Nets’ Caris LeVert can’t wait to play with ‘big brother’ Kevin Durant

The Nets, since general manager Sean Marks and coach Kenny Atkinson arrived in Brooklyn, have built a reputation as a gritty team that plays hard. After signing free agents Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving this summer, many have questioned how adding a pair of All-Stars to the mix is going to change that hard-working ethos, and how much it could take the edge off. According to Caris LeVert, it won’t. “It’s kind of who we are,” LeVert said Wednesday on ESPN. “That’s the easy part for us. That’s who we are as players, as a team. “I feel everyone has a chip on their shoulders from 1 to 15 before those guys, and I know those guys do, too. I feel everyone at this level, that’s kind of what you have to have to be one of the top players. That’s our identity. … I know we won’t lose that.” LeVert wasn’t just the Nets’ best player at the beginning and the end of last season, he’s as much a part of that identity, that Nets DNA, as anybody on the roster. The 24-year-old guard was Marks’ first ...

Manhattan DA subpoenas Trump Org over hush-money payments

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Thursday subpoenaed the Trump Organization over hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels in the run-up to the 2016 presidential elections. Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office picked up the probe just weeks after federal prosecutors announced they’d completed their investigation into the payments, made by former-Trump fixer Michael Cohen. “This is a political hit job,” Marc Mukasey, a lawyer for the organization, told The Post in an email. “Its just harassment of the President, his family, and his business, using subpoenas and leaks as weapons. We will respond as appropriate.” Coming off of his victory in the trial of Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher, who was accused of several war crimes, Mukasey said he was relishing the next fight. The summons from State prosecutors, first reported by The New York Times, was for records tied to payments Cohen helped arrange for Daniels after she claimed she had an affair with Trump. Cohen admi...

GOP Rep. Will Hurd announces retirement, will not run again

Texas Rep. Will Hurd — the only black Republican in the House — announced on Thursday that he won’t seek reelection next year. He revealed the decision on Twitter , saying he’s leaving “Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security.” “While Congress has a role in these issues, so does the private sector and civil society,” he added. Hurd in 2014 quit his former job as an undercover CIA officer to run for office. He’s been serving in the 23rd Congressional District of Texas since 2015. A large portion of his district borders Mexico — and its been the target of Democrats looking to flip the seat. The incumbent lawmaker narrowly defeated Democrat challenger Gina Ortiz Jones in 2018. He becomes the sixth Republican lawmaker — and third House GOP member from Texas — to step down in the past two weeks. Hurd recently made the news for condemning President Trump’s attacks on Rep. Elijah Cumming’s and his Maryland district. “I wouldn’t be doing those....

Le’Veon Bell’s value to Jets is shown in one play

It was just one play in the second week of training camp. But it was a play that could serve as a preview of big things to come for the Jets running game. Le’Veon Bell, taking a handoff from second-year quarterback Sam Darnold at the 1-yard line on an offense-backed-up series in team drills, burst through the line of a scrimmage like a rocket and gained a minimum of 20 to 30 yards. Because it was just a practice where there is no tackling to the ground, it’s difficult to know just how far that Bell run might have gone — possibly 99 yards to the house — if it were a real game, but the point was made. “You don’t know unless you play it all the way out,’’ Jets coach Adam Gase said. “But I’ll take that all day long. It looked like there was a pretty good crease and he hit it nice. He got out there pretty good.’’ Bell in the open field is going to mean significant offensive production for the Jets. It’s going to make Sam Darnold a better quarterback and the receivers better receivers. ...

Trump compares Baltimore murder rate to war-torn Afghanistan

President Trump suggested that Baltimore’s murder rate is higher than that of war-torn Afghanistan during a campaign rally in Ohio on Thursday night. “The homicide rate in Baltimore is significantly higher than El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala,” Trump said during his speech. Trump was likely referencing a Washington Examiner article that compared Baltimore’s numbers in 2019 with those of each of the three northern triangle countries fueling the migrant crisis on the US’s southern border. “I believe it’s higher than – give me a place that’s pretty bad,” he said, asking the crowd at his Cincinnati rally to shout out suggestions. “The guy says Afghanistan,” Trump laughed. “I believe it’s higher than Afghanistan.” Knowing he’d likely get in trouble for the claim he added, “I’ll check the numbers, and if we’re wrong, they’ll tell us tomorrow.” “It will be headlines: Trump exaggerated,” the president added. At the same rally, Trump said, “I don’t want to be controversial,” when knock...

Missing Texas mom was wanted on 66 charges when she vanished: reports

A Texas mother missing for more than two weeks was once on El Paso’s “Most Wanted” list and was wanted on dozens of criminal charges when she disappeared, reports said Thursday. Erika Gaytan, 29, vanished after a July 13th concert date at the El Paso County Coliseum — with cops saying she “could be in danger” when they announced she was missing. At the time she disappeared, Gaytan faced 66 charges of credit card abuse and an accusation of criminal mischief stemming for a 2017 case, local outlet KVIA reported. The mom of a 7-year-old son is scheduled in court for that case Friday — and also has another court appearance scheduled in September, according to the outlet. She was one of El Paso’s “Most Wanted” back in 2017, the outlet said. Still, police said they don’t believe the charges were a factor in her disappearance at this point. They said she is still considered to be endangered. Police previously released a photo of Gaytan in the white dress she was wearing the night of her...

RFK’s granddaughter Saoirse Kennedy Hill overdoses, dies at 22

Robert F. Kennedy’s granddaughter has been identified as the 22-year-old woman who fatally overdosed at the family’s Cape Cod compound on Thursday, according to a report. Two family friends told The New York Times that the victim was Saoirse Kennedy Hill, who was staying at the sprawling Hyannis Port, Massachusetts home of her grandmother, 91-year-old Ethel Kennedy. By the time medics arrived about 2:30 p.m., Saoirse was already in cardiac arrest, the Hyannis News reported.  She was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where was was pronounced dead, the Times said. Saoirse is the daughter of Courtney Kennedy Hill. Ethel Kennedy is the widow of late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. It’s unclear if she was home at the time. The Kennedy Compound consists of several waterfront homes along the Nantucket Sound in Hyannis Port. The death takes place 50 years after the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s car plunged off a bridge off of Martha’s Vineyard, killing his 28-year-old passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. ...

Facebook probed for squashing competition through acquisitions

The Federal Trade Commission is probing whether Facebook snapped up companies like Instagram in order to squash up-and-coming rivals, according to a new report. The FTC has been reaching out to founders of companies Facebook purchased to learn whether CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been eliminating threats through acquisition, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. That jives with The Post’s reporting earlier this year revealing that a high-ranking Facebook executive said at the time of the $1 billion acquisition of Instagram that the purchase would serve to eliminate a potential competitor. The FTC got a hold of that executive’s statement in 2012 before the merger was completed. Then-FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz used the statement in a lawsuit contesting the hookup, which is now widely viewed as one of the most successful tech mergers in history, two sources with close knowledge of the deliberations told The Post. But the deal went through when Leibowitz failed to generate enough supp...

Remmers, Zeitler aim to solidify o-line

When Hal Hunter looks at the right side of his offensive line, the Giants position coach sees a serious, workmanlike tandem on the field and a split personality off of it. But the two steely veterans are finding out they have common interests beyond just shoring up lackluster right guard and right tackle spots that have been more like a crumbling wall in recent years for the Giants. “More than I thought when I first met him,” right tackle Mike Remmers said of right guard Kevin Zeitler. “We were talking about Nintendo 64 yesterday and how much we love playing video games, especially on the 64. He’s got his N64 with him here. We don’t get a lot of free time, but when we do, it’s nice to kick back, put the feet up and relax and play some games.” The long days of training camp allow for such discoveries. Remmers is a Mario Kart kind of guy. Zeitler likes Super Smash Bros., among others. If the two offseason additions can be as good at giving Eli Manning time to pass and opening up hol...

Man poisoned his wife’s coffee and gets just 60 days in jail

A man in Michigan who was convicted of poisoning his wife by spiking her coffee received a sentence of 60 days in jail on Thursday — which he will serve on the weekends. Brian Kozlowski, 46 — whose wife said he tried to kill her by placing eight sleeping pills in her morning coffee — was handed the sentence after an impassioned plea from the former wife, Therese Kozlowski, according to The Macomb Daily. “Brian’s continuous, methodical, and calculated plot to poison me included a complete disregard for human life, including his own daughter, along with hundreds of other drivers who he put at risk every day for weeks,” Therese Kozlowski said in court. “I believe this was attempted murder. Once Brian realized he lost me and there was no getting me to stay in this unhealthy marriage, his goal was to eliminate me.” Judge Antonio Viviano in Macomb County Circuit Court was inclined to give the man probation until he heard her plea. The coffee spiking took place during the couple’s divo...

DJ LeMahieu is returning to where Yankees need him most

On Feb. 20, the Yankees had Luke Voit and Greg Bird to play first base and DJ LeMahieu was viewed as a very good player signed to a two-year deal for $24 million who would move between second and third base. Yet, when LeMahieu arrived in Tampa for spring training, he had a first baseman’s glove and took ground balls at the position. “I don’t think I will be the everyday first baseman by any means,’’ LeMahieu told The Post. Move to Friday night when the Yankees host the Red Sox in the first of four games and it’s quite possible LeMahieu, whose .332 batting average topped the AL entering Thursday night’s action, will see the bulk of playing time at first base. Bird played 10 games, went on the IL with a plantar fascia tear and hasn’t played since April 13. Voit is on the IL with a sports hernia that will be treated aggressively but if surgery is required he would likely be lost for the remainder of the season. The Yankees have Edwin Encarnacion to play first base but LeMahieu, a th...

Thieves swipe handbags from Saint Laurent, escape in fake cab

A group of brazen, fast-moving thieves stormed into Saint Laurent in Manhattan Thursday evening and dashed out with a small fortune in pricey handbags before speeding off in a phony yellow cab. Police said the thieves pulled up to the fashionable Fifth Avenue retailer at 5:50 p.m. in an SUV that was painted yellow to resemble a taxi. One of them remained behind the wheel while two or three others dashed inside and made off with the high-end handbags, getting away before police arrived. Cops were still trying to determine how many bags were taken. Detectives are also looking for a possible link to a similar May 3 incident at the Louis Vuitton store nearby where thieves used a sedan painted yellow to speed off. Giants safety Kenny Ladler has big day against the offense

Highlights from the Giants practice on Thursday: Something good Kenny Ladler was consistently ball-hawking throughout practice. The safety had a pair of pass breakups against Alex Tanney and later intercepted Kyle Lauletta in the end zone. Something bad During seven-on-seven red-zone drills, the defense had a tough time keeping the offense out of the end zone. The unit gave up three straight touchdowns at one point, which seemed to catch defensive coordinator James Bettcher’s attention. Caught my eye During the team’s blitz period, cornerback Julian Love was dropping back as a safety with the first unit as Jabrill Peppers was up near the line of scrimmage. Versatility will only help Love, a rookie, see the field. Keeping up with the Jones It was another strong day for Daniel Jones, highlighted by a beauty of a deep touchdown pass to Paul Perkins. The running back ran a wheel route and Jones hit him in stride down the sideline, leading him into the end zone. Jones also flashed ...

Hobbs & Shaw’ pulls off crazy car stunts

Without a high speed chase or four, the “The Fast & the Furious” would be no more than the idle and the content. So the ninth film in the franchise, “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” appropriately features several international, high-octane pursuits involving the title characters played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham. One of the most elaborate of these sees a sleek — and pricey — McLaren 720S sports car zooming away from a futuristic, shape-shifting motorcycle through London’s financial district. “The logistics behind a car chase of that size are nothing short of mind-numbing,” director David Leitch tells The Post. “Where can you lock down 10 blocks of downtown London? Nowhere.” What Leitch and his team did instead was film isolated moments — a left turn here, an explosion there — in smaller sections of the neighborhood, called “The City,” in order to ensure iconic architecture, such as the Gherkin skyscraper, got screen time. The longer, sustain...

Mets’ Jeff McNeil dives into crowd netting for catch

CHICAGO — The Flying Squirrel knows no bounds. Another Mets victory, this one a 4-0 blanking of the White Sox on Thursday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field to extend their winning streak to seven, featured the stellar starting pitching and sufficient offense that have defined this run. This one, however, included a bonus: All-Star Jeff “Flying Squirrel” McNeil leaping into the newly extended netting here in right field after snaring Eloy Jimenez’s foul fly ball, on the run, in the fifth inning. “Kind of fun,” a bashful-looking McNeil said after the game. “You’ve seen catchers and stuff go into the net. It’s going to spring you back in.” That it did. Prior to this White Sox homestand, when the team expanded its netting to the foul poles as a response to some high-profile fan injuries around the game, McNeil would have had no choice but to let the momentum take him directly into the seats. “It would’ve been unfortunate for whoever’s in the front row,” he said, “but I’m going in th...

Texas school superintendent suspended over drunk Whataburger fight

EL PASO, Texas — An El Paso school district has suspended its superintendent after San Antonio police reported he was inebriated at a Whataburger when he head-butted another superintendent. The school board for the Ysleta Independent School District on Tuesday suspended Superintendent Xavier De La Torre for three days without pay for not promptly telling the board about the June altercation. De La Torre was in San Antonio with other educators for training provided by the Texas Association of School Boards. A police report said he appeared to be intoxicated and head-butted the superintendent for the Socorro Independent School District, which covers much of El Paso County. De La Torre, who earns nearly $314,000, in a statement last week denied he was the aggressor and said he didn’t head-butt anyone. No criminal charges were filed. Jets training camp: Offense hitting its marks

Highlights from the Jets practice on Thursday: Something good In one of the final 11-on-11 team drills, quarterback Sam Darnold connected with receiver Quincy Enunwa to his left and cornerback Trumaine Johnson and safety Jamal Adams collided on the play, leaving the wide-open Enunwa to score on a 25-yard TD. Afterward, Enunwa said that was called a “mesh’’ play and it is designed to confuse the secondary with hopes of causing a collision. Adams was slow to get up, but was OK and carried on. Something bad Receiver Charone Peake, who is having a strong, productive camp, dropped a lollipop of a throw by rookie free-agent quarterback Luke Falk deep down the left sideline. Peake, who’s 6-foot-2, had his man beaten, leaped into the air and had the ball in both hands but failed to come down with it. Caught my eye Rookie No. 3-overall draft pick Quinnen Williams is showing up more regularly in practice. On Thursday, the defensive lineman stuffed running back Elijah McGuire behind the li...
