Andrew Luck lessons Jets must learn for Sam Darnold’s sake

A few hours before the Jets kicked off their preseason game with the Saints on Saturday night, general manager Joe Douglas was speaking to reporters in a room adjacent to the team’s locker room. “It’s always going to be a point of emphasis for us,” Douglas said just before exiting the room. The “It” in this instance was Douglas’ offensive line. A few hours later when the news broke that Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was retiring, I thought about what Douglas said. It better be true … for Sam Darnold’s sake. Luck’s early retirement came after years of injuries took their toll on him. Some of those injuries were a direct result of the Colts failing to get the proper offensive line in front of him until last year. Luck took a pounding for most of his career and it led to him ending that career before he even turned 30. A franchise quarterback is the most precious commodity in sports. Without it, NFL teams seem to chase their tails every year. But just having a franchise quarterback...

Dog found on side of road with muzzle taped shut, throat slashed

“We will not tolerate these actions…Not now or ever.” That’s the message cops in Butler County, Ohio, want people to hear after a local resident found a dog on the side of the road with her mouth duct-taped shut and her throat slashed. “This is appalling,” said local sheriff Richard Jones in a statement. “Words cannot describe the disgust I’m feeling right now,” he added. “We will work diligently to find who did this and seek justice.” Someone from Madison Township, OH, found the injured pup — dubbed Dani — on Aug. 17 and brought her to a local veterinarian, according to officials. A chip was located inside the dog and used to trace its ownership to a shelter in Cincinnati called HART Rescue. The shelter told cops that they “adopted the canine out” in 2011. “We will not tolerate these actions,” wrote Sheriff Jones in a tweet on Friday. “Period. not now or ever.” Authorities provided an update on Dani’s condition Saturday, saying the pooch was “doing well.” “The Sheriff loves ...

Dressbarn and Ann Taylor owner not returning lenders’ calls

A group of lenders owed more than $1.4 billion by Dressbarn’s owner — Ascena Retail Group — is getting nervous that it won’t get its money back, The Post has learned. Mahwah, NJ-based Ascena, which also owns Ann Taylor, Loft, Lane Bryant and tween retailer Justice, has not returned the lenders’ calls and e-mails for at least a month, raising concerns about whether the publicly traded company is preparing to file for bankruptcy protection, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Nonetheless, no payments have been missed by Ascena. “It’s been radio silence from Ascena and the lenders are just spooked at this point,” the source said. The company is in the midst of shutting down 57-year-old Dressbarn. As The Post exclusively reported on July 2, the company has been trying to shutter the chain by demanding landlords for Dressbarn’s 650 stores release them of their lease obligations — or face off against Dressbarn in bankruptcy court. If landords balk, however, Dressbarn ...

Joe Arpaio wants to be sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona again

Joe Arpaio is looking to get back in the saddle again as the former Arizona sheriff said Sunday that he plans to run for the position he lost in 2016. The former Maricopa County sheriff, who was pardoned last year by President Trump for a federal contempt-of-court conviction, pledged to enforce his tough on crime polices in a statement. “Watch out world! We are back!” Arpaio said. “I will continue to stand and fight to do the right thing for Arizona and America, and will never surrender. Those who break the law will have to deal with this Sheriff.” Arpaio is known for housing immigrants in outdoor tents in the 100-degrees-plus temperatures of the Phoenix area. The 87-year-old man was charged with contempt of court in 2016 for having ignored a federal judge’s order to stop arresting immigrants solely on suspicion that they were in the country illegally. Arpaio was convicted in July 2017 and pardoned the next month. Trump said he admired Arpaio’s work “protecting the public from t...

Man threatened to shoot up Florida Hilton in online reviews: cops

A Texas man allegedly threatened to shoot up a Florida Hilton hotel in a scathing online review, police said. Joseph Lee McKinney, 40, was arrested Saturday as he stepped off a cruise ship at Port Canaveral, Fla., after cops linked at least one menacing missive to him, local outlet Space Coast Daily reported. “The review contained threatening language that made reference to an ‘active shooter style’ event at the hotel,” said Cocoa Beach Police Sgt. Manny Hernandez. Hilton employees on Friday received the electronic guest review, where McKinney expressed dissatisfaction with a recent stay and threatened violence, police said. He was charged with written threats to kill, do bodily injury or conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism. He is being held in Brevard County Jail on $25,000 bond. “Let this arrest send a message that we have zero tolerance for any threat of mass violence,” said Cocoa Beach Police Chief Scott Rosenfeld in a statement. “The safety of our community is pa...

Sanders says McConnell lacks ‘the guts’ for national issues

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Sunday branded Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as an obstructionist for blocking Democratic efforts to reduce gun violence, bolster election security and raise the federal minimum wage. In a speech to cheering supporters in Louisville, Sanders challenged McConnell in his home state to “have the guts” to debate those bills. Accusing McConnell of defending the interests of wealthy campaign donors, Sanders also challenged his Kentucky colleague to “listen to the pain” of his constituents struggling to get by on low-wage jobs. By lashing out at McConnell, the Vermont senator took aim at the most powerful Republican in Congress and the second biggest target for national Democrats, behind President Donald Trump. The president easily carried Kentucky in 2016 and remains popular in the state. But in Sanders’ hard-hitting speech, Trump briefly took a back seat to the longtime Kentucky senator. “Sen. McConnell, it ...

Massachusetts woman dies from rare EEE virus, 3 others infected

At least four people in Massachusetts have contracted the rare Eastern equine encephalitis virus, including one woman who died, officials and family members said Sunday. Laurie Sylvia, a 59-year-old realtor, contracted the disease, which is spread by mosquitoes, and began to feel sick on Monday before passing away on Saturday, her husband of 40 years, Robert Sylvia Jr., told NBC 10. Their daughter, Jen Sylvia, mourned her “best friend” in a Facebook post on Sunday, writing that her mother “brought light and joy to everyone she came across.” “She was such a beautiful soul. I don’t know where to go from here,” the grief-stricken daughter wrote. “I just don’t understand how such a beautiful person could be taken from me so soon,” she continued. “My heart hurts beyond words.” The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said their lab had confirmed a fourth case of EEE this year in a woman over 50 from southern Bristol County. The agency didn’t identify the woman, or announce her ...

Nets lock up Caris LeVert with new deal on his birthday

Add Caris LeVert to the list of Nets getting paid this summer. After the franchise’s free-agent spending spree on Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan, the team agreed to a three-year $52.5 million contract extension with LeVert on Sunday night, according to ESPN. The deal, which LeVert confirmed with a Twitter video, comes on the homegrown star’s 25th birthday. “Brooklyn is where I’ve always wanted to be,” he said in the video. “To the city and all of my teammates, you’ve believed in me since day one. … This is where I started my career and where I want to continue it.” LeVert averaged 13.7 points, 3.9 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 40 games last season. Ace chefs upping their game for US Open crowds in Queens

Tennis champs like Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal aren’t the only draws at the US Open tennis tournament, which kicks off Monday in Queens. An unprecedented number of culinary chefs are lining up to feed the roughly 700,000 fans who are expected to attend, sources said. Newcomers to the annual tennis event in Forest Hills include tapas king José Andrés, “Top Chef” judge Tom Colicchio of Gramercy Tavern, and Jacques Torres, known for his eponymous chocolatier. They will join veteran US Open headliners like chef David Burke, who this year has revamped a US Open staple, Mojito, which is now called Mojito by David Burke. It has been transformed into a new Cuban-Asian-American fusion hotspot. “We have refreshed it,” Burke said of the venue, whose menu is inspired by Ventanas, Burke’s restaurant in Fort Lee, NJ, with partner Alex Duran. Burke also will bring back his Fish Shack stand at the Grandstand Food Village, which is the US Open’s concession stand. Burke’s Upper East Side rest...

CNN’s April Ryan finally breaks silence on bodyguard incident

CNN political analyst April Ryan has broken her silence about the incident involving her bodyguard and a New Jersey journalist — who was forcibly removed from an event she was speaking at earlier this month. “Anyone who knows me knows that I’m the first person who wants to get a story out,” Ryan said during an interview on Brian Stelter’s “Reliable Sources” Sunday morning. “The only reason I’ve been quiet is because a threat of lawsuit,” she explained. “But here’s the thing: This is not about suppressing the press. My body of work stands for me.” Asked if she had ordered her bodyguard, Joel Morris — who has since been fired — to physically remove New Brunswick Today editor Charlie Kratovil from the Aug. 3 New Jersey Parent Summit at The Heldrich Hotel, Ryan simply said: “No.” “I did not order anyone to do anything,” she told Stelter, who mentioned a video showing Ryan speaking to Morris right before he removes Kratovil. “At that moment, what you saw was my then-bodyguard, who was...

‘Bagel Boss’ gets cuffed, taken to hospital for psych eval

Another day, another “Bagel Boss” beef. Long Island resident Chris Morgan aka the “Bagel Boss” guy was caught on camera going berserk on some people at the Bay Shore Marina on Sunday, prompting cops to step in and put the pint-sized terror in handcuffs — and then the hospital — for a psych evaluation. “We’re sick of your nonsense,” a person can be heard telling Morgan as Suffolk County officers take him into custody. The 5-foot-tall bagel store brawler was allegedly attacking people and “causing a disturbance” at the Bay Shore Marina — swinging a small bat and shouting, cops said. Officers on patrol spotted him around 5:45 p.m. and quickly took him down. “Get on the ground!” a cop can be heard telling Morgan on cellphone video, which was posted on Facebook by a local resident who witnessed the mayhem. Additional footage shows Morgan — who went viral last month following a meltdown at a Long Island Bagel Boss — screaming at someone about being sprayed in the eyes with something. ...

NASA’s Anne McClain denies space crime claim amid divorce battle

Decorated NASA astronaut Anne McClain has denied she stole her estranged wife’s identity while on a mission as officials investigate her for what may be the first crime committed in space. “There’s unequivocally no truth to these claims,” McClain said Saturday on Twitter . “We’ve been going through a painful, personal separation that’s now unfortunately in the media.” McClain’s legal drama made headlines Friday after her wife, Summer Worden, filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, claiming the astronaut illegally accessed her bank account during a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station, the New York Times reported. The pair has been locked in a bitter divorce since 2018 as they feud over custody of Worden’s 6-year-old son, whom the astronaut helped raise before they separated, according to the paper. After their split, Worden claims McLain repeatedly attempted to probe into her financial situation — which led her to ask her bank to check whether her ...

Jets downplaying major conundrum headed their way

It was a final dress rehearsal, except with multiple stand-ins. The Jets first-team offense took the field together for the final time Saturday night before the games count for real in two weeks, but it wasn’t the true first team. Running back Le’Veon Bell, the big offseason addition, wasn’t out there. Neither was starting center Ryan Kalil. Or right guard Brian Winters or left guard Kelechi Osemele. The entire unit, in fact, hasn’t been together the entire preseason. But the Jets aren’t concerned. Why? “Because of the way those guys operate in meetings and what they do on the practice field. The way they’re practicing, it’s intense,” coach Adam Gase said. “They’re going game speed. I know it’s different because when you go against another team, a different defense, you can’t simulate that in practice. When you go against our defense and they’re doing what they do, we have a feel for that.” Still, it will be interesting to see how this group performs once the season begins, Sept....
