Mets lose 14-inning crusher after Jacob deGrom does everything

The Mets got another outstanding effort — and a homer — from Jacob deGrom and even though their offense didn’t produce much, they seemed primed for another dramatic victory. But after leaving a runner on third in both the 10th and 11th innings, the Mets’ luck finally ran out in a 2-1, 14-inning loss to the Braves at Citi Field. The defeat snapped the Mets’ five-game winning streak, as Jeurys Familia faltered in the final inning and gave up an RBI single to Billy Hamilton to give Atlanta the lead. The Mets couldn’t rally in the bottom of the inning against Mark Melancon and squandered a chance to get within a game of the Cubs for the second NL wild card. Their chances of coming back were hindered when manager Mickey Callaway had to resort to pinch hitting with Steven Matz in the final inning. The Braves ended up with their sixth straight win to open the series in Queens. After six Mets relievers combined to throw six shutout innings, Familia spoiled it. He walked Tyler Flowers to...

DOJ argues Civil Rights Act does not protect LGBTQ workers

The Justice Department on Friday urged the Supreme Court to rule that gay and transgender people are not protected against discrimination under the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The federal law prohibits discrimination only on the basis of a person’s “biological” sex, the administration argues in a brief to the high court. “The ordinary meaning of ‘sex’ is biologically male or female; it does not include sexual orientation,” reads the brief, submitted by U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco. The justices said in April that they will hear three cases involving people who claim they were fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Illinois trooper dies from gunshot wounds serving warrant

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — An Illinois State Police trooper died from wounds suffered early Friday while executing a search warrant in East St. Louis. Trooper Nicholas Hopkins, 33, of Waterloo, a 10-year veteran of the force, was wounded during an exchange of gunfire while serving the warrant at an East St. Louis home, said State Police Acting Director Brendan Kelly. He later died at a hospital. After the shooting, police surrounded the home and arrested three people. Police remained on the scene throughout the day, uncertain if another suspect was barricaded in the house, according to authorities. The three people arrested were not identified. Police didn’t say if anyone else was shot, nor have they revealed the issues addressed in the search warrant. Waterloo Mayor Tom Smith says Hopkins was married and the father of four-year-old twins and an infant daughter. “It is nearly impossible to express the depth of my sadness and my condolences to the entire Hopkins’ family and his friend...

Trump supporters furious A$AP Rocky never thanked president

Two African American Trump supporters who lobbied the White House to help A$AP Rocky are still angry the rapper never bothered to thank the president for interceding in his Swedish assault case, a new report revealed. The two supporters — Ohio pastor Darrell Scott and Kareem Lanier, who chairs the pro-Trump Urban Revitalization Coalition — met personally with the president and, separately, also spoke with the rapper’s manager, John Ehmann, Yahoo! News reported. “The White House didn’t ask for anything. There were no conditions attached, but my condition and Kareem’s condition was that all I’m asking for you guys to do is say thank you,” Scott told Yahoo! he stressed to the rapper’s manager. Ehmann promised in response, “If a serial killer gets Rocky out of jail, I would have no problem saying thank you to the serial killer.” The rapper spent 33 days in a Swedish jail, and was sprung on Aug. 2. He promptly thanked his fans, his friends, his managers, attorneys and label execs, and ...

Five things Jets need to see in preseason clash vs. Saints

The Jets will get a final preseason look at their starters Saturday night when they host the Saints at MetLife Stadium. It will be one last chance to work out the glitches and get everyone together with the season opener against the Bills coming just two weeks from Sunday. The starters are not expected to play in the preseason finale against the Eagles on Thursday. For new head coach Adam Gase and the Jets, it has been a positive training camp. Other than the loss of Avery Williamson for the season to a torn ACL and the four-game suspensions for Chris Herndon and Brandon Copeland, there have been a lot of good vibes around this Jets team. “I think where our locker room is right now, where guys are really working hard and trying to focus on creating the best team we can possibly be,” Gase said. “The unselfishness here is outstanding. Guys just, they work. It’s not about them, it’s about the team and I’ve been very impressed with how our players have gone about their business.” Here...

Tesla short-seller David Einhorn calls on Elon Musk to resign

A prominent hedge fund manager is calling on Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk to resign following reports that the electric automaker’s solar panels have been catching fire. Greenlight Capital’s David Einhorn, a short-seller who has publicly sparred with Musk in the past, tweeted his comments Friday morning in the wake of Walmart suing Tesla, claiming it installed faulty solar panels that caught fire at seven Walmart locations — causing millions in damage. “If @Tesla wants to save the human species, it should pay more attention to the safety of its own customers,” the hedge fund short-seller, who is betting on Tesla’s stock decline, tweeted to his nearly 40,000 followers. “How many solar panels are still defective and could cause fires? @Tesla should immediately notify the people who live in and work in buildings at risk,” he added, finishing his tweet by saying that Musk “should resign.” Einhorn is no stranger to making inflammatory statements about Musk and Tesla. Last summer, ...

Sinclair snaps up 21 local sports networks from 21st Century Fox

Twenty-one local sports networks that used to belong to 21st Century Fox — and carried games from the Miami Heat to the Atlanta Braves — are now owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. The transfer means Sinclair’s Diamond group is now the country’s largest collection of regional sports networks, with a footprint that includes exclusive local rights to 42 professional teams. The portfolio consists of 14 Major League Baseball teams, 16 National Basketball Association teams and 12 National Hockey League teams. Sinclair has already signaled its interest in acquiring more RSNs, particularly the four that AT&T is expected to sell. CEO Chris Ripley told The Wall Street Journal on Friday that the company would be “very interested in looking at those and filling out our regional sports network footprint.” Sinclair, the conservative owner of 193 TV stations across the country, was once the country’s largest TV station group, but ceded that throne late last year when Nexstar Media reached a d...

Psychologist approved Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide watch removal

WASHINGTON — A psychologist at the federal detention center in New York City where financier Jeffrey Epstein was being held while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges approved his removal from suicide watch before he killed himself, the U.S. Justice Department said on Friday. The disclosure came in a letter dated on Thursday from Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd to the Democratic chairman and ranking Republican member of the Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. The letter was sent by the department to Reuters on Friday. Epstein died on Aug. 10 in his cell, and an autopsy report concluded that he hanged himself. Jets kicker Taylor Bertolet’s job could be on line in this one

Taylor Bertolet points to one big reason why he will kick better this week than last week: practice. The Jets kicker had just three practices with the team before taking the field last week in Atlanta, where he missed two extra points. Now, he has had two weeks working with holder Lachlan Edwards and long snapper Thomas Hennessy as he takes the field Saturday against the Saints, kicking for his job. “I feel a lot better just getting more work,” Bertolet said. “We only had 12 field goals last week before we went into the game. I was here last year, so I got a lot of work and a lot of reps, but you have to get back into the groove of it. I had a great week of practice. I feel a lot more comfortable.” Bertolet was with the Jets in training camp last year, but was cut before the season. This year, he is hoping to stick, but the Jets could be in the market for another kicker as teams cut down their rosters over the next week. Bertolet said he is not feeling any more pressure than he usu...

Why roster cuts will be extra-tough for Giants’ Pat Shurmur

The cut-down to the 53-man roster was anticlimactic a year ago, so much so that a day after the cuts were made, the Giants sliced off another seven players and replaced them with guys waived throughout the league. The depth on the team this time around is considerably better, which is why trimming the roster will be more challenging. “I think so,’’ coach Pat Shurmur said Friday. “I think that’s a good thing. You want competition within the groups. A year ago, we cut from 90 to 53 and there was only a couple guys that ended up on other rosters. I sort of feel like this year we may end up cutting more guys that are going to be attractive to maybe another team, which tells me that our 90 is better, and also tells me the players are embracing what we are talking about. “The goal is to either make our team or somebody else’s. I believe in our team, I love our team, I love what our team is trying to do. It’s going to be much tougher for me this year when we get to that point, having to s...

SNY broadcasters destroy Mets Players’ Weekend uniforms

The Players’ Weekend all-white jerseys the Mets wore Friday night drew plenty of Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez during the game against the rival Braves at Citi Field. “I can’t even fathom who decided that white-on-white was a good idea,” Cohen said in an exasperated tone. “But of course the Mets, who are wearing white caps as part of the white uniform, but Jacob deGrom is wearing a black cap because a white hat would be a distraction for the hitter if the pitcher wore a white cap.” Hernandez also had his own unique take on the controversial uniforms that also contain the players’ nicknames. “It looks a little bit like the old ‘Mad’ magazine comic strip ‘Spy vs. Spy’,” Hernandez said. “Yeah, that’s one way of looking at it,” Cohen said sarcastically. Many on Twitter thought the uniforms were horrendous and that Hernandez’s comparison was right on the money: Credit: Source link The post SNY broadcasters destroy Mets Players’ Weekend uniforms appeared first on Fox USA Live . ...

Teen with measles visited Disneyland, may have exposed thousands

SANTA ANA, Calif. — A New Zealand teenager who visited Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood tourist hotspots and the beach this month had measles and may have exposed others, public health agencies announced Friday. The girl arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Aug. 11 and went to the Desert Palms Hotel in Anaheim, officials said. She is believed to have gone to Disneyland and the Disney California Adventure Park on Aug. 12 and then Universal Studios, the TCL Chinese Theatre and Madame Tussauds in Hollywood and the Santa Monica beach and pier on Aug. 14-15, authorities said. The girl has since returned to New Zealand, said Dr. Nichole Quick, Orange County’s health care officer. The agency said it has been working with the facilities to reach people who had close contact. There are no current reports that anyone has contracted measles from the teen, Quick said. She said she expects to see more measles cases, generally, among international travelers who visit Californ...
