Tony Tovar told a local NBC affiliate that he had the feeling the suspect who pointed a gun at him during the robbery wasn’t going to hurt him, so he kept on puffing his smoke while the gunman emptied the cash register at the bar in the South City section of St. Louis. “He just wanted drug money,” Tovar said of the robber who stuck up Behrmann’s bar on Wednesday night. SPOKANE, Wash. — A misdemeanor assault charge against former Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien has been dropped. A judge in Washington state on Friday dismissed the fourth-degree assault charge involving Rypien’s wife, KREM-TV reported. A report by Spokane Officer Todd Brownlee said Rypien acknowledged hitting her on June 30. The former Washington Redskins quarterback told police that she covered his eyes as he drove and she got the wind knocked out of her after he pushed her hands away. Police found her in the grass clutching her stomach and struggling to breathe. “Did you hit her?” Brownlee asked Mark Rypien, according to the police report. “Yes, I did,” he replied. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sirhan Sirhan, imprisoned for more than 50 years for the 1968 assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was hospitalized Friday after being stabbed by a fellow inmate at a San Diego prison. A statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said the stabbing occurred Friday afternoon at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego. “Officers responded quickly, and found an inmate with stab wound injuries. He was transported to an outside hospital for medical care, and is currently in stable condition,” the statement said. The statement did not name Sirhan, but a government source with direct knowledge confirmed to The Associated Press that he was the victim. The Giants are determined that the rookie quarterback continue to develop, even if he does not play at all behind starter Eli Manning. The plan set up by coach Pat Shurmur is this: Manning gets the bulk of the reps in practice, with Jones watching and learning via mental reps. Before and after practice and during the special teams periods, Jones works on the side, executing all the offensive plays he would need to run in a game. “On his own time, under our direction, we get him as ready as we can,’’ Shurmur said Friday. “That’s just the way this works, and we’re confident that he’s put himself in position to go in and execute at a high level, so that’s really how that works. DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — A tourist has died while visiting Death Valley National Park amid blazing summer heat. The National Park Service says the visitor was reported to be non-responsive at 6 p.m. Tuesday and she died before emergency responders arrived at the location south of Badwater. Her name wasn’t released. The cause of death is being investigated by Inyo County authorities, but the Park Service notes Death Valley has been having temperatures above 120 degrees. It was the second death in three days in the Mojave Desert park, where two of the most common reasons for emergency responses are single-vehicle accidents and heat illnesses. Summer visitors are urged to drink at least one gallon of water per day and watch for trouble signs including dizziness, nausea and headaches. Djokovic was getting ready to serve when he stopped – catching his toss on the way down – before walking over to the fence to chat with a confront a fan, who may have said something he didn’t like. A 22-year-old man fell to his death while hiking on an overlook trail in one of Ohio’s most popular state parks, officials said Friday. Alexander Colson, of Franklin County, OH, was exploring an area near Old Man’s Cave in Hocking Hills State Park when the fatal accident happened, according to the Department of Natural Resources. He was on the overlook trail — with his back facing towards the cliff’s edge — when he took a step backward and lost his footing, officials said. Colson plunged 75 feet to the ground below, where he was found by first responders. They rushed him to a local hospital, but he could not be saved. It was unclear if Colson was by himself at the time. Hocking Hills is considered the third most popular state park in Ohio, according to Natural Resources officials. Colson is now the second hiker to die in the area this summer. Shares of cosmetics chain Ulta Beauty plummeted close to 30 percent Friday after it said sales are slowing. Comparable sales in the second quarter grew 6.2 percent, below expectations for growth of 6.7 percent. Ulta, which operates about 1,200 stores, also slashed its growth forecast for the year to 4 percent to 6 percent, down from 6 percent to 7 percent. A 14-year-old boy from Florida is behind bars for allegedly murdering a 3-year-old girl that he was babysitting. Jonathan Godwin, of Jacksonville, is accused of repeatedly hitting the girl in her chest, back, legs and head with his fist and a belt in an attempt to get her to stop crying. He had been “left in charge to babysit” her and two other small children on Aug. 16, according to police . “While watching the victim for several hours, [Godwin] became annoyed with the victim for crying and repeatedly hit her,” cops said in a press release Friday. “The victim was found unresponsive by [Godwin’s] mother, and was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.” An investigation later revealed that Godwin, who was arrested Friday, had a history of “abusing and burning another small child,” according to police. Dorian strengthened into an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane Friday night — but meteorologists say there’s a chance it will bank north at the last minute, hugging Florida’s coast and delivering only a glancing blow to the state instead of making landfall. “There is hope,” Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters told The Associated Press. The National Hurricane Center said that some of its more reliable computer models are predicting a northward turn. Still, other models are predicting a direct hit somewhere around Fort Pierce, some 70 miles north of Mar-a-Lago, late Monday or early Tuesday. I don’t know why you’re freaking out.” That’s what a now-former 911 operator told an Arkansas woman right before she drowned inside of her car last week, according to newly-released audio. Debbie Stevens, 47, of Fort Smith, had gotten trapped by floodwaters inside of an apartment complex parking lot and frantically called police for help. Audio recordings of her conversation with the emergency operator, Donna Reneau, were released Thursday by authorities. “Please help me. I don’t wanna die,” Stevens can be heard saying as water rushes into her vehicle. “You’re not going to die — hold on for a minute,” Reneau tells her. “Well I need um, I’m scared. I’m sorry,” Stevens says. “I understand that you’re scared but there’s nothing I can do sitting in a chair so you’re going to have to hold on and I’m going to send you somebody, OK?” Reneau replies.
