It was a dream come true for Giants RB Jon Hilliman

It has been made clear star running back Saquon Barkley won’t see the field during the Giants’ preseason schedule and Wayne Gallman was nursing an ankle injury, leaving the bulk of the rushing game up to Rod Smith and Paul Perkins on Friday night. But don’t count out Jon Hilliman, who was the surprise leader of the backfield with 16 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown in the Giants’ 32-13 rout of the Bears at MetLife Stadium. “It’s kind of surreal, I grew up a Giants fan, so I vividly remember skipping school and going to the Giants parade when they won the Super Bowl and things like that,” Hilliman, an undrafted running back out of Rutgers, said following the victory. “So, being able to score with the Giants’ logo on my helmet, it hasn’t really hit me yet. I hope it doesn’t hit me so I just continue to build and keep going. But definitely a special moment.” Hilliman’s touchdown came in the third quarter, and he handled a majority of the push downfield with 22 yards on the drive. ...

Joseph Kennedy III eyeing primary challenge Dem Senator

Joseph Kennedy III, a Democratic congressman from Massachusetts, is eyeing a primary challenge to Sen. Edward Markey, a report said Friday. Kennedy, the 38-year-old grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, told a Democratic official this week that he is considering challenging the 73-year-old Markey instead of running for re-election next year, the New York Times reported. Kennedy and his staff members have not publicly commented on the plan, but an adviser to Markey said he planned to fight any challenge to his seat. “Ed is not going anywhere,” Paul Tencher, a senior Markey adviser told the Times. “He’s going to run, and he’s going to run no matter who is in this race.” Last month, Politico reported that someone was poll-testing a matchup between Markey and Kennedy — creating speculation he may challenge him for the seat. At the time, a spokesperson for Kennedy said he planned to run for re-election, but didn’t deny that he had commissioned the poll. Credit: Source link The post Joseph...

New Jersey wins Little League World Series opener

When you say you’re Mr. Cool, well, you better be Mr. Cool when the moment calls for it. Jayden Capindica is Mr. Cool. Capindica’s glove and bat boosted the Elmora Little League of Elizabeth, N.J., to a 6-2 victory on Friday over the Sprague Little League of Salem, Ore., in both teams’ opener at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. With his team down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Capindica dove head-first to snag a blooper just to the left of the pitcher’s mound, then alertly threw to second to double-off a runner. As any great major leaguer would, Capindica immediately followed his slick catch with a sharp at-bat. Staring at a bases-loaded situation and one out in the top of the fifth, Capindica smoothly lined a single up the middle, driving in Sal Garcia and J.R. Rosado to make it 3-2. All of this came after Capindica stared into the ESPN cameras during player introductions and coolly said, “I’m Jayden Capindica, and I’m Mr. Cool.” “He’s not cool, like the ‘coo...

Cain Velasquez to wrestle for Lucha Libre AAA at Garden

Cain Velasquez is coming to New York to fight — in a wrestling ring. The former UFC heavyweight champion turned wrestler has signed to be a part of Mexico-based promotion Lucha Libre AAA’s two shows in the United States this year, according to ESPN. That includes the Sept. 15 event at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. The second will be on Oct. 13 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. There has been no official announcement of Velasquez being a part of either show. The 37-year-old Velasquez, whose last UFC fight was a loss to Francis Ngannou in February, made his wrestling debut on Aug 3 at AAA Triplemania and drew praise for his work during a six-man-tag-team match that included All Elite Wrestling’s Cody Rhodes. Velasquez, whose UFC contract allows him to participate in pro wrestling, is a big draw in Mexico and Triplemania drew an average of more than 1.6 million viewers on TV Azteca. Where Jets may turn next as kicker conundrum continues

Taylor Bertolet had the locker closest to the door Thursday night in the Jets’ locker room. As he got dressed, reporters gathered around and a few teammates offered him encouragement on their way out. Then, Bertolet turned and faced the reporters and answered questions about going 1-for-3 on extra points in the Jets’ 22-10 preseason win over the Falcons. He did make a 49-yard field goal, but the focus was on the two misses and the Jets’ continuing search for a kicker. “I’ve just got to do a better job,” Bertolet said. “My job is putting it through the uprights.” In fairness to Bertolet, he had just three practices with holder Lachlan Edwards and the two may still be getting used to each other. On both kicks, Bertolet missed wide left. He said after the game that he “wrapped around the ball a little bit.” Whatever the reason for Bertolet’s struggles, he had better get them straightened out fast. It would not be a surprise to see the Jets bring in another kicker to compete with Bert...

US court declines again to halt Trump family planning rules

SAN FRANCISCO — A U.S. appeals court has declined once again to immediately halt new Trump administration rules that bar taxpayer-funded clinics from referring patients for abortions. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals late Friday rejected a request from more than 20 states, Planned Parenthood and the American Medical Association to block the rules from taking effect while the case proceeds. A three-judge panel and an 11-judge panel have already said the rules can take effect while the administration appeals lower court rulings that blocked them. Oral arguments are next month. Planned Parenthood has said it will leave the federal Title X program by Monday if the rules aren’t blocked. About 4 million women are served nationwide under the program, which is designed to improve access to family planning for low-income women. Mets look overmatched by lowly Royals in series-opening dud

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — They couldn’t save a few hits from the previous game? Such is baseball’s fickle nature that the Mets could total a season-high 23 hits against the Braves one night and then appear completely overmatched at the plate by the hapless Royals the next. Neutered by mediocre left-hander Mike Montgomery and the Royals’ bullpen, the Mets lost 4-1 at Kauffman Stadium for their fourth defeat in five games. The Mets (62-60) arrived wanting to sweep this team that began the night 30 games removed from first place in the AL Central, but will now have to scramble over the next two days just to escape with a series win. Among the conspicuous absentees in this one was Pete Alonso, who went from 5-for-5 Thursday night to hitless in three at-bats with a walk Friday. But the Mets received next to nothing from the fifth spot in the batting order on down, as Todd Frazier, Juan Lagares, Joe Panik, Tomas Nido and Ruben Tejada/Luis Guillorme combined for only two hits. Amed Rosario cam...

Vomiting vultures swarm NY couple’s $700K vacation home

“The smell is like a thousand rotting corpses.” Dozens of black vultures have swarmed a $700K home in West Palm Beach — defecating and vomiting on nearly every inch of the country club property — which was purchased by a New York couple and supposed to be their vacation house. “It’s a disaster,” said homeowner Anthony Casimano in an interview with WPBF. “It’s a laughable disaster. You can’t make this up.” Anthony and his wife, Siobhan, came forward this week to speak out about the Hitchcock-like horror story that’s been unfolding at their luxurious Florida home following repeated run-ins with the vomiting and defecating birds of prey. The couple, which has a 2-year-old daughter, can’t even park their car or enjoy themselves at the three-bedroom residence — located within the Ibis Golf and Country Club — without getting bombarded. “The vultures just vomit everywhere,” Siobhan told The Palm Beach Post. “Defecating and vomiting. It’s just gross. We can’t even go back down to the h...

Daniel Jones shows Giants something new

One of the characteristics Giants general manager Dave Gettleman lists as absolutely essential for any quarterback — especially one who makes a living in the New York market — is the ability to face and overcome adversity. “It’s more than just collecting data and looking at a guy’s physical talent,’’ Gettleman said. “It’s about his makeup.’’ The Giants learned something new — or at least had their opinions reinforced — about Daniel Jones’ makeup in Friday night’s 32-13 preseason victory over the Backup Bears at MetLife Stadium. After a sizzling debut last week, Jones started fast once again and then fizzled, twice losing the ball on fumbles. How would he respond to his first real struggles of the summer? Fine. Just fine. Jones finished up an eventful evening by completing his final eight passes on two scoring drives — four on each of the possessions — and his last throw was one to behold. He perfectly led T.J. Jones down the left sideline for a 15-yard touchdown hookup that put th...

Amed Rosario’s Mets rise with draws Didi Gregorius comparisons

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The shortstop who plays across town from Amed Rosario might serve as the best example of a player at his position who figured it out during a season and became a star. Didi Gregorius was 25 years old, in his third major league season, when the transformation began with the Yankees. Gregorius went from a below-average offensive player in the first half of 2015 with a .619 OPS, to something more special. In the final 74 games of that season, he posted a .762 OPS in a coming-out of sorts. He has been among the game’s best shortstops since. Now the Mets could be witnessing a similar blossoming with the 23-year-old Rosario, who is among the National League’s hottest hitters. He entered Friday’s game against the Royals with a .948 OPS over his past 30 games. In his first 87 games this season, Rosario posted a .713 OPS. “That is a good analogy,” manager Mickey Callaway said, when presented with the Gregorius-Rosario comparison. As a coordinator in Cleveland’s minor lea...

General Electric stock bounces back after fraud accusations

Light bulb maker General Electric bounced back from fraud allegations Friday after CEO Larry Culp bought stock and Wall Street analysts stood up for the company. Culp, who took over the troubled conglomerate last year, bought nearly $2 million worth of GE stock, or 252,200 shares, for $7.93 a share, he said in a regulatory filing. Wall Street analysts then came out in force to push back against accounting scam allegations published by Bernie Madoff whistleblower Harry Markopolos — sending GE stock up 9.9 percent, to $8.79 per share, following Thursday’s 11.3 percent plunge. “Markopolos’ attack on GE using his Madoff credibility and his sheriff mentality is disingenuous and does not pass the smell test,” short seller Andrew Left wrote in a Citron Research update. For reasons more technical than Left’s, Bronte Capital’s John Hempton rejected the report as “misleading” and dismissed its comparison of GE’s and Genworth’s long-term care businesses, which showed GE to be deficient by ma...

Behind ESPN’s decision to move on from Michelle Beadle

Whether you love or hate ESPN, there is one thing about the ethos of the world’s most powerful sports media company that you should know. At its core — forgetting all the internal politics, the sometimes relentless corporate synergies and the overproduction on games — it is built on the backs of grinders. As ESPN gets back to basics under relatively new network president Jimmy Pitaro, it means its NBA coverage is more like 24/7/365 scoopmeister Adrian Wojnarowski than it is like punching-the-clock host Michelle Beadle. That is the main reason Beadle no longer fits in at ESPN. Even at $5 million a year, she has no significant place on its air because she wasn’t all-in. She was already moved from the morning show, “Get Up!” Now, she has been deemed expendable as the host of ABC/ESPN’s premiere NBA studio show, “NBA Countdown.” Once at the top of ESPN, she is not officially gone yet, but she might as well be. When former ESPN president John Skipper resigned because of a cocaine pr...

Race is on to fill huge fantasy void left by ‘Game of Thrones’

The post-“Game of Thrones” TV boom is here. The sun has hardly set on the fantasy behemoth — which ended in May with a record-breaking 19.3 million viewers and 32 Emmy nods — but other networks are already jockeying to replace HBO’s huge hit with their own big-budget epics. Whether or not the public wants more fantasy is beside the point, since networks now look at the genre with dollar signs in their eyes — even if these series are only half as successful as “GoT.” Many of these impending shows — including “Lord of the Rings” (Amazon), “Chronicles of Narnia” (Netflix) and “Kingkiller Chronicles” (Showtime) — have yet to reveal details. Here’s a look at those series we do know something about. “Carnival Row” (Amazon) Premiering Aug. 30, this is one of the only “Game of Thrones” successors not based on a popular novel. It’s an original work from the writer of “Pacific Rim,” set in a steampunk London filled with magical creatures and murder — with stars Orlando Bloom, supermodel ...

NYPD cops keep mental health secret out of demotion fears

Cops like NYPD suicide victim Robert Echeverria keep their mental health struggles a secret for fear their bosses will take their guns away — and demote them to a desk job where they’ll lose their overtime pay, his sister told The Post. “I offered my brother $500 to go to a private psychiatrist,” Eileen Echeverria said Friday, two days after the troubled officer killed himself in his Laurelton, Queens home. “He said, ‘I can’t go to a psychiatrist because they’ll put me on the rubber gun squad,” she said. “They’re going to find out,” she said he told her. “Forget it. I’ll be all right.” Before Echeverria, 56, held a gun to his head and pulled the trigger on Wednesday, she had repeatedly warned the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau that he was a risk to himself or others, the sister said, speaking from her home in West Islip, NY. Unless the NYPD gets more pro-active about cop suicides, the tragedies will continue to happen, she said. She urged that the NYPD reach out to at-risk officer...

Eli Manning shows he also can put Giants in the end zone

Eli Manning answered the bell. A week after Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones led the team on a touchdown drive in his first NFL action last week, Eli Manning answered and likely quieted any doubts about him opening the season as the starter. Manning went a perfect 4-for-4 passing for 42 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler. It got the Giants in the end zone against the Bears’ second-team defense to open both team’s second preseason game at MetLife Stadium on Friday night. The Giants needed 10 plays to go 79 yards. Jones, Manning heir apparent whenever the time comes, created some buzz last week against the Jets when he went 5-of-5 passing for 67 yards and a touchdown in his first drive of the preseason. Manning played just one short series in that game, but against the Bears showed he’s still capable of getting it done for the Giants. Slow start but expect a jolt from Manson arrival

When it finally gets going — and that would be Episode 3 — Season 2 of the Netflix series “Mindhunter” finds some resonance by delving into one of the most notorious 20th-century serial killer cases — the Atlanta child murders of 1979-81. At least 28 children, adolescents, and adults were killed. FBI Special Agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) falls into the case almost accidentally, when he checks into an Omni hotel on an assignment to interview two other serial killers, William Pierce and William Henry Hance, and is led by a desk clerk (Sierra McClain) to three mothers whose children have disappeared. The pain and frustration conveyed by these women persuade him to find a way into the case, which occurs with a kidnapping that crosses state lines. The scenes give the usually bland Groff a chance to stand out, and it will be interesting to see how the series handles issues of crime and race as it traces the FBI’s involvement in the remaining six episodes. “Mindhunter” juggles several...
