What to watch this Labor Day 2019

Labor Day is here at last —  and not everyone has a vacation planned. There’s something to be said for kicking back in front of your TV to relax and do nothing. But with over 500 shows on the air, your options are overwhelming. Here’s a guide for essential viewing.

BROADCAST

“The Secret Lives of Cheerleaders”
Lifetime, 8 p.m.

In the mood for a pulpy Lifetime movie? Good news, Denise Richards stars in the latest. The story follows Ava (Savannah May), a transfer student who’s pushed by her mother Candice (Richards) to try out for her school’s cheerleading squad. Of course all is not what it seems, and sinister machinations from classmates ensue.

“The Love Bug”
TCM, 9:45 p.m.

Revisit this 1968 classic about the original sentient car named Herbie. Starring Dean Jones as Herbie’s driver Jim Douglas and Michele Lee as Jim’s paramour Carole Bennett, it’s a classic adventure tale perfect for the end of summer.

“Strange World”
Travel, 11 p.m.

This new Travel Channel series investigates urban legends and conspiracy theories. In tonight’s episode “Little Bastard,” host Christopher Garetano investigates the mystery behind the supposedly cursed car that vanished after it killed James Dean.

STREAMING

“The Big Sick”
Amazon Prime

If you missed Silicon Valley star Kumail Nanjiani’s 2017 fictional chronicle of his real-life love story, which he stars in and co-wrote with wife Emily V. Gordon, catch it now. It’s got pathos — it follows a man who bonds with his girlfriend’s parents after she inexplicably falls into a coma, which really happened to Gordon — but it’s full of heart with a family message and a happy ending, both in the film and in real life.

“Derry Girls”
Netflix

Catch up on the comedy sensation everyone’s been talking about. A sitcom full of selfish yet lovable people, think “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” if the characters were teen girls in 1990s Derry, Ireland. You might need to turn on the subtitles to understand the Irish accents, but it’s hilarious, full of heart, and you can binge the whole thing in a day — episodes are a half-hour, and there’s only six in each of the two seasons. It’s also a history lesson if you don’t know much about the Troubles.

“The Good Place”
Netflix

Season 3 of the NBC afterlife comedy starring Ted Danson and Kristin Bell just hit Netflix. Ahead of the premiere of the fourth and final season (Sept. 26, NBC) catch up on the show everyone keeps quoting. It’s full of laughs, but since it comes from Michael Schur (“Parks and Recreation,”), it also has twists, turns and a surprising amount of ethical dilemmas that make you think.

“Rocky”
Hulu

Even if you’ve followed the recent “Creed” movies, it’s probably been a while since you’ve seen the original “Rocky.” Sylvester Stallone’s breakout role is currently on Hulu — watch the pop-culture icon’s humble beginnings and spend the rest of the day with the theme song stuck in your head.

“To Catch a Thief”
Amazon Prime

The Alfred Hitchcock classic starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly is currently available on Amazon Prime. Revisit the story of retired jewel thief John “The Cat” Robie (Grant) as he’s ensnared in a world of glitz and glam — or watch it for the very first time.

Review: Animated ‘Chance’ takes on dog fighting with overly earnest yet well-intended spirit

The CG animated feature “Chance” is a well-intended but heavy-handed denunciation of the barbaric blood sport of dog fighting. The title character (voiced by Will Canon) is a dreamer of a pit bull, who believes in a canine god and a peaceful place where “Hatonas” (dogs) can live idyllic lives.... from latimes.com - Los Angeles Times http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-mini-chance-review-20190403-story.html>

Convicted rapist killer strikes again after getting out of jail

A convicted rapist killer who strangled a teen in 1981 and was suspected of cutting out the eyes out of an earlier victim has been arrested on a new rape charge, six years after he got out of jail. Christopher “Crazy Chris” Aniades, 62, is being held on an attempted forcible rape charge after he allegedly attacked the victim, according to the city Department of Correction. He’s being held at the Eric. M Taylor Center in Queens on first degree attempted rape, according to the city Department of Correction website. His arrest on Aug. 2 was based on a warrant issued by the state’s Division of Parole. The NYPD and the state DOC said they couldn’t provide details on Aniades’ latest offense. Aniades, who was released on Aug. 20, 2013 after spending more than 30 years in jail, became a poster boy of the violent 1980s in New York, when homicides routinely reached 2,000 a year. He was sentenced to 25-years to life for abducting, raping and killing 19-year-old Doreen Vitale on Oct. 15 198...
