Charred Conception dive boat ruins brought to surface

This charred hull is all that remains of the Conception after a devastating Sept. 2 blaze killed 34 people on board. The burned ruins of the doomed California dive boat were brought to the surface by a salvage team off the coast of Santa Barbara on Thursday, 10 days after an inferno broke out on the vessel. A newly-released National Transportation and Safety Board report found all five crew members were asleep when the fire broke out on the 79-foot scuba diving boat in the early hours of the morning. The boat — which was ferrying passengers on the last legs of a three-day diving excursion — also had no night watchman on duty to alert passengers of the disaster, authorities said. The victims — 33 passengers and one crew member — were asleep in a section below the deck and had no way to escape, authorities said. A probe being conducted by the US Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles, the Coast Guard and the FBI is expected to last a year. Credit: Source link The post Charred Conc...

Pelosi won’t talk as Judiciary Committee moves on impeachment

A testy Nancy Pelosi ripped reporters Thursday for peppering her with questions about impeachment after the House Judiciary Committee approved rules for its investigation into President Trump. “I’m not answering any more questions on investigations,” Pelosi told reporters at her weekly press conference, after saying she supported the committee’s work. “I’m not answering any more questions on this subject,” she snapped as the questions kept coming about an issue that has divided her caucus between those pushing for the president’s impeachment and those preaching caution. The committee’s 24-17 party line vote does not begin formal impeachment proceedings but broadens the panel’s investigative powers — which could eventually lead to articles of impeachment against the president. The procedures would allow Manhattan Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the committee’s chair, to hold hearings on evidence against the president. In addition to members being able to question witnesses, staff counsel wou...

City to install designated electric car charging ports in all 5 boroughs

Watt the hell? The city wants to remove 100 parking spots to make way for charging stations for electric cars — even though they make up just 0.4 percent of vehicles in the Big Apple. Fifty curbside hubs are to be installed by next spring in “pilot” zones across the five boroughs, according to the city Department of Transportation. But residents in targeted neighborhoods are already buzzing about the parking they’ll lose to make way for the niche “volts-wagons.” “That’s so stupid,” said Upper East Sider Maya Jaafar, 26, who suggested officials should instead focus on public transit. “The city is congested as it is.” Charging stations are planned for neighborhoods in every borough, including “No Park” Slope and Williamsburg in Brooklyn, Long Island City in Queens, Staten Island’s North Shore and Morris Heights and Kingsbridge in The Bronx. In Manhattan, the city is targeting the Upper West Side, Upper East Side and Washington Heights. Each station has space for two cars to juic...

‘We’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47’

He didn’t used an “F-bomb” — but Beto O’Rourke was emphatic about taking away people’s assault rifles during Thursday night’s Democratic debate. “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” the former Texas congressman vowed from the debate stage in Houston, Texas. The White House hopeful has been outspoken about stricter gun-control measures, especially in the wake of last month’s mass shooting at a Walmart in his hometown of El Paso where 22 people were killed. During an interview on CNN earlier this month he declared: “Yes, this is f–ed up,” when asked about widespread gun violence in the country. He’s previously blamed Congress for failing to pass meaningful gun laws. If elected, O’Rourke on Thursday confirmed that he’d be for a mandatory buyback of weapons like the AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, which have been used in many of the recent mass shootings. “If it’s a weapon that was designed to kill people on a battlefield, if the high-impact, high-velocity round when it ...

Candidates warned not to swear at Democratic debate in Houston

Paging Beto O’Rourke. ABC News warned candidates at Thursday’s Democratic debate in Texas to keep it clean — just weeks after the former Texas congressman dropped an “F bomb” while discussing gun violence in an on-air interview, the latest in a series of profanities he’s uttered on the campaign trail. The 10 White House hopefuls were cautioned by the debate broadcaster to “avoid cursing or expletives in accordance with federal law and FCC guidelines,” according to a CNN report. “We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that, as the debate will air on the ABC broadcast network, we are governed by Federal Communication Commission indecency rules,” said a memo from the network, sent to the Democratic National Committee earlier this week and forwarded to campaigns. “We will not be broadcasting on any delay, so there will be no opportunity to edit out foul language,” the network cautioned. While tensions were high for some of the first hour of the debate, no cuss words were ut...

Marcus Stroman’s mechanical adjustments pay off

Marcus Stroman saw this kind of confidence with two Blue Jays teams that reached the postseason during his Toronto tenure. “It’s kind of unwavering,” the right-hander said after the Mets stomped the Diamondbacks 11-1 Thursday for a fourth straight victory. “You show up in the clubhouse and we feel like you are going to win each and every day. We kind of have that collective feeling, and that’s not something that you can kind of install. It’s something that is kind of there, so it’s awesome. “Everyone, regardless of if we win or lose the previous day, everyone just kind of shows up and kind of knows what they are capable of.” Stroman contributed to this one with his best outing in a Mets uniform: one run allowed on four hits and four walks over 6 ¹/₃ innings. The quality start was only Stroman’s second in eight appearances with the Mets. “He was getting a lot more contact in the first three pitches, weak contact put in play and that is always going to help anybody,” manager Mickey ...

Raj Rajaratnam spotted leaving $17.5M pad after prison release

Raj who? Eight years after his $70 million insider trading trial shook Wall Street, former Galleon Group founder Raj Rajaratnam is back in town — and trying his best to go unnoticed. “Oh no, not me,” Rajaratnam, 62, told a photographer who spotted the fallen hedgie escaping his $17.5 million Sutton Place apartment on Thursday and called his name. The denial was futile, however, as the ex-billionaire — who was leaving through a side-door service entrance — looks just as he did 11 years ago, right down to his slicked-back hair, mustache and slight limp. Sporting a brand new iPhone, an olive golf shirt, tan pants and leather satchel, the trader-turned-convicted felon seemed to be without a care in the world as he waited near a Sutton Place doorway on 54th Street for his driver, who whisked him away in a dark blue Audi Q5 SUV. Rajaratnam — who’s still required to check in with federal prison officials in Brooklyn — has tried to keep a low profile since he was released from federal pr...

Julian Castro accuses Joe Biden of being forgetful

HOUSTON – Julian Castro went on offense Thursday night and accused Vice President Joe Biden of being forgetful and not living up to the healthcare aspirations of President Barack Obama. “I’m fulfilling the legacy of Barack Obama, and you’re not,” Castro said, after accusing Biden’s healthcare plan of leaving 10 million people uncovered. “That’ll be a surprise to him,” a stunned Biden responded. Castro, Obama’s former Housing and Urban Development Secretary, tried to create a wedge between the former president and his vice president. “We owe a debt of gratitude to President Barack Obama. Of course, I also worked for President Obama,” Castro said. Then Castro turned to Biden: “I know that the problem with your plans is that it leaves 10 million people uncovered….Barack Obama’s vision was not to leave 10 million people uncovered.” Biden pushed back and said Americans wouldn’t have to “buy” into his health care plan — which would expand upon Obamacare with a new government-run publi...

Nancy Pelosi won’t answer questions about impeachment

A testy Nancy Pelosi walked out on reporters Thursday as they peppered her with questions about impeachment after the House Judiciary Committee approved rules for its investigation into President Trump. “I’m not answering any more questions on investigations,” Pelosi said at her weekly press conference. “I’m not answering any more questions on this subject,” the House speaker snapped as the questions kept coming about an issue that has divided her caucus between those pushing for impeachment and those preaching caution. The committee’s 24-17 party-line vote does not begin formal impeachment proceedings, but broadens the panel’s investigative powers — which could lead to articles of impeachment. The procedures would allow Manhattan Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the committee’s chair, to hold hearings on evidence against Trump. Staff counsel would also be able to grill witnesses for an additional hour. Credit: Source link The post Nancy Pelosi won’t answer questions about impeachment app...

Jack Hughes-P.K. Subban era set to start for Devils

It was a huge summer for the Devils, as they were gifted the No. 1-overall pick in the draft and took American center Jack Hughes, then added flamboyant defenseman P.K. Subban in a blockbuster trade the next day. They also signed rugged veteran Wayne Simmonds up-front and executed an impressive trade with the Golden Knights to obtain winger Nikita Gusev. That should bring quite a bit of interest to Newark as the club tries to make the playoffs for just the second time in the past eight seasons. 1) Is Hughes ready? It’s been made very clear that the 18-year-old Hughes is going to get every chance to show he can not only stick in the NHL, but play in the top six. Although not the biggest player, at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, his skating ability and vision already set him apart. 2) Does Subban still have it? Having now been traded twice in the past four years, the 30-year-old has a lot of expectations to live up to — including three years left on his deal that carries an annual salary-c...

Why Sam Darnold’s mono bout is a ‘big deal’

Don’t expect to see Sam Darnold for a while. That is the opinion of Dr. David Chao, the former Chargers team physician who operates the website profootballdoc.com, after the Jets quarterback was diagnosed with mononucleosis. “He’s going to miss a lot of time,” Chao said Thursday. “This isn’t just about how does he feel. It’s about more than that.” The Jets have ruled Darnold out for Monday’s game against the Browns, and coach Adam Gase acknowledged the quarterback could miss several weeks. Chao said the timeline starts at four to six weeks for Darnold. Chao specified the Jets will have three major issues to worry about with Darnold’s diagnosis. First, mono typically causes the spleen and/or liver to enlarge. Someone cannot have any physical contact because of the risk of rupturing the organs. Second, Darnold will feel tired, have a general malaise and will lose weight. That could last for multiple weeks. Finally, the Jets can’t risk Darnold even being around the team because he co...

NYC schools will excuse kids who ditch for climate change rally

Cut class for climate change! The Department of Education will excuse city kids who ditch school next Friday to partake in a Manhattan climate change protest, officials said Thursday. “TEN YEARS. We have ten years to save the planet,” Mayor Bill de Blasio cautioned in a tweet . “Today’s leaders are making decisions for our environment that our kids will have to live with. New York City stands with our young people. They’re our conscience. We support the 9/20 #ClimateStrike.” Legions of adolescent activists across the globe are expected to demand immediate action to combat climate change in advance of a major UN conference on the issue next week. As long as mom and dad sanction their principled truancy, absent kids won’t have attendance records dinged, the DOE said. “We applaud our students when they raise their voices in a safe and respectful manner on issues that matter to them,” the DOE tweeted . Younger children will only be able to leave school and join the rally in the comp...

Trump says people want to work for him because he’s ‘a lot of fun’

A small crowd of people are practically tripping over each other to be the next national security adviser — because “it’s a lot of fun to work with Donald Trump,” the president boasted of himself on Thursday night. “We have 15 candidates,” Trump told reporters of the race to become his fourth national security adviser. “Everybody wants it badly, as you can imagine. And we’ll probably next week, sometime, make that decision,” he said of the post suddenly vacated by John Bolton on Tuesday. “It’s a great job,” the president added. “It’s great because it’s a lot of fun to work with Donald Trump … You know why it’s easy? Because I make all the decisions. ” Earlier Thursday Trump pushed back against commentary that the notoriously bellicose Bolton had earned the president’s ire by being too much of a hawk. “In fact, my views on Venezuela, and especially Cuba, were far stronger than those of John Bolton. He was holding me back!”  the commander-in-chief tweeted . Credit: Source l...

Mets acing Dodgers test this weekend would put fear in LA

Noah Syndergaard pitches to Wilson Ramos on Friday night in a game in which every shake off of a catcher’s sign and each shoulder slump will be dissected for meaning. Hyun-jin Ryu faces Jacob deGrom on Saturday night in a matchup teeming with NL Cy Young implications. But by Sunday night — national TV — the major story line for Dodgers-Mets is going to be what happened in the three-game series. Because the Dodgers have comfortably won their seventh straight NL West title and comfortably lead for the best record in the NL. You know what would be uncomfortable, though? If the Dodgers let the Mets stay hot this weekend? For if you were making a list of teams Los Angeles would prefer to avoid in the five-game division series — which almost certainly will match the Dodgers against the wild-card game winner — the Nationals and Mets would rank 1 and 1A in some form because of what high-end starting pitching could do in a short series. The Nationals are all but assured to be in the Oct. ...

Gruesome Harlem body dump described by witness

The man who discovered a dead body rolled in a red carpet in a trash heap in Harlem Thursday morning described the gruesome scene, which he investigated because he saw the man’s feet sticking out of the pile. Israel Savage, 36, spotted two people looking at the pile while he was walking to his gym at about 5:45 a.m. on West 145th Street and Bradhurst Avenue, he told The Post. “I could tell people we’re agitated. I saw two feet, what appeared to be feet, they had socks on them, hanging out of a trash bag,” Savage said of the discovery. “There were multiple trash bags around this package, a cart, some cardboard, a carpet, and it was all taped. Looked like the intention was to cover the whole thing but the plastic had come off of the feet,” he added. Israel Savage ran into this Starbucks before taking a closer look of the body left on the street. Seth Gottfried Investigators believe this shopping cart was used to move the body. Yankees’ sweep of Tigers has painful consequences

DETROIT — At this rate, the Yankees will cruise to the postseason, but might not have anyone left to play in the games. On a day when they swept a doubleheader from the miserable Tigers, Edwin Encarnacion left the first game with a strained left oblique and J.A. Happ’s biceps tendinitis was revealed following his outing in the opener. And the Yankees’ injury bug continued in the second game, when Gary Sanchez left with left groin tightness before the bottom of the fourth inning. So while the 10-4 Game 1 win and 6-4 victory in the second game were welcomed, they came with a price. Sanchez, who was replaced behind the plate by Kyle Higashioka, attempted to steal second — and was thrown out — to end the top of the third. Sanchez remained in the game and caught the bottom of the inning before Higashioka entered. Sanchez was sidelined twice this season with lower-body injuries — once with a strained groin and then with a left calf injury. Though Aaron Boone said he didn’t believe the...

Photographer plans to capture 30-year timelapse of NYC skyline

A photographer is proving that the one good thing about New Jersey — its view — is true. Joseph DiGiovanna is shooting a 30-year time-lapse of the New York City skyline from his Weehawken window and is already four years into his project, CNN reports. “It’s a living calendar that anyone can be a part of,” he said. So far, DiGiovanna has over 4.2 million images capturing the Big Apple from the Verrazzano Bridge to the George Washington Bridge. He has a rig set up on his window with a camera mounted on a shelf, which takes a photo by itself every 30 seconds to create the timelapse. DiGiovanna shares two timelapse videos daily on his Instagram account and website, which allows users to explore any day in his four years so far. His cameras even caught the July blackout that plunged New York City into darkness this year. Since his camera amasses over 2,800 photos that take up 36 gigabytes of data a day, DiGiovanna has to be smart with his photo storage. All photos are automatically t...

Andrew Yang to give out $120K to 10 families

HOUSTON, TEXAS – Andrew Yang is trying to attract voters using cold hard cash. Yang will announce at Thursday’s Democratic debate that he plans to give $120,000 to 10 families over the next 12 months out of his campaign’s coffers. The centerpiece of Yang’s campaign is his promise to implement a universal basic income in the U.S. Each American adult over 18 would receive $1,000 a month, which Yang has coined the “freedom dividend.” “Andrew’s putting his money where his mouth is,” Yang’s spokesman Randy Jones told The Post. “You can do a lot of things with the money that your donors give you, we’re very proud that we’re going to give some of it back.” Politico was first to report Yang’s plan. The 10 winners will be selected from individuals who apply for the “freedom divident” via Yang’s website. With Marianne Williamson not making the Houston debate, Yang will be the quirkiest candidate of the 10 appearing Thursday night. A video of Yang crowd surfing recently went viral. Yang, ...

Gary Sanchez can’t escape Yankees’ injury fate

Jaguars will have to wait for new QB

Nick Foles waited patiently for his chance, and now he’ll have to wait some more. The newly minted Jaguars quarterback left the Week 1 matchup against the Chiefs with a broken collarbone, and was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return on Monday. That means his latest gig will be put on hold. ESPN reported Thursday that Foles is “loosely targeting” a Week 11 return from the injury, which should sideline him for about 10 to 12 weeks. Per NFL rules, Foles can’t play until Week 11 at the earliest anyway, as he must remain on IR for at least eight weeks (the Jaguars have a Week 10 bye). That means a heaping dose of Gardner Minshew, the rookie quarterback who had a strong debut. It’s an unfortunate start to Foles’ life as a bonafide starter, as he signed a four-year deal to join the Jaguars in March after dutifully remaining as the Eagles’ backup after leading them to a Super Bowl LII ring. “He’s earned the right to be the starter out there and get the contract he want...
