NYT Opinion deletes bizarre tweets about Brett Kavanaugh story

In a bizarre series of tweets and retractions on @nytopinion on Saturday, The New York Times cringingly opined on its latest Brett Kavanaugh story, then retracted the tweet, then retracted the retraction, then posted an apology. The missteps began at 5:13 p.m., when a reckless tweet posted to @nytopinion opined, “Having a penis thrust in your face at a drunken dorm party may seem like harmless fun…” The misfire was apparent commentary on the paper’s latest story on the new Supreme Court justice, which revisits accusations by fellow Yalie Deborah Ramirez, who has said a pantsless Kavenaugh assaulted her at a party during freshman year. Two minutes after that first tweet posted, at 5:16 p.m., a retraction posted reading, “We have deleted an earlier tweet to this article that was poorly phrased.” Soon after, that retraction also vanished. Finally, at 11 p.m., the paper apologized and left it at that. “We deleted a previous tweet regarding this article,” the final tweet read. “It wa...

Browns’ Odell Beckham Jr., Jets’ Jamal Adams excited to square off

BEREA, Ohio — The showdown is finally here. Odell Beckham Jr. and Jamal Adams have called LSU and New York their homes over parts of the past nine years but have never taken the field together. That will change Monday night when Beckham’s Browns and Adams’ Jets face off at MetLife Stadium. “I’m excited,” Beckham said. “I’m sure when the [ball] snaps, he’s not going to be as friendly, but that’s my little bro. That’s my brother. We both wore 33 [at LSU]. When we was in New York, we went to eat. That’s my guy, through and through. He’s a phenomenal player.” The talented and entertaining duo first met when Beckham hosted Adams on a recruiting visit to LSU, but they never got to play together. Beckham was drafted by the Giants in 2014 and later that year, Adams arrived on campus for his freshman year. Beckham did not play in either of the Giants’ preseason games against the Jets after Adams was drafted in 2017. But Monday, they will put their friendship aside for a night as Adams patr...

Mets finding the clutch hit bails out Mickey Callaway

The Mets found the hit. They found it in time so that more Jacob deGrom brilliance was not utterly wasted. They found it in time to protect Mickey Callaway from some, um, curious decisions. Still to be determined is if they found it in time to make this hit part of a mosaic of magic to rally into the playoffs this year. Rajai Davis delivered the hit, his biggest since his two-out, two-run homer off Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the eighth inning in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series that moved the Indians into a 6-6 tie with the Cubs. Chicago ultimately won the game and the title. Will Davis’ bases-clearing, two-out double in the eighth inning Saturday night help bring a more joyful conclusion for his team. That hit provided all the runs in a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers that kept the Mets three games behind the Cubs for the second NL wild card. The game pitted strong Cy Young contenders and neither disappointed. Both Hyun-Jin Ryu and deGrom crafted seven shutout innings, the Dodge...

Donald Trump and John Bolton clashed over Iran sanctions before firing

Former national security advisor John Bolton reportedly clashed with President Donald Trump about United States sanctions on Iran the day before his ouster. The president on Monday afternoon said he may lift some sanctions against the country as a way to kickstart nuclear negations with Tehran, a person close to Bolton told NBC News. Bolton took a hard stance against doing so, the report said. The following morning, Bolton was out as national security advisor. Trump, in tweets , said that he had fired Bolton. “I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration,” Trump wrote. But Bolton denied he was axed and said he resigned, tweeting, “I offered to resign last night and President Trump said, ‘Let’s talk about it tomorrow.’ ” Trump has said he might meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani later this month at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. ‘I want to find out who did this’

In his first English-language interview since getting shot in the Dominican Republic, former Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz told the Boston Globe that he’ can’t rest until his shooter is brought to justice — and describes nearly losing hope during his long recovery. “I want to find out who did this,’’ Big Papi told the paper in a wide-ranging interview at his old stomping grounds, Fenway Park. “I’m not going to sit around and chill if there’s somebody out there who wants to kill me.’’ Authorities in the Dominican Republic have arrested 14 suspects connected to the June 9 shooting at the trendy Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo that left Ortiz badly wounded. Ortiz, however, doesn’t recognize any of the men and is still searching for answers about what really led to the shooting. “I don’t know why I was involved in something like this because I’m not the type of person who looks for trouble or causes trouble,” he told the paper. “All I worry about is trying to help people, a...

Strike looming for General Motors workers

The United Auto Workers union and General Motors remain far apart in ongoing negotiations in Detroit, raising the likelihood of a midnight strike, sources told The Post on Saturday night. UAW leaders are negotiating with GM at the Detroit Marriott, but have reached an “impasse” on health care, according to one source close to the UAW. The union isn’t likely to postpone a strike past the midnight deadline, when the current four-year contract will expire, because the sides are so far apart on the issue of healthcare, the source said. Healthcare “is the aspect that has bridged the greatest divide,” the source said. Another area where there’s an impasse is job security. “Job security remains an issue as it relates to possible plant closures,” the source said. “While we are fighting for better wages, affordable quality health care, and job security, GM refuses to put hard working Americans ahead of their record profits,” union Vice President Terry Dittes said in a statement Saturday ...

How Giants could change because of depleted WR corps

Expect the Giants to look quite different on offense Sunday than they did in the season-opening loss to the Cowboys. Last week, the Giants used 11-personnel formations (one running back and one tight end) nearly 75 percent of the snaps on offense. That will change, with the receiver corps depleted almost beyond recognition. Evan Engram was on the field for 53 of the 69 offensive plays in the first game and Rhett Ellison got just 22 snaps. Those snap-counts will rise for the Giants’ tight ends, with more 12-personnel (one running back, two tight ends). “We’ll let what we’re going to do reveal itself,’’ coach Pat Shurmur said. As for the receivers, starter and No. 1 target Sterling Shepard is out with a concussion. The other starter, Golden Tate, is sitting out a four-game suspension for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. Cody Latimer, the starter in Tate’s spot, is listed as questionable with a calf injury. This would mean Bennie Fowler and Russell Shepar...

FDNY firefighters rescue four people trapped on fire truck ride

Four people got trapped in a fake fire rig at a Staten Island fair on Saturday — and a team of genuine FDNY firefighters rushed to the scene to rescue them. Hilarious photos show the real smoke-eaters in full regalia climbing a ladder to save their pretend brethren stuck on a “Fire Truck” ride. Proving that New York’s Bravest will never leave behind a fellow smoke-eater in distress, the FDNY responded to the comical call at Holy Trinity Church Greek Festival on Richmond Avenue at about 7 p.m. The real firefighters were greeted with cheers and applause as they escorted a woman down to safety, according to video of the ordeal. The rescue took about 15 minutes, and nobody was injured, the FDNY said. How path of Giants’ Daniel Jones could become similar to Josh Allen

The development of highly touted young quarterbacks is always a fascinating study. Do they get on the field right away, or sit back and watch an established veteran for a few weeks or months, perhaps an entire season, before getting a shot? It is not yet fully known which direction the Giants are headed with Daniel Jones, taken with the No. 6-overall pick in April’s draft. His role to start his rookie season is as the backup to Eli Manning, but that could change, depending on Manning’s performance and, more critically, the ability of the team to win games and exist on the fringe of playoff contention. The Bills went a different direction with Josh Allen, a player they traded up (from No. 12 to No. 7) to secure in the first round of the 2018 draft. Allen — big, athletic, raw and strong-armed out of Wyoming — did not win the job coming out of last summer but did not sit long behind Nathan Peterman. After a terrible first game, Peterman was benched, and the Bills handed the ball to Al...

Jets growing pains prove worth of NFL preseason slate

The way most NFL coaches treated the preseason, it would be easy to conclude it doesn’t really matter unless you’re a rookie or a free agent trying to make the team. Any player of substance hardly touched the field until the first game of the regular season. Jets running back Le’Veon Bell and center Ryan Kalil didn’t see any preseason snaps, and their lack of activity played a part in the dismal performance of the offense in a 17-16 loss to the Bills last Sunday. A week later, Kalil is confident there will be improvement along the offensive line when the Jets play the Browns on Monday night at MetLife Stadium. “There are still growing pains happening,” Kalil said this week. “We’re working hard and we’re working through a lot of stuff. The more we can play together, the better we’ll be. This is the kind of offense you want to be able to play fast in and we’re getting to that place. We really feel good about what we were able to clean up from last week and looking forward to getting a...

Cubs injury chaos has fantasy owners scrambling for answers

Whether you are looking at fantasy baseball or reality, nothing derails your quest for a championship worse than late-season injuries. Your replacement options are extremely limited, and as you find yourself limping towards the winner’s circle rather than doing a full-on sprint. Though all eyes might be on the Brewers and their need to replace MVP outfielder Christian Yelich, the Cubs find themselves in the exact same boat. In a fight with Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot, the Northsiders are dealing with a rash of injuries that have them, and fantasy owners are desperately scrambling for help. Watching the Cubs lose Javier Baez to a fractured thumb and Addison Russell to a concussion while also dealing with Kris Bryant needing time off to rest a balky knee, concern for that playoff spot is high. For fantasy owners, losing those players is concern as well. Though it might be easy to find replacement-level numbers to match Russell’s production, Baez’s 29 home runs, 85 RBIs an...

Houston Texans have plenty of reason to worry about Deshaun Watson

For what must have felt like minutes — not seconds — to anxious Texans fans on Monday night, Deshaun Watson was suspended in mid-air after taking a punishing hit as he tried to dive over the end zone pylon at the Superdome. As he hurtled through the air, horrible visions of 2017 must have flashed before the Texans’ collective eyes, particularly as Watson was initially unable to immediately pop back up to his feet and celebrate with his teammates after he had just scored a touchdown to give Houston a 7-0 lead over the Saints. Watson’s 2017 season, along with the Texans’ playoff chances, were wrecked when he tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 7. He had looked dynamic in his rookie season, with 19 TD passes, and the Texans were 3-3 at the time. With Watson out for the season, the Texans lost eight of their final nine games to finish 4-12. In 2018, with Watson healthy and starting all 16 games, Houston went 11-5 and made the playoffs. You see the pattern here, which is not a lot ...

New Yorkers flock to Central Park to play with birds

They were winging it in Central Park Saturday. More than 400 people turned out for the New York City park rangers Raptor Fest, an annual event that aims to inform New Yorkers about the wildlife found in the Big Apple, beyond the concrete jungle. Amidst a few stressed-out children and dogs, eager onlookers could come face-to-face with owls, hawks and eagles. Montana, the bald eagle, was the clear crowd favorite. “The Bald Eagle is the Ace of America!” exclaimed Upper West Side resident Isaiah Wilson, 6. “He’s a hit. People love being able to see one up close,” said Bobby Horvath, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, who noted Montana was rescued out on Long Island. The majority of the birds on display were “non-releasable” birds rescued from the wild, Horvath said. Why some NFL Week 1 hot takes will be so wrong

Week 2 has mercifully arrived to give us a better idea as to how many of our many Week 1 overreactions will have a realistic chance of ringing true. The Dolphins will go 0-16: It took one game for several players to contact their agents about deserting this sinking ship. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is one of them. Prediction: The Fish Tank belongs in the XFL. Or the SEC. Prediction: Tua Tagovailoa. Overreaction? No. The Cowboys are Super Bowl contenders: Dak Prescott is no $40 million quarterback, even if the Giants made him resemble one, but Jerry Jones has no choice but to make his leader happy. The hiring of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, emergence of receiver Michael Gallup and return of tight end Jason Witten have enabled Prescott to take the load off Ezekiel Elliott. The Boys will be battling the Eagles for the NFC East title. Overreaction? No. Same Old Browns: Over Baker Mayfield’s dead body. There’s too much talent, on both sides of the ball, for Freddie Kitchens ...

Bronx man charged with ‘corpse concealment’ for hogtied body

The owner of the Bronx apartment where police discovered a man slashed and bound with duct tape has been arrested in connection with his death, cops said Saturday. Charles Votaw, 37, was charged with assault, concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence. Police were called to Votaw’s apartment on Creston Avenue near Field Place in Fordham Heights on Friday night after a building resident smelled a foul odor and called the cops, according the authorities. Responders found the man, who has not yet been identified, with his legs tied to his waist and slashes to his chest and wrists. He had been bound with duct tape, police said. Votaw was taken into custody Saturday afternoon for questioning. His arraignment was pending Saturday night. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, which may increase the charges, police said. Cleveland fans not ready to start doubting Browns just yet

CLEVELAND — “Believeland” is cautiously living up to its name. For one more week, at least. The hype that had surrounded the Browns leading into Week 1 — on the cover of Sports Illustrated, a trendy Super Bowl pick and the toast of the town in the offseason — took a hit after last Sunday’s 43-13 loss to the Titans, but it has not yet disappeared. This is a city that has experienced losing football seasons in each of the past 11 falls, and 18 of the past 20, but a season-opening loss has not set off all the alarms and whistles just yet. “Honestly, I didn’t feel the ‘Oh no,’ ” Dwane, a Browns fan since 1980, said this week outside the team’s pro shop at FirstEnergy Stadium. “It didn’t feel like, ‘Maybe next year.’ That was our saying for years. I didn’t get that in my soul that it was maybe next year. I think everybody still believes they can do something.” Coach Freddie Kitchens said early in the week that “what we have to refrain from doing right now is overreacting,” and most Brow...

J.D. Davis homers in loss — and admits to Mets’ scoreboard watching

J.D. Davis was one of few Mets to have success Friday night against Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw, but his first-inning home run was wasted in a 9-2 loss to the Dodgers. Kershaw, the three-time National League Cy Young Award winner, improved to 10-0 with a 2.19 ERA in 15 career regular-season starts against the Mets with 6 ¹/₃ innings of two-run ball. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Kershaw is the second pitcher in the past 50 years to win his first 10 regular season decisions against the Mets, joining Pedro Martinez (10-0 from 1993-97). “I think he just got a feel for that little cutter-slider thing that he has. He was spotting it pretty good,” Davis said. “He had command of his fastball and then he started really feeling for that curveball. He’s just one of those guys, one of those starters, who you know we needed to get on him early and get him before he gets into his groove, like you guys saw. He did Kershaw things.” Pete Alonso wasn’t in the starting lineup because Mick...

Shipping Jarvis Landry to Browns wasn’t personal

Adam Gase and Jarvis Landry still can’t agree, two seasons later. Last year, Landry told ESPN he believes his former coach with the Dolphins sent him to Cleveland “to die.” Gase, the Browns receiver said, would joke about sending players to the Browns if they were in his doghouse, as a form of motivation. Gase on Friday admitted he did it once, which Landry said was untrue. “It wasn’t a one-time joke,” said Landry, who will face his former coach Monday when the Jets play host to the Browns. “We had the 4 p.m. [trade deadline] and we had a team meeting earlier in the day and one of the guys was like, ‘Woah it looks like everybody’s clean, nobody got traded,’ ” the first-year Jets coach recalled. “And [Dolphins general manager Chris] Grier and myself were kind of giving him a hard time. And I slid it in the PowerPoint and it was supposed to be a joke and I think he took it a little serious.” Gase said the trade of Landry in March 2018 for fourth- and seventh-round draft picks wasn’...

Why Mets chose not to start Pete Alonso

The Mets had to think rookie slugger Pete Alonso was pretty gassed to take him out of the lineup Friday night against one of the top left-handed starters in baseball, Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers. “He’s totally fine. We just all felt like he needed an off-day,” Callaway said about not starting Alonso, who pinch-hit for Juan Lagares in the seventh inning of the Mets’ 9-2 loss to the Dodgers and stayed in the game at first. “Talking to everybody, just seeing Pete for the last few days, I think an off-day’s warranted for him. “I think he’s played more games than any rookie, more games than most players. It’s been a lot of games in a row for him. So off, for some of the game, at least.” Callaway believed Alonso’s pitch selection in Thursday’s series-sweeping win over Arizona indicated that he was “fatigued” and needed a break, but the Mets’ manager expects his Rookie of the Year front-runner to start the remaining 15 games of the team’s playoff push beginning Saturday. “No, this is ...

Bills misintepreted my Josh Allen comments

The Bills mined bulletin board material from Pat Shurmur’s assessment of Josh Allen before last year’s draft, when the Giants coach said the quarterback had “a chance to be a starter.” On Friday, Shurmur wasn’t providing the opponent with any new material. “I know what I said and my comments were meant to be positive,” Shurmur said Friday before the Giants face Buffalo on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. “I can’t control how some people will interpret them. … My comments were meant to basically give praise. They were interpreted differently.” Olivier Vernon will return to MetLife Stadium on Monday night — to face the Jets — for the first time since being shipped to Cleveland in March’s Odell Beckham Jr. trade. But the Giants’ former defensive end/linebacker hopes to catch up with some of his former teammates first. “If I have time, yeah. I don’t know if I can go in that building or anything like that,” Vernon said. “I got cool ties with all the guys that were over there. It was all lov...
