Yankees’ Joe West anger shows their home-field urgency

In the days leading to the Yankees clinching the AL East title, Aaron Boone was often asked about not letting up after the beer and champagne party ended. Boone delivered the same message Friday, a day after the Yankees locked up their first division title in seven years. “I am confident we will be ready to go with that urgency every day to the end,’’ Boone said before his club dropped a 4-3 decision to the Blue Jays in front of a Yankee Stadium crowd of 45,270. It was obvious from Brett Gardner’s and Boone’s reactions to a call by home plate umpire Joe West in the ninth inning that the AL East title was nice, but not nearly enough for the Yankees to forget about posting the best record in the AL to secure home-field advantage in October. The Yankees trailed by a run with two outs in the ninth, when West called a 3-1 pitch from Ken Giles, which was clearly outside, a strike. An irate Gardner let West know how he felt and eventually flied to center for the second out. “I think I r...

Prince Andrew was a sweaty, ‘hideous’ dancer: Virginia Guiffre

Prince Andrew was a sweaty and “hideous” dancer, according to the Jeffrey Epstein “sex slave” who claims he bedded her at age 17. In her first TV interview on her ordeal at the hands of the financier — and his royal pal the Duke of York — Virginia Guiffre told “Dateline NBC” that the prince bedded her after a night of clubbing and drinking in London in 2001. “He was a hideous dancer.” “He was sweating all over me. I was like, ugh, I need a shower.” Guiffre said she was instructed by Epstein pal Ghislaine Maxwell to do for the prince “what you do for Epstein.” “The abuse went on for a little bit in the bathroom and then it continued in to the bedroom” inside Maxwell’s London townhouse, she said. “He wasn’t rude or anything about it, he said ‘thank you.’” The royal has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “false” and “without foundation,” according to the UK’s Sun, which said Buckingham Palace would not comment on Giuffre’s new interview. Yankees lose ground, maybe Gleyber Torres in loss

With the AL East title drying out after being bathed in beer and champagne during Thursday night’s clubhouse celebration, the Yankees have another race to win: the best record in the American League. Asked about finishing ahead of every other AL team — which would give the Yankees home-field advantage for however long they are alive in the ALDS or ALCS — Aaron Boone didn’t fall back on the Yankees’ initial division title in seven years. “We want to win. So, it certainly gives us a lot to play for in the final days. These games are important and guys are aware of that,’’ Boone said before the Yankees hosted the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. “I am confident we will be ready to go with that urgency every day to the end.’’ Urgency wasn’t enough to overtake the Blue Jays, who hung a 4-3 loss on the Yankees in front of 45,270. The Yankees (100-55) are 9-8 against the 63-91 Blue Jays (63-91) this season and have lost five of the past eight to Toronto. The defeat dropped th...

Marc Staal sees his Rangers reality through Dan Girardi’s exit

Time marches on, and careers come to an end. The reality of that was driven home for Marc Staal this week when something he knew was happening finally did — his good buddy and longtime Rangers teammate Dan Girardi announced his retirement on Friday. “The guys that we came up with, we’re obviously on the back half [of our careers],” Staal said before the Rangers’ 4-2 preseason loss to the Devils on Friday in Newark. “It’s going to be happening a lot more. When I talked to him, we started going back and reminiscing and stuff like that. But for me, in talking to him, I think he’s at peace, he’s happy about it, he seems very excited about it. And I was happy for him. “He finally gets to carry on with the rest of his life and not take slapshots to the ankles anymore. So I’m sure he’s looking forward to that.” Of course, that is the lasting image of Girardi during his 10 seasons with the Rangers, from signing as an undrafted free agent in 2006 until his contract was bought out in the su...

Giants hoping Daniel Jones jump-starts rough season

Baker Mayfield was carrying the weight of unlocking Bud Light fridges across Cleveland and delivering the Browns their first win in nearly two years when he stepped onto the field for the first time as a rookie last season. The brash quarterback quickly took command of the offense, after being called on when Tyrod Taylor got hurt mid-game, and led the Browns to a comeback victory over the Jets that changed their season. Daniel Jones might not win anybody free booze Sunday against the Buccaneers, though he does have the weight of replacing a quarterback like Eli Manning. Still, the Giants are hoping he can provide a similar spark for a season that has started 0-2 for the sixth time in seven years. “There’s a lot of unknown,” said right guard Kevin Zeitler, who was tasked with protecting Mayfield last season. “That being said, we know Daniel’s been working hard ever since he came to training camp and preseason. He’s been working hard, doing good things. Now it’s go time.” “Baker cam...

Cops bust ‘poster child’ of serial subway pervs

The NYPD has busted a serial subway perv who is a “poster child” for prolific transit offenders—renewing the call to ban such recidivists for life. Cops nabbed James Hunt — one of the “Dirty Dozen” repeat offenders who has scores of arrests for subway sex crimes — at the 42nd Street Bryant Park station Thursday for groping a 13-year-old girl who was buying a Metrocard, officials said. Hunt, who allegedly likes to masturbate in front of commuters while sucking his thumb, has racked up at least 78 arrests, including 32 for transit sex crimes, according to sources. Sergeant Christopher O’Connell, commanding officer of the Transit Special Victims Squad, called Hunt the “poster child” for serial subway crimes and said he should be barred from the trains for life. “I believe he should be banned from the subway,” he said. “Regular people get up and go to work, they go to school, to doctors appointments, and he’s out there preying on people. This is all he does.” The grimy groper was pan...

This iconic play was voted as the greatest in NFL history

Immaculate indeed. Pittsburgh running back Franco Harris’ scoop of a deflected pass and subsequent run for the winning touchdown in a 1972 playoff victory against Oakland — forever known as the “Immaculate Reception” — has been voted the greatest play in NFL history. A nationwide panel of 68 media members chose the Immaculate Reception as the top play with 3,270 points and 39 first-place votes. Second in the balloting was Dwight Clark’s TD catch from Joe Montana that lifted San Francisco past Dallas to win the 1981 NFC championship. Harris’ spectacular play not only lifted the Steelers to their first-ever playoff victory, it was the catalyst for the Steel Curtain dynasty that would win four Super Bowls from the 1974 through the 1979 seasons. “That play really represents our teams of the ’70s,” Harris said. With 22 seconds remaining in the first-round matchup, and the ball at the Steelers 40-yard line, quarterback Terry Bradshaw scrambled under heavy pressure on fourth down. He he...

Mets’ Pete Alonso goes yard for 50th homer

Pete Alonso just won’t stop. The Mets’ super rookie hit his 50th home run of the season on Friday, going deep against Reds hurler Sal Romano for a two-run shot in the top of the eighth. The homer makes Alonso just the second rookie to go yard 50 times in a season and the 30th player in league history to hit the milestone. He extended his MLB-leading total — he’s now two ahead of Cincinnati third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who has 48. “That’s crazy,” Alonso told The Post’s Kevin Kernan of being on the cusp of the milestone. “That’s absurd.” Credit: Source link The post Mets’ Pete Alonso goes yard for 50th homer appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https://ift.tt/2M4LzJ5

Jeffrey Epstein reportedly paid doctors to medicate ‘sex slaves’

Victims of multimillionaire pedophile Jeffery Epstein said he paid doctors and psychiatrists to prescribe them tranquilizers and anti-depressants, a report said Friday. Virginia Giuffre, who was recruited by Epstein at the age of 16, told the Miami Herald that doctors prescribed her Xanax for the three years she was abused by him. The financier provided medical care for his “sex slaves,” using his recommended doctors. “There were doctors and psychiatrists and gynecologist visits. There were dentists who whitened our teeth,” she told the newspaper. “There was a doctor who gave me Xanax. What doctor in their right mind, who is supposed to protect their patients, gives girls and young women Xanax?” she added. Sarah Ransome, who was 22 when she was trafficked by Epstein from her native South Africa, said she was taken to a psychiatrist and prescribed Lithium when she was on the verge of a mental breakdown. “You could see it in our faces … We were damaged, we were medicated,” she tol...

Wilson Ramos taking Noah Syndergaard catcher snub in stride

CINCINNATI — Wilson Ramos knows the score. Not only the final results of the games he checks on daily to gauge the Mets’ NL wild-card chances, but also that if Noah Syndergaard has a preference throwing to catchers other than him it would be counterproductive to hold a grudge toward the right-hander. “It’s not like I would be mad with my teammate or that situation,” Ramos told The Post before the Mets faced the Reds on Friday night. “I’m a professional and I love my job and I love what I’m doing, but sometimes you feel good pitching to this guy or that guy. That has happened before.” Ramos was on the bench Wednesday at Colorado as manager Mickey Callaway placated Syndergaard by inserting Rene Rivera as the starting catcher. Syndergaard still struggled, allowing four earned runs over 5 ²/₃ innings in a game the Mets rallied to win in the ninth inning. It closely mirrored Syndergaard’s previous two starts — with Ramos behind the plate — in which he allowed four earned runs over five...

9 Marines at Camp Pendleton charged with human smuggling

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — Nine Marines at California’s Camp Pendleton base have been charged with human smuggling. They include two riflemen who were stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents on July 3 driving from the US-Mexico border with three Mexicans in the back of a BMW. The corps on Friday said the Marines, all lance corporals, were charged with violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice by transporting or conspiring to transport immigrants in the country illegally. Four other Marines who were also detained in the human smuggling investigation weren’t specifically charged with smuggling. They face other charges, including failure to obey orders, drunkenness, endangerment, larceny and perjury. The Marine Corps says none of those charged were involved in the military support mission at the U.S.′ Southwest border. Yankees get a Gleyber Torres injury scare they don’t need

Gleyber Torres is the latest Yankee to have an injury scare. He left their game on Friday against Toronto before the seventh inning, although the Yankees didn’t announce a reason. But the second baseman gave them reason to worry in the top of the fourth, when he made a sliding stop of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s grounder, got up and then slipped, with his right leg giving out on him. Torres stayed on the ground briefly before getting up and being checked out by trainer Steve Donohue and Aaron Boone. He remained in the game and flied to left in the bottom of the inning and struck out in the sixth before leaving before the top of the seventh. DJ LeMahieu moved from third base to second and Gio Urshela entered at third. Torres has been invaluable to the Yankees in his first full season in the majors, with a team-high 38 homers that has helped them survive the loss of so many parts of the lineup. The Yankees now hope Torres isn’t the latest key player to be lost to injury. Credit: So...

Trump hosts Australian prime minister for White House state dinner

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his wife Jennifer to the White House Friday with a pomp-filled military ceremony and a lavish state dinner. More than 4,500 were in attendance for the welcoming ceremony on the White House lawn. The ceremony included Marine band performances of the national anthem of both countries, inspection of the troops and a 19-gun salute. While foreign heads of state traditionally get a 21-gun salute, Australia’s official head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, so Morrison got the salute designated for a head of government. Trump spoke of the “unbreakable bond” between the two countries and honored the “100 years of mateship” that was celebrated last year to mark 100 years since troops from the US and Australia fought alongside each other in World War I. Morrison is just the second world leader to be granted a state visit during the Trump administration after French President Emmanuel Macr...

Four minor leaguers suspended for positive drug tests

NEW YORK — Toronto pitcher Luis Quinones has been suspended for the first 80 games of next season, and San Diego pitcher Elias Batista, Mets catcher Jan Carlos Osorio and Atlanta catcher Jose Camacaro for 72 games each under baseball’s minor league drug program. All four tested positive for performance-enhancing substances, the commissioner’s office said Friday: Quinones for Nandrolone, Camacaro for Boldenone, and Batista and Osorio for Stanozolol. Quinones, a 22-year-old right-hander selected on the 34th round of this year’s amateur draft, was 2-2 with a 2.95 ERA in four starts and eight relief appearances for Bluefield of the Appalachian League and Vancouver of the Northwest League. Batista, a 20-year-old right-hander, was 1-2 with an 8.77 ERA in 15 relief appearances in the Dominican Summer League. The 18-year-old Osorio hit .135 with one homer and 12 RBIs for the DSL Mets1. NFL bans on-field pyrotechnics after Titans’ fire incident

No playing with fire, at least temporarily. The NFL banned all flame effects and pyrotechnics on its fields for at least the short term, as an ongoing investigation into a fire at the Titans’ Nissan Stadium in Week 2 continues. A pre-game pyrotechnic machine caught fire on Sunday during the player introductions as the Titans celebrated retiring the jerseys of ex-players Eddie George and Steve McNair. Stadium staff quickly extinguished the machine, while the corner of the field was evacuated. No one was hurt in the incident. Teams can still use pyrotechnics away from the field, however, including the Vikings, who shoot off fireworks along the roof of U.S. Bank Stadium will continue. There is no timetable for the NFL’s investigation of the Titans’ flames, though its clear the team will have to find a new way to fire up the crowd. Antonio Brown may have just cost himself more millions

Antonio Brown is not only out of a job — he could be out close to $10 million. The Patriots decided Friday to cut to the bombastic wide receiver after just 11 days with the team. When Brown officially signed on Sept. 10, he agreed to a $9 million signing bonus and a guaranteed $1 million base salary. The Patriots were required in the contract to pay him $5 million of the bonus by Monday, Sept. 23, with the remaining $4 million bonus money scheduled to be paid on Jan. 15. According to multiple reports, the Patriots have yet to pay that, and it’s unclear if they will attempt to challenge paying the bonus. If the Patriots were to withhold the payment, Brown could file a grievance against the club. It’s possible the Patriots could also attempt to hold back paying Brown the rest of the base salary due to language in his contract. Under the Salary Guarantee section, if Brown were to take “any action that materially undermines the public’s respect for, or is materially critical of, the ...

Gun-toting turnstile jumper once threatened to shoot cops

The Bronx turnstile jumper who cops did not initially realize was packing heat — despite the gun butt clearly protruding from his waistband in video of his arrest — has nearly a dozen prior busts on his record, including one for allegedly threatening to shoot NYPD “mother–kers,” police sources said Friday. “I get my gun license next month and I swear to God, watch what happens when I get my gun license next month. Y’all mother–kers think terrorism ain’t alive,” Billy Walters, 37, barked at police when he was nabbed on June 7 in Manhattan, sources said. Sources say during that incident Walters, who is homeless, was in front of a Citibank on West 34th Street and 7th Avenue when he interfered with police when a pal was getting a summons. Walters took a swing at officers when he was going to be placed under arrest and that’s when he made the threats, the sources said. In that case, he was hit with a slew of charges, including menacing and making a terroristic threat. In another inst...
