Queens NYPD commander calls in stolen car during morning run

A Queens police precinct commander proved Saturday morning that New York’s Finest are never off the job — by busting a trio of alleged car thieves during a day-off jog. Capt. John Hall, 42, the top cop at the 111 Precinct in Bayside, was on a morning run along Joe Michael’s Mile near the Bayside Marina when he noticed something seemed off about a white Mercedes SUV in his path. It was the exact same make and model as a car reported stolen within his precinct. “I gave it a look, and then I remembered the first three letters of the plate matched,” Hall said. “At that point I rightfully guessed that I had a stolen car parked there.” Another Mercedes SUV was parked right next to it — and between the two vehicles, three men were sleeping inside, Hall said. The quick-thinking cop decided to run another 50 feet — enough of a distance away from the snoozing suspects — before he phoned in the sighting to his precinct. Officers showed up and took the trio into custody. It turned out that t...

Liberal Brits want to oust the Queen: poll

God, don’t save the Queen! That’s apparently the view of a majority of Britain’s Labour Party members. Only 29% of party members polled believe in keeping the British monarchy, the Sunday Times of London reported. And only one in five would be “happy” or “proud” to sing the national anthem, “God Save the Queen.” The poll of 1,100 Labour Party members was commissioned by Mainstream, a new campaign against political extremism founded by a member of Parliament who quit the party in February. It also found that 69% support a general strike to overthrow the Conservative government, and 70% would like the country to get rid of its nuclear weapons. Even more shocking in a country that’s in the midst of leaving the European Union in part because of immigration issues, almost half of the poll’s respondents agreed that nations “should remove borders and people should decide where they want to live.” Only 23% of the party members agreed that it has a serious problem with anti-Semitism, des...

Chemistry can help Nets top expectations

Vegas is betting on Brooklyn to struggle, finishing barely over .500. Some advanced analytics say they’ll be a losing team. Spencer Dinwiddie? He’s talking title contention, no matter when injured star Kevin Durant comes back — and more and more the word around NBA circles is that could be this season. The Nets hosted a back-to-school party at Barclays Center on Saturday for about 100 kids from MS 354, and one asked Dinwiddie if he felt his much-improved team would bring home an NBA title. “He asked if I think the Brooklyn Nets will win a championship. Now, listen here: I don’t make guarantees. But of course I do. … KD is the best player in the league, right?” Dinwiddie said, giving Durant that title over the likes of LeBron James or reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. Then later, in a quiet moment after the event, he added to The Post, “It has a chance to be a very, very special season.” Just how special depends on how quickly they jell. Sure, they’ve added Durant, Kyrie Irving ...

What is this DMV mystery fee?

Dear John: I recently renewed my car registration online. I received the renewal, which was for two years, and a listing of the charges. The annual fee for my car is $33.25, which came to $66.50 for the two years. The total charges, which are listed as “additional fees and charges” without explanation were $136.50 — an extra $70 over the registration fee. I went to the local DMV office to inquire about this. One worker said she didn’t know, and a supervisor said she wasn’t sure but it must be taxes. But she didn’t know what taxes. I hope you can give me a better explanation for these extra fees. D.M. Dear D.M.: First, there’s the fee for living in upstate New York rather than in the big city. And then there’s the fee because they knew you would ask about the extra fee. And there’s a tax because they knew you’d reach out to this column. There’s also the convenience fee for doing it online, which is not refundable just because you had to go to the DMV to ask about the online fees....

Antonio Brown still has interest from NFL teams

Antonio Brown isn’t giving up on an playing again this season — he just may have to wait. The wide receiver’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN he has had communications with “a few teams that are interested” in Brown, who was cut by the Patriots on Friday after he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women and threatening texts he allegedly sent to one of the accusers came to light. Rosenhaus added that the teams wanted information regarding Brown’s “legal situation and the NFL investigation.” The report also stated that while there are interested teams, a deal for the free-agent receiver is unlikely happen until the NFL’s investigation comes to a conclusion, according to sources. Brown has denied all of the allegations. The threatening messages finally pushed Patriots owner Robert Kraft to cut ties with Brown, who played just one game for his team. In the texts, Brown allegedly accuses the woman of trying to extort money from him. “Let’s lok[sic] up her background histor...

Student debtors being duped by slick Wall Street loan sharks

Financial sharks are circling distressed student loan borrowers in New York. As defaults hit a record, many local students, anxious for financial relief from their sky-high college loans — now totaling over $1.5 trillion nationwide — are turning to slick Wall Street con artists who promise to lower repayments, and to facilitate loan forgiveness. But it’s a scam, say investigators. “Consumers struggling with debt are prime targets for scammers looking to take advantage of them,” said Claire Rosenzweig, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau for metropolitan New York, announcing details last week of a string of recent scams reported by local student loan borrowers. One borrower, who didn’t want her name disclosed, said she was called in April by a company known as National Student Loans stating she “qualified” for loan forgiveness, which is a rarity for most borrowers. The borrower said she was ultimately duped for $826. “They knew my Social Security number, the names of m...

Maspeth cheating expose opens floodgates for other examples of academic fraud

Last Sunday, The Post exposed rampant cheating at Maspeth High School in Queens. The bombshell report triggered a Queens DA probe and reactions from educators and students across the city, many of whom claim the same academic fraud occurs at their schools. “Have I been told in a staff meeting, by a Superintendent who is now an Executive Superintendent, that ‘You’d better not fail any of those children?’ Absolutely. Did she mean pass kids who had terrible attendance and hadn’t mastered the curriculum? Absolutely. Did she mean to go as far as Maspeth? No, but when you send that kind of message, here’s what happens.” — Jane Roth, a New Jersey-based teacher, on social media “Some kids are like, ‘Why are you upset? They’re helping you out.’ They’re not helping me, they’re doing it for their own image. They’re trying to save their own ass. I’m not an idiot.” — current Maspeth HS student on social media “Can someone name a school not doing this type of so-called cheating? This is what th...

Nala the service dog makes friends with Donald Duck

Cue the oohs and awws. This medical service dog made friends with Donald Duck at Disney World in Orlando in a heartwarming video shared online. Two-year-old Nala serves at the theme park aiding people with autism, according to her @helperdognala Instagram page. In the clip, Nala rests her head on Donald Duck’s round tummy. She’s so comfortable that she even closes her eyes to have a moment with her new feathered friend. Donald seemed equally taken with Nala. Although he doesn’t speak in the clip, he mimes shedding tears as Nala rests on his lap. On Instagram, Nala can be seen with other Disney characters including Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” Caribbean pirate Jack Sparrow and Rapunzel from “Tangled.” Credit: Source link The post Nala the service dog makes friends with Donald Duck appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https://ift.tt/30FTIci

Rangers wrangle hundreds of critters in NYC parks

It’s an urban jungle out there. Park rangers handled 748 sick, misplaced or dead animals spotted in city parks — ranging from 451 raccoons to four coyotes to one Dutch blue love bird, according to city data from May 2, 2018, to June 12, 2019. The critters range from the everyday city pigeons and domestic dogs and cats to an alligator snapping turtle in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and a harbor seal found dead on Staten Island. Central Park logged the most wildlife reports, with 274 birds, turtles and raccoons — many of which suffered from the canine distemper virus that makes them act like zombies. Across the city, 155 critters were considered healthy, 451 unhealthy or injured and 104 dead on arrival. Conditions were not known for all. The urban park rangers respond to calls from the public, park employees or others who have spotted an animal that looks sick or out of place. Sometimes the animal has wandered away by the time they arrive — 232 animal reports were deemed “unfoun...

Man found alive on roof after jumping from adjacent building

A 26-year-old man was in critical condition after he was found on a Lower East Side roof — after apparently falling or jumping from an adjacent building Saturday morning, police said. The man was found by neighbors who heard him moaning on the roof at 161 Stanton St., witnesses said. “His face was covered in blood,” said one witness. The man lives at an adjacent building on Clinton Street, police said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital. De Blasio stays mum about The Post’s cheeky campaign ‘obit’ cover

Bill de Blasio got back to being a full-time mayor on Saturday, spending the day attending civic functions and making zero public mention of his failed presidential bid — or The Post’s cheeky front page “obituary” of his doomed campaign. Twitter, however, had much to say about the Page One diss, in which the paper pronounced the ill-fated campaign “dead of ego-induced psychosis.” “Well written, singed with truth my compliments to the chef,” tweeted @Richard90618832 . “One of the many reasons why I love the NY Post,” gushed CNBC “Fast Money” co-host Tim Seymour . De Blasio did get to enjoy a “leave the campaign, take the canolis” moment at the Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy, where he presided over a meatball-eating contest. The event may have seemed small potatoes after his failure to make White House history — but Hizzoner seemed game. Residents claim homeless have overrun ritzy Lower Manhattan neighborhoods

It’s the Village of the damned. Bums are overrunning the West Village and Chelsea, according to terrified residents who are circulating a petition to remedy the crisis since police and lawmakers are unable or unwilling to help. Longtime denizens say the problem has never been worse, with vagrants shooting up drugs and relieving and even pleasuring themselves in full view. “I’ve been here forever, and I’ve traveled all over the world, and I’m scared in Chelsea,” said one local, who like several interviewed by The Post was too shaken to provide her name. “The last three years, it’s been building, and this summer it hit its pinnacle. It’s out of control.” The Chelsea woman said she won’t leave her apartment without Mace and a Kevlar vest. Lil Allen launched the petition late last month, calling on Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Mayor de Blasio to address the “alarming increase” in the number of drug addicts and vagrants in the area. The petition, posted on the website iPetition...
