HARTFORD, Conn. — A butcher shop employee who cut the throat of a runaway calf in a Home Depot parking lot has been charged with animal cruelty, police said Friday. Badr Musaed, 39, turned himself in Thursday to face the felony charge, authorities said. He was released after posting a $10,000 bond. The young cow broke out of the Saba Live Poultry store in Bloomfield on July 13 and ran behind the Home Depot store across the street. The animal eluded several people who tried to corral it before employees from the halal butcher shop wrestled it to the ground and Musaed cut its throat. At the time, he was cited for public disturbance. Police decided to pursue the more serious charge after consulting with agriculture officials, said Lt. Christina Benvenuto, a spokeswoman for Bloomfield police. She said the investigation included a review of regulations for halal slaughter, in which animals are killed in accordance with Islamic dietary laws. It was not immediately clear whether Musaed ...

While the Jets are waiting for their newest offensive lineman to take the field, they watched another key one limp off the field Friday, when left tackle Kelvin Beachum exited practice early with a right ankle injury. Beachum was able to walk to the locker room, a good sign, but the Jets are still going to have him go through tests to see how serious the injury is. “I don’t think it’s going to be too long,” coach Adam Gase said. “We’re just going through our normal deal, just making sure everything’s all right.” The Jets made a splash this week by signing center Ryan Kalil to bolster their line. LOS ANGELES — Three suspects were arrested Friday in the fatal shooting of an off-duty Los Angeles police officer, officials said. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti described those arrested as the “primary suspects responsible for the murder of Officer Juan Diaz” and said they were taken into custody in the cities of Temecula and Murietta in Riverside County. “We will always bring to justice anybody who would not only murder a police officer but anybody who would take the life of any Angeleno,” Garcetti said. Francisco Talamantes, 23; Cristian Facundo, 20 and Ashlynn Smith,18, all of Temecula, were booked on suspicion of murder and held without bail, police said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether they had obtained lawyers. LOS ANGELES — Ed Sheeran’s Divide Tour is one for the record books. Pollstar confirms the 28-year-old British singer‘s tour will set the all-time highest-grossing tour record with Friday’s show in Hannover, Germany. Pollstar forecasts the total gross to this point of $736.7 million will top the previous record of $735.4 million set by U2 in 2011. In a statement, Sheeran calls it “amazing.” The Divide Tour launched on Mar. 16, 2017 and is due to end on Aug. 26. That’s 893 days compared to the 760 days U2 spent on the road. Sheeran’s tour topped U2’s attendance record of 7.3 million on May 24 in France with a total attendance of 7,315,970. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A Tennessee mother accused of contributing to the deaths of her newborn twins by using drugs will not be prosecuted. News outlets report that charges against 29-year-old Tiffany Marie Roberts were dropped Thursday in a Chattanooga courtroom. Hamilton County district attorney’s office spokesman Bruce Garner says the charges were dismissed because the medical examiner said the twins’ cause of death “could not be linked solely with Roberts’ alleged drug abuse.” Roberts gave birth to twins in July at 23 weeks pregnant. Both infants died two days later. After the deaths, Roberts had been charged with first degree murder, aggravated child abuse or neglect and viable fetus as a victim. The hospital listed the twins’ cause of death as pulmonary hemorrhage. An official cause of death hasn’t been determined. SALISBURY, N.C — The adoptive mother of a North Carolina teen who was missing for years before her body was found in South Carolina has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and other charges. WCCB reports Rowan County District Attorney Brandy Cook said Casey Parsons was sentenced to life in prison on Friday after also pleading guilty to felony counts of child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, concealment of death and obstruction of justice in Rowan County Superior Court. Her husband, Sandy Parsons, remains jailed pending trial on the same charges. The two were charged in the death of Erica Parsons, who was reported missing in July 2013. She had last been seen alive in 2011, when she was 13. In 2016, Sandy Parsons led authorities to Erica’s body in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. CBS acting CEO Joe Ianniello would be offered a job overseeing all of the combined network’s branded assets, the Wall Street Journal reported. The US labor force grew to a new high of 163.4 million last month — a record that was overshadowed Friday by rising trade tensions. The Labor Department Friday reported that 164,000 non-farm jobs were added to the economy in July — a bump that was aided by 370,000 new workers entering the labor force. Unemployment continues to stand at 3.7 percent, near a 50-year low, while wages ticked upward 3.2 percent over the last year. The Labor Department figures signal a healthy but not overheating economy and provides some validation for the Federal Reserve’s decision to cut interest rates earlier this week, experts said. ENCINITAS, Calif. — One person is dead and others are injured after a cliff collapsed onto a Southern California beach. The city of Encinitas said Friday that the bluff gave way about 3 p.m. in the suburb north of San Diego. The area is highly popular with local residents and vacationers. The beach was filled with people at the time of the collapse. A KNSD-TV helicopter captured footage of beach chairs, towels, surf boards and beach toys strewn about the sand. Suburbs north of San Diego have contended with rising water levels in the Pacific Ocean, pressuring bluffs along the coast. Many bluffs are fortified to prevent multimillion-dollar homes from falling into the sea. It was unclear how many were injured and how seriously. KNSD reported two injured.
