acquisition Handbook, Chapter One — “Say no to the first offer, appear annoyed and prepare to negotiate.” It shouldn’t be any different when you buy a country. So Trump shouldn’t be discouraged by the fact that Greenlanders — or whatever they call themselves — said “no thanks” in no uncertain terms to his bold proposal. And when Denmark, which lords over Greenland, had a similar response, Trump probably realized that negotiations were right around the corner. Trump did the ri...

Feds still struggling to target international scam callers

Authorities on Monday dealt a blow to the scam-phone-call industry by busting three alleged perpetrators in New York, but they’re facing an uphill battle against the billions of calls Americans receive each year from overseas. The feds in June announced a nationwide crackdown on telescammers when they took out 94 schemes originating from within the United States — wiping out an estimated 3 billion annoying calls, according to the Federal Trade Commission. But that was just a “drop in the bucket,” because so many of the calls originate from outside of the country, FTC Consumer Protection Bureau Director Andrew Smith said at the time. Scams from the Philippines, Mexico and India, outside US jurisdiction, are harder to thwart, he said. Phone scams are easy to operate and extremely lucrative — and also difficult to trace, Alex Quilici, CEO of robocall-blocking service YouMail, told the Miami Herald in June. “There are call centers all over the map — from Florida to Guatemala to Niger...

How to fix the College Football Playoff

It has been 150 years since college football was born at Rutgers. And, still, somehow — 116 years after the first World Series, 90 years since the first NCAA Tournament, 41 years since college football’s first Division I-AA playoff — the FBS remains embarrassingly incapable of crowning a champion in a just and appropriate manner. Significant strides have been made. The much-bemoaned BCS killed decades of illogical endings — championships being split, and/or being decided by writers and/or coaches — with the important first step of ensuring the top-two teams would play for the national title, however controversial the selection of the pair would be. The introduction of the four-team playoff was progress many never believed they’d live to see, but it remains plagued with problems. In five seasons, only 10 different teams have reached the playoff. The Big Ten and Pac-12 champions were left out each of the last two years. Central Florida, which had consecutive undefeated regular season...

Brandon Nimmo facing final hurdle to rejoin Mets this week

The Mets’ playoff push could include Brandon Nimmo by the end of this week. According to industry sources, the outfielder is close to rejoining the team after beginning a minor league rehab assignment in the past 1 ¹/₂ weeks. Nimmo has been on the injured list since May 21, dealing with a bulging disk in his neck. Nimmo was given the day off Monday, a night after he played nine innings in the outfield for Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets ideally want Nimmo to play consecutive full games in the outfield before activating him. That final test could occur Tuesday and Wednesday. Nimmo’s return would at the very least give manager Mickey Callaway an additional left-handed bat off the bench. Nimmo could share time with Juan Lagares in center field. Nimmo has a .200/.344/.323 slash line with three homers and 14 RBIs in 43 games for the Mets this season. And Nimmo’s return could also move Jeff McNeil to the infield on a full-time basis, perhaps shuffling between second base and third base. McN...

VMAs 2019 crowd was a ‘Sucker’ for the Jonas Brothers

The remote performances that have been done over the years at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards — this time held at Newark’s Prudential Center Monday night — have been a mixed bag. But having New Jersey sons the Jonas Brothers perform at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ, made total sense. Looking stylish and studly, the reunited trio started off by performing their big comeback hit “Sucker” at before going outside to greet squealing fans and do their new, reggae-fied single “Only Human.” The whole thing capped off with fireworks, but the JoBros had already supplied plenty of sparks of their own. ‘Love yourself in a world that doesn’t love you back’

Last year, the MTV Video Music Awards didn’t quite seem to capture the music that was really happening at the moment. But the 2019 VMAs — held for the first time in New Jersey, at Newark’s Prudential Center — rectified that early on with a performance by one of the It Girls of summer 2019: Lizzo. Serving big-girl realness, the breakout artist got everyone — including New Jersey native Queen Latifah — on their feet. She sang “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell,” spreading her empowering vibes while showcasing her soulful vocals — with afro’ed background dancers and in front of a giant blow-up butt. Taking a swig from a bedazzled bottle of Patron, the breakout star bellowed: “Love yourself in a world that doesn’t love you back. You deserve to feel good as hell.” By the end of it all, there was no doubt that she was “100 percent that bitch.” Credit: Source link The post ‘Love yourself in a world that doesn’t love you back’ appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https://...

Man dies trying to save girlfriend from capsized kayak

A couple’s kayaking trip on the Ohio River turned tragic over the weekend when the woman fell into the water — and her boyfriend drowned while trying to save her, authorities said. Travis Hughes, 28, was boating with his 31-year-old girlfriend Jamie Dunaway and his brother when a wave smashed into her kayak and capsized the craft around 9 p.m. Saturday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said. Hughes jumped in to rescue Dunaway, capsizing his own kayak in the process, and didn’t resurface, officials said in the statement released to the News and Tribune. Dunaway was able to swim to a nearly by island where Clarksville Fire Department officials found her soon after. Hughes’ 31-year-old brother, Mitchell Hughes, stayed in his kayak and scoured the water for his sibling until authorities arrived. At about 11:30 p.m., Travis Hughes was found floating in the water near a hydroelectric dam by the Georges Rogers Clark boat ramp in Clarksville, Indiana. None of the kayakers, w...

Florida now in the projected path of Tropical Storm Dorian

Florida is now within a 5-day forecast cone of Tropical Storm Dorian, which is expected to become a hurricane in the coming days. It’s still “too early to speculate” if Dorian will impact the Sunshine State, according to the National Weather Service, but forecasters are telling residents to be prepared just in case. “I’ve been doing this 21 years, and I can tell you this track will change many, many times,” said WOFL-TV meteorologist Jayme King.  “It’ll scare us, we’ll be relieved, then we’ll be scared again. It’s important just to be ready to go should this come a little bit closer to the region as proposed right now.” If the National Hurricane Center’s most recent prediction is correct, Dorian could become the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2019 season. The storm is expected to blow through the Caribbean late Monday night and Tuesday before eventually reaching Puerto Rico, the island of Hispaniola and then Dominican Republic — possibly at peak strength — by Wednesday or Thu...

Why we just fell in love with Taylor Swift again

Taylor Swift — who shared the lead with Ariana Grande for the most nominations (10) coming into the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards held at the Prudential Center on Monday night — opened the show with a two-song parade of her new album “Lover.” First was a colorful version of her single “You Need to Calm Down,” its LGBTQ-positive message emphasized with a rainbow flashing over the stage. There were even “Drag Race” stars portraying various pop icons. But the best part was when Swift picked up her acoustic guitar to perform “Lover,” the gorgeous title track of her new LP, to which the audience seemed to already know all the words. No bells or whistles needed, it brought the focus back to her music, where it belongs. Serena Williams rolls past Sharapova

The hype to the match lasted longer than the match itself. Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova, 6-1, 6-1, in their much-ballyhooed first-round matchup at the 2019 US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens. Williams, the No. 8 seed, avoided any controversy that ended her 2018 run in the tournament during her dispatch of Sharapova, which took just under an hour. With the victory, Williams earned a date with American Catherine McNally in the second round. Long Beach police dog ‘Ozzy’ dies after being left in a hot car

A drug-sniffing police dog named Ozzy from Southern California died this month after being left in a hot car, authorities said. The dog, who served in the Long Beach department, was found dead after being left in the department-owned car by his handler on Aug. 14, cops said. Both Ozzy and his handler were off duty at the time, Long Beach Police said in a Facebook post. His handler immediately reported his death, which is being investigated as an accident, authorities said. The death is believed to be heat related, police said. The car was equipped with a heat system controller that is supposed to trigger a warning if the dog is in trouble, but police believe the alarms were not working. Police in the department are now checking their controllers before every shift because of the death, authorities said. “Our department is mourning Ozzy’s loss as we would with any of our employees,” police said in the Facebook post. Patriots’ David Andrews hospitalized with major health scare

Patriots starting center David Andrews has reportedly been hospitalized with blood clots in his lungs, and is at risk of missing the entire season. It’s unclear when the 27-year-old was admitted into the hospital, though the The Athletic indicates Andrew won’t be ready to go once the Patriots open their season Sept. 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Andrews has started in front of Tom Brady over the past four seasons, and his absence would be a major blow to the defending Super Bowl champions’ offensive line. New England would likely lean on 2016 sixth-round draft pick Ted Karras without Andrews in the fold. Karras, 25, has started five games in three years with the Pats. Owners created bogus story about dog found with snout ‘taped shut’

The heartbreaking story of an Ohio pup found with her muzzle duct-taped shut and her throat slashed — was actually a hoax made up by her owner in an attempt to get free veterinary care, authorities said Monday. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones on Friday announced that someone had discovered the dog — dubbed Dani — on the side of a road, and that she was rushed to a vet clinic. “This is appalling, words cannot describe the disgust I’m feeling right now,” Jones said, vowing to bring the culprit to justice. Turns out the entire story was made up. It wasn’t a vicious animal-abuser who hurt the pup — her throat was cut accidentally on a barbed wire fence, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The person who reported finding her, was actually her heartless and conniving owner, who “concocted a story to get the canine help for free,” the statement said. Dani’s snout being duct-taped was also faked as part of the con, cops said. “The snout/mouth area that appeared to be injured ...

This may be last time Giants see Daniel Jones for a while

Soon, it will be Eli Manning’s time to turn back the clock. To try to make something out of what will likely be his last season in blue. To hold off the team’s future for as long as he can. But not yet. The summer isn’t over, and so it’s not time for Daniel Jones to fade into the background and cede the spotlight. That time is coming. But Jones — the sixth overall pick in April’s draft out of Duke, the story of this training camp and the future face of the franchise — has one more game left to continue to wow fans and impress teammates and coaches. For the first time in his brief career, Jones will get an NFL start, in the preseason finale at New England on Thursday night. Who said the last game before the real games begin doesn’t matter? “I think it’s important that he goes in and executes well. For the amount of time that he’s in there, it’ll be good to be on the road, like we were last week against the Bengals,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “There’s a lot to be learned going through ...

Aggressive flesh-eating disease devours 25% of man’s skin

A Florida man is fighting for his life after he contracted a flesh-eating virus that’s eaten more than 25% of his skin, according to his family and a report. David Ireland — a husband and father of two young girls from Orlando — recently contracted Necrotizing Fasciitis and has been placed in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, his brother wrote in a GoFundMe for his brother. “He has had 3 surgeries to remove over 25% of the skin on his body. His kidneys have failed,” David’s brother, Daniel Ireland, wrote. Daniel added that despite his brother’s situation, he’s shown some signs of improvement, such as acid number from his liver and his blood pressure stabilizing. The brother told The Miami Herald that he’s not sure how David contracted the disease. He said his brother swims in the pool at his condo building, but does not swim in lakes and natural bodies of water. Necrotizing Fasciitis is a fast-spreading and rare flesh-eating disease that can cause death if not treated...
