Mets desperately need this Jeurys Familia version

Mickey Callaway isn’t willing to relegate Edwin Diaz into lower-leverage situations yet. But with Diaz still struggling, reliever Jeurys Familia’s sudden return to form couldn’t come at a better time for the Mets. The Mets’ 7-4 loss to Washington on Sunday at Citi Field snapped an eight-game winning streak, but Familia’s dominant eighth inning was an auspicious sign and left Callaway suitably impressed. “I really am. That was a hell of an inning,” Callaway said. “His effort level is right where you want it. He doesn’t have to throw 95, 97 [mph] every pitch, just control your effort level, keep your head on the target, and he did that [Sunday]. And the results are there. “That’s a turbo sinker he’s throwing up there, and if he executes it you’re going to get swings like [Gerardo] Parra took off him. He’s making huge strides. He continues to work and continues to have faith in himself.” It wasn’t just Parra that Familia put on the back foot. He struck out the side, fanning Parra, ca...

Jabrill Peppers reveals Giants’ ‘turnover trophy’ secret

Jabrill Peppers revealed a little team secret called the “turnover trophy.” Each day, whoever forces a turnover during practice is given an actual trophy — reportedly a small one — to reward their efforts. “Yes, it makes you compete and want to go out there and cause turnovers. It’s just a good little thing,” Peppers said. Ballentine is leading the way with five trophies. Considering Eli Manning threw only one pass against the Jets, a game-opening play when the 16-year veteran missed a wide-open Rhett Ellison down the field and instead found Scott Simonson for a 3-yard gain, he came into practice ready to go. Manning continues to develop his chemistry with Cody Latimer, highlighted Sunday afternoon by a handful of good connections. “I thought he did a great job. I think he’s practiced well throughout [training camp],” Shurmur said. “Now, after I’ve watched him [during] this three-week stretch, I think he’s throwing the ball better than he did last summer. He’s got a real good gr...

DeAndre Baker injury news gets worse for Giants

The Giants’ streak of injuries continued Sunday when first-round pick DeAndre Baker “felt something” in his knee during individual warm-ups at practice. He didn’t participate in team drills and had an MRI exam. While there was no official announcement, the rookie reportedly sprained his left knee. He will undergo further tests Monday and the timeline for recovery is unclear. “Yeah, just in his individual warm-up type stuff, something with his knee,” head coach Pat Shurmur said following practice. “We’re just checking it out [with] an MRI. I have no information on that right now. [It happened] just kind of in the warm-up drills. He just felt something so he’s getting that checked out.” Baker had been penciled in as a starter opposite Janoris Jenkins, making a potential serious knee injury a big concern for the Giants. Baker had one tackle in the 33-21 win over the Jets on Thursday night. The Giants drafted Baker to complete their trifecta of first-round picks in April, joining quar...

Jordan Spieth keeps FedEx Cup hopes alive

It was classic Jordan Spieth golf on what his caddie, Michael Greller, called “the least Jordan golf course that we play all year.” But with some terrific short-game work and arguably one of the best putting rounds of his career, Spieth shot a final-round 67 at Liberty National in Jersey City on Sunday and finished the Northern Trust with a total of 12-under, four shots back of winner Patrick Reed. “It’s probably one of the worst tracks for my game,” Spieth said. “Overall it was a strong improvement on the mentality side and physical side tee-to-green, even though it may not show up that way.” Spieth came into the week ranked No. 67 in the FedEx Cup standings, just inside the top 70 who make it to the second leg of the playoffs next week in Chicago. He has had some shaky weekends this year, and after a third-round 74 this week, he gained quite a bit of confidence with Sunday’s scrambling score. That included holing a sand shot on No. 12 (after he missed the green with a wedge), plu...

Three dogs die from toxic algae after swimming in NC pond

Three pups on a doggy play date at a North Carolina pond were poisoned by toxic algae and died within hours, their owner said. Melissa Martin and Denise Mintz said they took their beloved pups — Abby, Izzy, and Harpo  — to the body of water in Wilmington, N.C. Thursday evening, where the pets chased a ball and rolled around in the mud, before cooling off with a dip. “What started out as a fun night for them has ended in the biggest loss of our lives,” Martin wrote in a Facebook post that has since been shared more than 15,000 times. “[The dogs] contracted blue green algae poisoning and there was nothing they could do.” Within 15 minutes of leaving the pond, Abby, a West Highland white terrier began to seize, Martin told CNN. Upon arriving at the veterinary hospital, Izzy, also a Westie, had a seizure as well. Then, Harpo, a 6-year-old “doodle” mix therapy dog began to convulse and showed signs of liver failure. By midnight on Friday, all three dogs had died, Martin said. “...

Epstein’s guards were working ‘extreme’ OT at short-staffed lockup

The two Manhattan jail guards who allegedly failed to monitor Jeffrey Epstein before he died had been working “extreme” overtime shifts amid a severe staffing shortage at the facility, reports said Sunday. The unidentified jailers at the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center violated procedure by failing to check on Epstein every 30 minutes before he apparently committed suicide in his cell, sources told Reuters. One guard was working his fifth straight day of overtime and the other was toiling under mandatory overtime, a person familiar with operations at the lower-Manhattan lockup told The Associated Press. The guards also violated procedure by leaving the convicted pedophile without a cellmate, the New York Times reported. There’s no surveillance video of Epstein’s death, which apparently occurred when the 66-year-old pervert appeared to hang himself Saturday morning, law-enforcement officials told The Post. Although there are cameras in the 9 South wing at the MCC, where E...

Stumping 2020 candidates get grubby at Iowa State Fair

Mayor Bill de Blasio wasn’t the only one pigging out at the Iowa State Fair last week. Hizzoner downed a sizable corn dog, veggie “totchos” — nachos using tater tots in place of tortilla chips — an ice cream bar and a lemonade at the fair, a cornucopia of delicious delights. His fellow presidential hopefuls also spent the weekend chowing down. Andrew Yang, whose campaign is underpinned by the promise of a $1,000-per-month “freedom dividend” for all American adults, on Friday demolished a roast turkey leg in between sips from massive plastic cup. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) had to look high-and-low in the heartland for something to fit his vegan diet Saturday, but ultimately found a “golden fried” peanut butter and jelly sandwich — served on a stick, naturally — according to USA Today. “It’s a little slice of heaven,” Booker told reporters — and apparently it was good enough for seconds, as he quickly ordered another. Booker was perhaps tipped off to the spot by Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gab...

This is the last thing Yankees’ Gary Sanchez needs right now

TORONTO — Two games back from a second trip to the injured list and Gary Sanchez took a foul tip off his bare hand Saturday and got drilled in the left elbow Sunday. “A little sore,’’ Sanchez said of the elbow that received treatment following Sunday’s 1-0 win over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Sanchez, who caught Saturday and was the DH on Sunday, got hit with a pitch in the sixth inning to load the bases and batted in the ninth when he struck out. “We will keep an eye on him,’’ Aaron Boone said. “I think he is going to be OK. As a hitter, no pad there, that’s that one that kind of wears on you. You want to try and get the swelling out of there. It can stiffen up on you. I am not worried about it kind of long term but overnight, how we treat it and get that swelling out.’’ Credit: Source link The post This is the last thing Yankees’ Gary Sanchez needs right now appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https://ift.tt/2KMkKZI

Meet the restaurateur buying up prime Hamptons locales

The man who is on his way to owning the most valuable waterfront property in Montauk is a Greek immigrant and restaurateur who owns three NY eateries and a construction empire — despite starting his life in America working in a factory. But not much more seems to be known about Merkourios Angeliades, 77, who has been quietly assembling waterfront properties on the Hamptons’ most eastern end in hopes of building a new luxury resort that will rival Gurney’s Montauk Resort and Seawater Spa, and Gurney’s Star Island Resort and Marina. Even the most connected locals were drawing a blank last week when asked about Angeliades, who is poised to become one of the most sought-after businessmen in the Hamptons. “No one really knows him,” said one person involved in the sale. “He can be a very behind-the-scenes kind of guy.” What is known is that for the past two years, Angeliades, the owner of Kyma Greek restaurants in Roslyn and Manhattan, has been quietly negotiating the purchase of Montau...

Yankees’ Torres has uneven return from mysterious ailment

TORONTO — Gleyber Torres returned to the lineup Sunday at shortstop when Didi Gregorius was given the day off against the Blue Jays. Torres missed the previous four games with what the Yankees are calling a core issue. “I don’t know exactly what the terminology is,’’ Aaron Boone said of his All-Star second baseman who went for tests in New York last Sunday and again Wednesday. “He is having a core issue.’’ Torres went 0-for-3 and was involved in two double plays the Yankees turned in the eighth and ninth innings of a 1-0 win. “Couple of big plays in the field and I thought he got off a couple of good swings, the one he flew out to right and a runner on second and getting that guy over. I felt like he just missed clipping that ball,’’ Boone said. “Checking on him in the middle of the game he said he was good so hopefully that’s the first step of him getting back into the fold.’’ Twenty-seven and growing. That describes the Yankees’ injured list after placing lefty reliever Steph...

Timex joins firms seeking to block tech’s ill effects

How much for that tin foil hat? Products that block electromagnetic waves are becoming a big business as a growing number of people look for ways to protect themselves from the ill effects of technology. From paint and tents to hoodies and socks, makers of products that claim to block harmful electromagnetic fields are on the rise, sellers say. And it’s not just people on the fringes who are buying — or selling. Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey recently revealed that he sits in a specialized tent for regular 30-minute sessions in order to get away from it all — sending sales of the EMF-shielding tent, made by Missouri-based SaunaSpace, through the roof, according to reports. “If I were to bring my phone in there, for instance, there’s no signal whatsoever. There’s no radiation EMF from power, from Wi-Fi, from cellular,” Dorsey said on a fitness podcast in March. While most of these newfangled products are a small business reality, some big names are catching on. Timex, for exa...

ESPN’s Jessica Mendoza misses ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ after car accident

Jessica Mendoza missed ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” broadcast from San Francisco because the analyst was in a car accident Friday. Mendoza, who is also a Mets’ baseball operations adviser, had her car rear-ended at full speed while driving on the Southern California freeway, according to USA Today . She is expected to return to the air next week after missing the Giants-Phillies game Sunday. Ben Cafardo, ESPN communications director, tweeted about the incident Sunday night. He wrote that Mendoza is in recovery after a “scary ordeal” and that he hopes to see her in Williamsport, Pa., next week for the Little League Classic game between the Cubs and Pirates. “Ever a champ, she made every effort to be in the booth tonight but the much better decision was to rest and recover with her family,” Cafardo wrote. ESPN did not replace Mendoza in the booth, leaving Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez on the call with on-field reporter Buster Olney on vacation. Credit: Source link The po...

Dad praises suspected killer son amid manhunt

The father of one of the two Canadian serial-murder suspects, said on Sunday he won’t believe his son is a killer without proof — and gave him “kudos” for evading the authorities. Alan Schmegelsky said he was overjoyed when his son Bryer, 18, and Kam McLeod, 19, blew through a police checkpoint in Manitoba last month. “These boys are smart, they’re intelligent.. kudos boys, kudos,” he told Australia’s 60 Minutes, in an episode aired on Sunday night. The show interviewed the father during the weeks-long manhunt for the teenagers — and also after they were believed to have been found dead last week. Schmegelsky said the loss of his son is “heartbreaking” despite the crimes that the teen was accused of committing. “You may think he’s a monster but he’s my son, he’s my Bryer,” he said. “I’m not going to see my son as a murderer until I get some facts. You want me to sit here and tell me my son positively murdered your co-citizen? Because I won’t, because I can’t.” The former fugitiv...

Patrick Reed’s revival has benefits

Aptly, it was Captain America who rose up in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. It might have taken a while for Patrick Reed to get past his Masters hangover, but 16 months after he slipped on his green jacket for his lone major championship victory, it seems like the feisty Texan is back. Reed, whose heroics in the Ryder Cup earned him the patriotic moniker, emerged from the star-studded leaderboard to shoot a final-round 69 Sunday and win the Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. His four-round total of 16-under gave him a one-shot victory over Abraham Ancer, while Harold Varner III and Jon Rahm finished at 14-under and late charges from Adam Scott (13-under), Jordan Spieth (12-under) and Rory McIlroy (12-under) all came up short. “It’s amazing, just to be back and to feel like I’ve been playing some solid golf and finally having it pay off and to come out as a victory, it’s been a while. Been a little too long honestly,” said Reed, who started the day w...

Sam Darnold has plan to bring out greatness in Jets offense

It wasn’t exactly Joe Namath before Super Bowl III, but Sam Darnold all but predicted greatness from the Jets offense this season. “If we can get the details right, I think we’ll be hard to beat,” Darnold said Sunday at the end of practice at the Jets training facility in Florham Park. By details Darnold means fine-tuning an Adam Gase offense that is still building a scheme to take advantage of all of its weapons. It’s an evolving process that adds meaning to the preseason as Darnold and Gase learn the skills of those on his roster. “That’s where we can really use these preseason games to our advantage,” Darnold said, “really understanding what guys do well. The fact of the matter is when the lights come on, some guys play well. We kind of got a glimpse of that in [the first] preseason game. There were a lot of guys who upped their game when the lights came on and it was good to see. As these preseason games continue we’re going to keep finding guys who play well. With this offense...

Where Knicks’ RJ Barrett stands in continued development

Knicks rookie RJ Barrett finished summer league in July with a flourish following a horrendous start and hopes he will carry that improvement over. However, it won’t be with Team Canada at the World Cup in China. Though his father, Rowan, is the general manager of Team Canada, Barrett elected to show up for the Aug. 4 start of training camp and participated in a few days of drills before leaving the workouts in Toronto. He won’t play in the World Cup, citing a slightly strained calf. That decision gave Barrett the opportunity to attend the NBA’s annual rookie orientation/photo shoot in Teaneck, N.J., along with fellow Knicks rookie Ignas Brazdeikis, the team’s second-round pick. Brazdeikis, a Canadian citizen who was born in Lithuania, was not invited to Team Canada’s camp. In his Las Vegas Summer League finale in mid-July, Barrett posted 21 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and had double-doubles in each of his previous two games. Still he finished with a shooting percentage o...

Epstein’s cause of death still not official after autopsy: ME

Jeffrey Epstein’s autopsy has been completed, according to city officials — but the Medical Examiner’s Office needs “further information” before determining a cause of death. Sources tell The Post that a determination will likely come by early next week. “Today, a medical examiner performed the autopsy of Jeffrey Epstein,” said Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson in a statement Sunday night. “The ME’s determination is pending further information at this time. At the request of those representing the decedent, and with the awareness of the federal prosecutor, I allowed a private pathologist (Dr. Michael Baden) to observe the autopsy examination. This is routine practice.” Sampson added, “My office defers to the involved law enforcement agencies regarding other investigations around this death. Inquiries regarding the determination of the Chief Medical Examiner should be directed towards my office.” Attempts to reach Dr. Baden, the city’s former chief medical examiner an...

De Blasio wins stuffed pig, scarfs down corn dog at Iowa State Fair

President Bill de Blasio? When pigs fly! Hizzoner’s visited the Iowa State Fair as part of his quixotic bid for the White House Sunday, where he scarfed down high-fat foods and played carnival games — scoring himself a stuffed swine in Skee-Ball. “This is a harbinger of things to come,” said de Blasio, holding the hog skyward. “All things are possible.” Hizzoner then took the soapbox at the bellwether event — receiving scattered applause from a sedate crowd that was roughly one-tenth the size of the one that had watched Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders just minutes before. “I love the Iowa State Fair!” bellowed de Blasio. Despite his own flagging poll numbers, de Blasio stressed the need for Democrats to reject a moderate platform in favor of radical ideas that he said would spur voters to the ballot box in 2020. “If we say to the American people we’re just going to change your lives a little bit, a whole lot of people are going to stay home,” said de Blasio. “A little change is not ...

DeChambeau, Koepka make up after raging slow-play dispute

Confrontations in professional golf are as rare as albatrosses and quadruple bogeys. Yet, shortly before 11 on Sunday morning at the Liberty National practice range, Bryson DeChambeau sought out Brooks Koepka to talk about comments Koepka made singling him out for slow play. DeChambeau, who made it clear on Saturday he believes he’s been attacked… Credit: Source link The post DeChambeau, Koepka make up after raging slow-play dispute appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https://ift.tt/2ZVkgXl
