Russia releases Staten Island teen jailed for weed possession

The Staten Island teenager who was arrested for marijuana possession in Russia while on a vacation with her mother in July has been released from jail, authorities said this week. Audrey Lorber, 19, was sentenced to time served and fined 15,000 rubles — a little over $230 — after being found guilty of “attempting to import marijuana purchased in the US into Russia,” the Moscow District Court of St. Petersburg said Monday. “Given the length of the detention, Lorber was released from serving her sentence, as well as from custody,” the translated statement said. The Pace University film student was arrested at Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg when Russian agents found her with 19 grams of weed, which is worth about $375 in the US. She had a prescription for medical marijuana in the US and produced the court documents to prove it, but the script did not, “apply to the territory of the Russian Federation,” according to local authorities. Lorber and her mother, retired New York City s...

Ex-Overstock CEO planned crypto dividend to thwart short sellers

When Patrick Byrne vacated the helm of Overstock last month, he left a nasty surprise for short sellers. Brokers at JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley in recent days have been helping short sellers roll back a bizarre plan by Overstock’s controversial ex-CEO to pay shareholders their next dividend in the form of an obscure cryptocurrency, sources told The Post. The crypto-dividend plan was devised by Byrne — who resigned Aug. 22 after claiming he was romantically entangled with a Russian spy — to thwart Overstock’s short sellers, with whom he has been tangling for decades. The plan worked — for a time anyway — and sent Overstock shares surging 60 percent over the last two weeks, to a 52-week high of $29.75 in midday trading Friday. That’s because short sellers — who place complex trades that are effectively bets that a stock will drop — were concerned about getting stuck with the stock’s blockchain-based dividends, sources said. To protect themselves, they began to unwind their short posi...

Long Island cops fatally shoot samurai sword-wielding man

A man was shot and killed by cops in Nassau County Tuesday evening when he lunged at the officers with a samurai sword, reports said. Officers responded to a house on Columbus Avenue in Oceanside soon after 6 p.m., when they were confronted by the man who has a history of mental illness, Newsday reported. The man’s father had called police on him, the report said. As he lunged at the cops, they opened fire and downed him, according to the report. “The son had charged at the officers with multiple knives in his hand, one being a sword,” Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said near the scene Tuesday evening, according to Newsday. The man was not immediately identified. Four officers were injured during the confrontation, including one who was hurt in a car crash while responding to the scene, according to the report. Mike Yastrzemski homers in first game at Fenway Park

Another Yastrzemski has homered at Fenway Park. San Francisco’s Mike Yastrzemski, the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, belted a home run in the fourth inning of the Giants game against the Red Sox on Tuesday night. It the first game Mike has ever played at the legendary park. The solo shot was the 238th home run by a Yastrzemski at Fenway Park and the first since Carl Yastrzemski went deep against Moose Haas of the Milwaukee Brewers on July 31, 1983. Giants manager Bruce Bochy played the younger Yastrzemski in left field, the same position his grandfather played for 23 years. Yastrzemski, a 29-year-old rookie, knew the night would be special. His grandfather played left in the final game of his career — Oct. 2, 1983 — a position where he won seven Gold Gloves, playing in front of the fabled Green Monster. “For life,” he told reporters before the game, sitting in the dugout about 4½ hours before the game when asked when he thought about playing his first game in Fenway....

Luis Severino returns, helps Yankees close in on playoff spot

It’s too early to tell whether Luis Severino will be the ace the Yankees planned on him being before his season was turned upside down by rotator cuff inflammation and a severe lat strain that sidelined him nearly the entire season. But they’ll certainly take what they saw in his long-awaited season debut Tuesday night, when Severino blanked the Angels over four innings in an 8-0 win in The Bronx. The Yankees opened their final homestand of the season with a victory sparked by a three-run homer from Gleyber Torres in a six-run fourth. And they inched closer to securing a playoff berth. Aaron Boone and Severino had been encouraged by his velocity and arsenal in three minor league rehab starts. The biggest question was whether Severino would have his command — and have enough time to fine-tune his stuff in time for the playoffs. Early indications were good, as Severino routinely hit the mid-90s throughout the 67-pitch outing. He topped out at 98 and made some of his best pitches wh...

Man allegedly killed girlfriend days after she posted his bail

A Massachusetts man was charged in connection with the death of his girlfriend — whose beat-up body was found inside their home, just days after she’d bailed him out of jail. Eric Griffin, 40, was out on the $250 cash bail Jennifer Kalicki had posted to free him from prison Sept. 11, when he was arrested and charged Monday with assault and battery on a household or family member, public records and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said. The 39-year-old woman was found unresponsive in bed Sunday morning at the couple’s apartment in Tewksbury with bumps, cuts and bruises all over her face and body and her shirt ripped open at the chest, according to a police report obtained by The Lowell Sun. Just a day prior, Kalicki had sent alarming text messages to her boyfriend’s sister, begging for help and saying that Griffin was “losing it.” “He’s ripped the door open. Choked me, slammed me to the ground,” one message read, according to police. Griffin’s sister didn’t call 911, acc...

Man posed as Manhattan restaurateur to hit up hostess for sexual favors: suit

A serial “sexual predator” posed as a restaurant owner and called one of his underlings for sexual favors, a new lawsuit alleges. Steven F. Ferris allegedly phoned a hostess working at Soho greasy spoon Charlie Bird pretending to be her boss Robert Bohr and offered her $1,200 to meet Bohr’s “nerdy, older friend and client” and take off her clothes “while the ‘friend’ pleasured himself,” according to the new Manhattan Supreme Court Lawsuit. “As a result of her discussions with Ferris, the host believed that Bohr had solicited her to engage in sexual acts with one of Bohr’s friends,” the court documents say. The unidentified hostess “was so convinced of [Ferris’] lies that she hired a lawyer to explore bringing civil claims against Bohr” and the restaurant’s parent company, the suit says, adding the hostess was “traumatized” and Bohr was “humiliated” by the ordeal, the suit says. The restaurant was forced to pay $90,000 in lawyer and private investigator fees to make sure there was...

Hero dog dies in fire after alerting family to blaze

This good boy was gone too soon. A pet dog in Florida helped save his family from a fire tearing through their house — but tragically perished in the blaze. “He was from bed to bed, back and forth,” owner Leroy Butler told Fox13 about his hero Jack Russell terrier, Zippy. The grieving pet owner said a fire alarm sounded at about 2 a.m. on Tuesday but “only lasted a short ‘beep beep,’ ” before turning off. Soon, the furniture and ceiling inside their Bradenton, Florida, home were engulfed in flames. So Zippy began barking loudly, alerting Butler and his children about the fire. The family was able to rush out. But when Butler tried to go back in for his pup, the fire had grown too large. “The floor in the living room was all on fire so there was nowhere for him to run out. Even if the smoke was this high. He was a short little dog. There was nowhere for him to go,” said Butler. By the time firefighters found the dog it was too late, and he’d succumbed to the smoke. “He was a g...

Violence spikes at Rikers Island despite jail population decline

Violent attacks by inmates against each other and Dept. of Correction officers at Rikers Island spiked over the past year even as the jail population dropped, according to new city statistics. The overall “rate of violent incidents among individuals in custody rose by 24.5%, and the rate of serious injury to individuals in custody as a result of these incidents rose by nearly 24%,” according to the mayor’s annual Management Report released Tuesday. Slashing and stabbings jumped by 10.4%. Assaults against staff also rose 3.4% percent, leading to a staggering 37% increase in serious injuries to Dept. of Correction officers, the report found. “There’s really little to no consequence to the inmate for fighting or for bad behavior,” Joseph Russo, president of the Deputy Wardens Association, told The Post. “So the inmate is not concerned about that when he has a fight with another inmate or assaults staff,” Russo said. The report, authored by First Deputy Mayor  Dean Fuleihan ...

Yankees will get clarity on Giancarlo Stanton’s role soon

Of all the important Yankees on the verge of returning, perhaps there are more questions surrounding Giancarlo Stanton than any other. The team could finally begin getting some answers soon. Stanton, who has been limited to nine games, could be activated as soon as Wednesday after being sidelined since June 25, when he sprained his right knee on an awkward slide. He has also spent time on the IL with a torn biceps, a left shoulder injury and a strained left calf. Aaron Boone said Stanton believes his “knee is where it needs to be” and has been doing baserunning, agility and conditioning drills in Tampa without any issues. How that translates to The Bronx with just 10 games left before the postseason as of Tuesday, will likely help determine what role Stanton has in October. Boone said he may build Stanton up by playing him a few innings at a time in the outfield. The manager added he has been encouraged by how Stanton has bounced back during his rehab stint, which included games ...

11-year-old foils robbery attempt by throwing bread, squash at thief

An 11-year girl and her father scared away a would-be robber in England by pelting the suspect with bread and bottles of squash, according to a report. The embarrassing botched robbery happened about 10 p.m. Monday local time at a corner store in Worthing, Sussex, according to BBC News. Surveillance footage from inside Express Supermarket shows the knife-wielding suspect burst through the doors and head toward the counter. But the man just as quickly fled after the little girl and her dad chucked “squash and a loaf of bread” at him, police said. Police, who are still searching for the suspect, praised the youngster’s “bravery.” Credit: Source link The post 11-year-old foils robbery attempt by throwing bread, squash at thief appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https://ift.tt/2Nmb6Rb

Manhattan parents sue Juul for hooking their teen on nicotene

Two Manhattan parents filed a lawsuit on Tuesday claiming their teenage daughter was sickened by e-cigarette giant Juul because the company illegally marketed the product to child using “big tobacco’s youth marketing playbook.” Parents Kathryn Fay and Ian Fay brought the civil suit against Juul Inc., as well as stakeholder Altria, cigarette company Phillip Morris and a Manhattan smoke shop. In the suit, the Fays claim their daughter began using Juul when she was 12 years old after being attracted to the e-cigarette’s mango-flavored nicotine. They say their daughter has been injured by her vaping use, but do not specify her injuries in the lawsuit. Their lawyer, Jeffrey Haberman, told The Post that the teen’s primary sickness is addiction to nicotine. The parents provide snapshots of advertisements from the e-cigarette company that are similar to those used by Phillip Morris, which they claim has a track record of marketing tobacco products to minors. One of the adds shows a line ...

Utah creep broke into woman’s home and watched her sleep

A Utah woman was arrested for allegedly breaking into another woman’s home and watching her sleep, according to a report. Tyra Jones, 27, was charged with burglary and criminal mischief for the awkward intrusion that took place about 2 a.m. Sunday, according to KUTV. The startled homeowner froze when she awoke to Jones looking directly at her, the report said, citing police records. The victim eventually asked Jones what she was doing, and left her bed to check on her son, who happened to know Jones. When the family returned to the bedroom, Jones was allegedly poking through the woman’s closet with her cell phone flashlight on, the report said. The son eventually escorted Jones outside and she was later caught by cops. Jones claimed to authorities that somebody inside the house let in, but the person she named doesn’t reside there. Luis Severino looks like ace in long-awaited Yankees return

The Yankees’ season-long wait for Luis Severino finally ended Tuesday night and in the right-hander’s first outing of the season, he certainly looked like the ace they’d hoped he’d be. Severino mowed down the Angels over four innings in his return from right rotator cuff inflammation that was followed by a severe lat strain. He topped out at 98 mph and made some of his best pitches when he needed to. After throwing his final pitch of the night for the final out of the fourth inning, he received handshakes in the dugout. Severino took the mound and immediately fired a 93 mph fastball to Brian Goodwin, but the center fielder worked a 12-pitch ...

Bermuda judge told court he was ‘horny’ during murder trial

A now-retired judge in Bermuda has been slammed by the Court of Appeal in England for remarking that he was getting “horny” during a murder trial, according to reports. Carlisle Greaves, who served as a junior Supreme Court judge, was presiding over the murder trial last fall for defendant Khyri Smith-Williams when he told the court: “All this sex is beginning to get me horny,” the Royal Gazette reported. Greaves made the comment as a witness in the trial testified that he had shared some of the same women as Smith-Williams, according to the news outlet. Ultimately, Smith-Williams was found guilty in the 2011 shooting death of Colford Ferguson and sentenced to 35 years in prison last October. His lawyer, Jerome Lynch, had filed appeal with a higher court, claiming that the judge acted inappropriately during the trial, the Royal Gazette reported. The Court of Appeal rejected the appeal, but appeal judge Maurice Kay took the opportunity to knock Greaves for his comments. “In parti...

Elizabeth Warren made segregationist during NYC rally

During a speech to 20,000 supporters in Manhattan Monday, Elizabeth Warren hailed Frances Perkins, who became a workers rights activist after the deadly 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. But Perkins had a less admirable and less well known legacy later in life — as a critic of the Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision that outlawed segregation in public schools. Americans, she said at the time of the 1954 decision, “should be nice to Negroes,” but not necessarily have to go to school with them. And that left the Massachusetts Democratic senator in a position that her staff didn’t want to talk about following her own harsh criticism of fellow presidential candidate Joe Biden over his tone deaf comments about being pals with a couple of segregationist southern senators. “I’m not here to criticize other Democrats, but it’s never OK to celebrate segregationists. Never,” Warren sniffed in June after Biden’s gaffes, in which he cited his friendships with Mississippi S...

Colin Kaepernick is courting desperate NFL teams

While starting quarterbacks continue to drop like flies, the one who voluntarily took a knee is itching for another chance. Colin Kaepernick’s agent has reached out to the many teams in need of another signal caller, according to reporter Chris Williamson. The former 49ers quarterback hasn’t played a down since opting out of his contract in 2016, the same year he knelt during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and social injustice, but continues to work out in hope one desperate franchise will sign him. The Steelers lost Ben Roethlisberger to season-ending elbow surgery on Monday, while the Saints will be without Drew Brees (thumb) for an estimated six weeks. There are the Panthers, too, who may be without Cam Newton (foot) for some time, and then the Jets, who are down to third-stringer Luke Falk. The Colts, who suddenly lost starter Andrew Luck to retirement two weeks before the season, passed on Kaepernick, instead signing then-backup Jacoby Brissett to an ext...

Thief takes six donuts in botched Dunkin’ Donuts robbery

A bumbling thief settled for about a half dozen donuts when he couldn’t pop open the register at an East Village Dunkin’ Donuts, cops said Tuesday. The sweet-toothed robber jumped over the counter at the shop on East 14th Street near Avenue B just after 9:30 a.m. Friday — expecting to make off with the loot in the register, according to police. But his plan floundered when he failed to open the checkout drawer and grabbed five or six donuts and stuffed them in a paper bag, cops said. A 38-year-old employee tried to stop the donut thief but the robber repeatedly punched him in the face and took off, according to police. The worker was treated for minor injuries by EMS, cops said. The NYPD released a surveillance photo of the suspect Tuesday evening. Colts kicker trying to work out his ‘demons’

The missed kicks were getting to Adam Vinatieri, but not enough to make the 47-year-old Colts veteran consider hanging up his cleats. After missing seven kicks over the first three games of the season, the four-time Super Bowl winner made some cryptic comments to reporters that made it seem as if he was contemplating retirement. Instead, Vinatieri is focused on getting back to being the legendary kicking machine he’s been for over 23 NFL seasons. “I’m going to work a lot this week to get those demons so I can go clear-headed, step on the field and just do my job,” Vinatieri said Tuesday. “I think anybody that has had a bad game, or, I dunno, I guess if you go out golfing and you hook a couple balls, are you thinking about it until you get it figured out? I’ll spend some time this week working those [demons] out,” Vinatieri said. Mired in one of the worst stretches of his Hall-of-Fame career, Vinatieri didn’t like how he left things after missing two more extra point attempts in In...

Cops return bride-to-be’s wedding dress after catching thief

It was almost like rain — on her wedding day. A bride-to-be was reunited with her wedding dress when NYPD officers in Brooklyn tracked down the thief who stole it. The department’s 70th Precinct in Kensington tweeted out the happy ending on Tuesday afternoon, posting an image of two cops and the unidentified woman with her Temperley London gown. “When Officers Depalma & Lopez received a call about a stolen package, they went beyond simply writing a report,” the post read. “Tracking down the thief resulted in the Bride-to-be being reunited with her wedding dress & the BIG DAY saved!” The NYPD wasn’t immediately able to provide details surrounding the crime and arrest. Calmatic is gonna take “House Party” to the old town road. The director of the music video for “Old Town Road (Remix)” is set to remake “House Party,” the 1990 cult classic starring Christopher Martin, Christopher Reid and Martin Lawrence, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The “House Party” remake for New Line Cinema marks the first big-screen feature for Calmatic, who helped Lil Nas X reach mega stardom with a music video for “Old Town Road.” The video for the catchy tune has over 408 million views on YouTube and broke several Billboard records. The reboot is packed with star power. It will also be produced by LeBron James along with his partner Maverick Carter for SpringHill Entertainment. Calmatic is set to keep “the hip-hop roots for the new House Party” intact, since he’s collaborated with hip-hop artists like Khalid and Anderson Paak in the past, reports THR.
