Daniil Medvedev feeds off boos, advances to quarters

The boos continued, and so did Daniil Medvedev’s U.S. Open run. The fifth-ranked Russian, the villain of the tournament, will take that trade-off. He reached his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal Sunday night and didn’t mind how he has been received by the Flushing fans. After the winning point, he danced, further angering the crowd. As he did Friday night, Medvedev egged the fans on in his on-court interview, thanking them for motivating him with their jeers. “After the match, I engaged a little bit with the crowd,” Medvedev said after topping Dominik Koepfer, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (2), at Louis Armstrong Stadium, advancing to face No. 23 Stan Wawrinka. “But we all know how [the] New York crowd can be. It’s probably the most electric crowd in the world, I think. Especially, I mean, playing this week on big courts, I could feel it. Today I was just engaging with the crowd and hopefully — hopefully it was fun for them and for me. As I said, it gave me a lot of energy to win.” His vill...

Teen phenom Coco Gauff is far from finished

Cocomania may be done at the U.S. Open. But McCoco is alive and well. Coco Gauff’s stunning singles run ended in tears with Saturday’s much-hyped loss to world-No. 1 Naomi Osaka. But the 15-year-old American phenom was all smiles and giggles while partnering with Caty McNally to reach the third round of women’s doubles. Gauff and McNally earned a 6-3, 7-6 (9) second-round win over Nicole Melichar and Kveta Peschke at a packed Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sunday. “I came into both matches with the same mentality,” Gauff said. “I just think the difference between [the two] is that [Sunday] we won and [Saturday] I lost.” It was an entirely different vibe in the laugh-filled aftermath, where — despite a pre-match lesson in who Armstrong was — Gauff thought his nickname was Saxamo (it’s Satchmo), and McNally thought he played the saxophone (he plays the trumpet). It’s a reminder that they’re 32 years old — combined. The duo still hasn’t dropped a set since teaming up, staving off seven ...

Why Brett Gardner’s ‘edge’ means so much to the Yankees

Mike Tauchman started it all, drawing the leadoff walk, which sparked a three-run eighth inning. Mike Ford finished it off, blasting the walk-off home run to seal the Yankees’ 5-4 comeback win over the A’s. The fans who filed into Yankee Stadium on Sunday weren’t supposed to be familiar with either first-year Yankee, who have helped produce a bizarre and memorable season, in which injuries seemingly have no impact on the World Series contender. The longest-tenured player in pinstripes keeps playing his part, too. With the Yankees trailing by one entering the ninth, Brett Gardner validated the never-ending optimism in The Bronx, and opened the final frame by crushing a game-tying homer to right off Liam Hendriks. One at-bat later, Ford wrapped up the series with his game-winner. Prior to Gardner’s shot, Hendriks — who entered with a 1.53 ERA — had converted eight straight save opportunities, and had not allowed a home run on the road this season. Despite striking out in his first ...

Man dies in jail awaiting trial for death of infant son found in freezer

A Georgia man was found dead in an Alabama jail where he was serving time in connection with his 6-month-old son who was found dead in a hotel freezer, a report said. Carlton James Mathis, 30, was found unresponsive at about 10 p.m. on Friday at Houston County jail in Dothan, Ala. and was later confirmed dead, according to AL.com. Mathis was scheduled for trial in the death of his son, Curtis James Oakes. The baby was found wrapped in towels, placed in a garbage bag and stuffed in a freezer in an Alabama hotel room. Court records show the baby died after ingesting methamphetamine. The child’s mother, Amanda Gail Oakes, pleaded guilty earlier this week to charges of manslaughter and corpse abuse. Jalen Hurts makes loud Heisman statement in Oklahoma debut

NORMAN, Okla. — New Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more, and the fourth-ranked Sooners rolled past Houston 49-31 on Sunday night. It was Hurts’ first game for Oklahoma since he transferred from Alabama. He put on a show as his predecessor, 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray, watched. He posted 508 total yards, the fifth-most in school history. Hurts had a nearly flawless first half He completed 13 of 15 passes for 174 yards and rushed 11 times for 128 yards to help the Sooners lead 21-10 at the break. Overall, the Sooners gained 686 total yards. Hurts finished with 332 yards passing and 176 yards rushing. Charleston Rambo caught three passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and Trey Sermon ran for 91 yards for the Sooners. Oklahoma’s defense was sharp too, constantly pressuring Houston quarterback D’Eriq King and limiting him to 87 yards passing in the first half. King, one of the nation’s top quarterbacks last season, finished wit...

Mike Bryan fined at US Open for gun gesture with racket

Tennis star Mike Bryan was fined $10,000 for pointing his racket at a line judge — as if he were shooting a gun — during his US Open match at Flushing Meadows on Saturday night. The move, which was caught on video , came just hours after seven people were killed and more than 20 others wounded during a shooting rampage in Odessa, Texas. Bryan was playing in a doubles match with his twin brother, Bob, when he made the gesture. The duo had been trailing by a set and had just challenged a lob that had been called in by the line judge — in favor of their opponents, Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain and Federico Delbonis of Argentina. A replay review showed that the ball had in fact landed out, and Bryan chose to express his frustration with his racket. Placing the head on his shoulder, the six-time men’s doubles champ was caught on video pointing the handle towards the judge as if it were the barrel of a gun. He “aims” the racket and pretends to shoot. “This guy should not be all...

Father of two killed in front of wife and kids in Texas mass shooting

A dad-of-two was identified on Sunday as one of the Texas mass shooting victims by his sister — who said he was killed in front of his wife and children as the family sat at a traffic light. Former math teacher Joseph Griffith, 40, was one of the seven people killed Saturday afternoon by a gunman on a drive-by shooting spree in the Odessa area, his older sister Carla Byrne told The Washington Post. “This maniac pulled up next to him and shot him, took away his life, murdered my baby brother. Like nothing,” Byrne said. “We are so broken.” The family was scheduled to have their portraits taken on Saturday, the Odessa American newspaper reported. “It’s a horrible tragedy for that family to lose Joe, for all of them to be there and be witness to that is just unspeakable,” Rick Pharaoh, a member of their congregation at First Baptist Church in Odessa told the paper. “How do you ever get over something like that?” he asked. ” I think we need to band together and just show love to each ...

Defending U.S. Open champion Novak Djokovic retired in the third set of his fourth-round match with Stan Wawrinka because of a nagging left shoulder injury at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday night. Texas shooter threatened neighbor, sat on roof and shot animals

A neighbor of the Odessa mass shooter says she reported him to police last month — after he threatened her with a rifle for leaving trash near his property — but cops couldn’t find his house on account of it having no GPS address or electricity. The woman told CNN that Seth Ator, 36, would often sit on top of his home and shoot animals at night, which he would then go and retrieve afterwards. She said cops tried to confront Ator following her report to police last month, but his property didn’t show up on GPS and was difficult to find. Ator would often sit and sleep inside his Toyota Camry with the heat on when the weather would get to cold, the woman said. He also had no running water. Another neighbor told NewsWest9 that she, too, was visited by Ator — who showed up at her door with his rifle. It was unclear what sparked that incident. The woman said Ator owned at least two guns. Cops shot and killed the Texas madman following his shooting rampage in Odessa on Saturday. He mana...

Bullpen falters as Mets don’t gain ground in NL wild-card race

PHILADELPHIA — The possibility of sweeping the Phillies and slicing another game from the wild-card deficit hovered for the Mets on Sunday, but then the bottom of the eighth inning struck. Daniel Zamora, a lefty reliever who had been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse earlier in the day, allowed a single to Bryce Harper leading off the inning. Enter Jeurys Familia, who for all his recent improvement still hasn’t shown he can be trusted in a big spot. Scott Kingery added to that sentiment by delivering a bases-loaded double against Familia that scored three runs in the Mets’ 5-2 loss at Citizens Bank Park. The Mets remained four games behind the Cubs in the race for the NL’s second wild card. The Cubs lost 4-0 earlier in the day to Milwaukee. Upon entering, Familia walked Rhys Hoskins, retired Brad Miller and intentionally walked Cesar Hernandez to load the bases. Kingery followed with a shot to the left-center gap that scored all three. Brandon Nimmo came sprinting home from third on...

West Point cadet falls to death at popular cliff-diving spot

A West Point cadet fell to his death at a popular cliff-diving spot upstate, according to cops. The young man was “hanging onto a rock ledge” at Fawn’s Leap in the Green County town of Hunter when a portion of the rock suddenly broke off — causing his fatal tumble, police said in a press release. Life saving measures were attempted at the scene, but were unsuccessful. The man, whose name was being withheld for 24 hours per Dept. of Defense policy, was described as a Cadet Candidate at the US Military Academy. It was unclear if he was attempting a dive at Fawn’s Leap when he fell. The swimming hole is located along a stretch of Kaaterskill Creek, which is famous for its crystal-clear water and steep cliffs. Videos and pictures posted online show people taking epic leaps of faith — some at heights over 50 feet. The area, which is roughly 110 miles north of Manhattan, has become a popular spot for Instagrammers. At least four people have died while attempting to snap pictures for t...

Cash-advance app Earnin changes its tune amid NYS probe

A cash-advance app backed by rapper Nas has been scrambling to escape regulatory heat over concerns that it has been doing illegal payday lending in the Big Apple, The Post has learned. Earnin, a Silicon Valley startup whose investors also include venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, quietly disabled a controversial feature for New York users that links the size of its loans to voluntary “tips,” according to sources close to the situation. The tips — which can stretch as high as $14 on a $100 weekly loan — are comparable to the crippling annualized percentage rates that have gotten payday loans banned in 15 states including New York, critics say. Earnin did away with the pay-to-play feature — which handed out as much as 10 times more in loans to users who voluntarily tipped, according to internal documents and a source close to the company — around the time of a March 28 subpoena from the New York Department of Financial Services, according to sources. While the revision was n...

Police looking for 15-year-old boy swept away at Jersey Shore

A 15-year-old boy was swept away while swimming with his sister at the Jersey Shore on Sunday, police said. The siblings were wading in the water near the Newark Avenue jetty in Spring Lake about 2:45 p.m. when they appeared to get caught in a rip current and went under, Spring Lake Police Chief Edward M. Kerr Jr. said. Lifeguards and a relative rushed over and were able to pull the girl out, the Asbury Park Press reported. A massive search involving members of the US Coast Guard, rescue divers and up to 80 lifeguards from neighboring towns, was conducted on Sunday afternoon. “It’s a very, very tough situation and we’re going to try our best to do whatever we can for the family,” Kerr said. The New Jersey State Police Marine Unit suspended its search Sunday at dusk, with plans to resume Monday morning. Local police will continue to patrol the shoreline overnight. Ashleigh Barty is already moving on from her loss

After the season that Ashleigh Barty has had, the women’s No. 2 seed wasn’t all that distraught after she was beaten by the No. 18 seed, Qiang Wang, 6-2, 6-4, in the fourth round of the U.S. Open at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Barty, a 23-year-old Australian, has won three times on Tour this season, including her first Grand Slam victory at the French Open in May. She won at least three matches in each of the season’s first three Grand Slams, including a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open. But she couldn’t outlast Wang, as the 27-year-old from China advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal to face the also-victorious Serena Williams. “It’s frustrating now,” Barty said. “Give me an hour and I’ll be right. It’s an opportunity, it’s a new day tomorrow. Just because we’ve had a tough hour and a half on the court, it doesn’t reflect on the year that I’ve had or the couple of weeks I’ve had here in New York.” Making the loss a little easier to take for ...

South Carolina to evacuate coast as Hurricane Dorian closes in

South Carolina’s governor has ordered a mandatory evacuation of his state’s entire coast as Hurricane Dorian threatens. Gov. Henry McMaster’s order goes into effect at noon Monday, when state troopers will begin reversing lanes so that people can all head inland on major coastal highways. Authorities say the order covers approximately 830,000 people, many of whom will be evacuating for the fourth time in four years. McMaster says he knows some people won’t be happy having to leave their home. But he says “we believe we can keep everyone alive.” The National Hurricane Center forecasts the center of Dorian is to stay off shore while paralleling the South Carolina coast starting Wednesday afternoon. But a small error in the forecast could send the eye and strongest winds into the state.
