Yankees complete sweep of Red Sox as injury concerns grow

The Yankees are on pace to have more than enough wins to get to the postseason. Whether they have enough healthy players to do anything when they get there remains to be seen. During yet another victory over the reeling Red Sox, the Yankees saw Gio Urshela pound two foul balls of his legs in the sixth and leave two innings later and then Gleyber Torres leave the game in the eighth for an with a core issue and went to the hospital for tests. Still, they hung on for a fifth straight win and finished off a sweep of their rivals with a 7-4 victory in front of another sellout in The Bronx. It got the Yankees to a season-high 33 games over .500 (72-39), but they also saw Aaron Hicks go on the injured list with a right flexor strain, joining what amounts to more than half a roster on the IL. “Throw out the record, I don’t remember this many people — obviously significant people — having missed serious time for us,’’ Aaron Boone said before the game. “Credit to them across the board that...

Ryan Lochte wins national championship in return from ban

STANFORD, Calif. — Ryan Lochte won the 200-meter individual medley at the U.S. national championships, fresh off a 14-month ban. The 12-time Olympic medalist touched in 1 minute, 57.76 seconds on Sunday — 1.07 ahead of runner-up Shaine Casas — to earn his first national title since 2014. Lochte’s time was quicker than his time-trial effort of 1:57.88 in the event four days earlier, which didn’t toward qualifying for the national team. It was the lone victory and only final of the five-day meet for Lochte, who turned 35 a day earlier. He finished 37th in the 200 freestyle preliminaries, fourth in the C final of the 100 butterfly, and scratched the B final of the 100 backstroke. Lochte was competing for the first time since the recent end of a 14-month suspension for receiving an infusion of vitamin B-12 above the allowable limit. Am I out of date with my management style?

I’ve been searching for a management position since last year and have received a request for only one interview. I used to manage a team of 15, but since I’ve been out for a while, I’m not sure if I’m in touch with what makes a good manager for today’s workforce. What’s your advice for handling this in the interview process? The one constant in the workplace is the human element. Despite all the technological advances, people still are just people. What motivates and engages people hasn’t changed either, despite what the media would have you believe about millennials or Gen Z. People want to be respected and given the opportunity to do meaningful work; to be recognized and rewarded for the work they do and to feel they are part of something bigger — some vision or mission. Those qualities are timeless, so articulating your understanding of that will demonstrate that you are a manager for all seasons. I preferred to be a big fish in a small pond, working for smaller companies rather...

These are the victims of the Dayton mass shooting

A mom of two studying to be a nurse, a graduate student learning to care for cancer survivors — and the shooter’s own sister — were among the victims of the Dayton, Ohio, massacre. Connor Betts, 24, killed nine people when he opened fire on a packed street lined with bars and restaurants around 1 a.m., including his little sister, 22-year-old Megan Betts, his youngest victim, authorities said. It is unclear whether Megan was an intended target, they said. Megan Betts was an environmental-science student at Wright State University and set to graduate next year, according to her Facebook page. Logan Turner, who previously attended the college, also was killed, authorities said. “Sweet and smart” Turner had just celebrated his 30th birthday Tuesday and was out with friends at the time of the shooting, his mother, Danita Turner, told WHIO-TV. “He was very generous and loving and the world’s best son,” she said. Another victim was nursing student Lois Oglesby, 27, who left behind a n...

Univision heads for auction with few suitors

Univision is trying to sell itself again — and investors are bracing for yet another long, dragged-out telenovela. In the middle of last month, the Spanish-language TV network quietly gathered a select group of prospective suitors in New York as it sought a price tag north of $10 billion, sources told The Post. But after sifting through more than 100 pages of confidential financial information, the group of media companies and buyout firms appears to have taken a pass, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. Now, Univision is in “the very early stages” of a formal auction process with a “strict timetable” that’s being run by Morgan Stanley, Moelis & Co. and LionTree, an insider said. The banks, however, haven’t set a bidding deadline, sources said. In the coming weeks, prospective bidders will face a tough question: As Univision tries to wean itself from tear-jerking soap operas and game shows hosted by women in tight dresses, can it remake itself into a ...

Alejandro Bedoya challenges Congress on gun violence after goal

WASHINGTON — Alejandro Bedoya made a statement about gun violence in the nation’s capital. After scoring the opening goal in the Philadelphia Union’s 5-1 victory over D.C. United on Sunday night, Bedoya ran to an on-field microphone and shouted to the crowd: “Hey Congress, do something now! End gun violence! Let’s go!” Bedoya earlier tweeted about recent gun violence in Texas and Ohio that killed 29 people. The 32-year-old Bedoya has played for the U.S. national team. Bedoya first-timed a right-footer off the post into the net to give Philadelphia (12-7-6) the lead in the third minute. Union goalkeeper played a clearance into the left side of the attacking half where Andrew Wooten won the ball from defender Donovan Pines and crossed it to Marco Fabián, who fed Bedoya for the finish from just outside the box. Husband confirmed dead after wife died shielding son in shooting

The husband of the young mom shot dead as she shielded her baby boy from the El Paso gunman, was also killed in the massacre, his brother said Sunday night. Family and friends of Andre Anchondo looked for him for nearly a day after Saturday’s mass shooting at the Texas Walmart. At around 6:30 p.m., Andre’s brother Tito Anchondo wrote on Facebook: “It’s official……he’s gone.” Andre, 24, and his 25-year-old wife Jordan Anchondo had just dropped off her 6-year-old daughter at cheerleading practice when they went to the Walmart with their 2-month-old son to buy school supplies and party decorations. The parents of three had just marked their first wedding anniversary and were invited to a big bash on Saturday, Tito Anchondo told The Washington Post from his home, earlier on Sunday. They never made it. Patrick Crusius, 21, turned the store into a slaughterhouse when he opened fire with a rifle, killing 20 people. Several hours after the shooting, Anchondo said authorities asked him t...

Grandparents of alleged El Paso shooter are ‘devastated’

The grandparents of the man who allegedly slaughtered 20 people inside an El Paso Walmart said they were “devastated” on Sunday, offering prayers to the victims. Larry Brown and Cynthia Brown released a statement about Saturday’s mass shooting allegedly perpetrated by their grandson — 21-year-old Patrick Crusius — who is being treated as a “domestic terrorist.” “We are devastated of the events of El Paso and pray for the victims of this tragedy,” the statement said. “Patrick Crusius is our grandson.  He lived with us in our house in Allen, Texas while he attended Collin County College.” They added, “He moved out of our house six weeks ago and spent few nights here while we were out of town.” Crusius allegedly opened fire in the crowded Walmart near the Mexican border on Saturday, killing 20 and wounding 26 others. Investigators believe a racist manifesto posted online in the hours before the shooting was penned by Crusius. The grandparents explained that the shooters driver...

Couple, Mexican nationals among the killed in El Paso shooting

A married couple in their sixties — who was in El Paso shopping for the day — was among the Mexican nationals killed in the Walmart shooting, their daughter says. “These have been very difficult hours,” wrote Sandra Ivonne Cerros, daughter of Sarah Esther Reglado and Cerros Hernández, on Facebook. “Right now we are together and dealing with our pain,” she said, adding that the family was “devastated” by the loss. The deaths of Reglado, 66, and Hernández, 68, were confirmed by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Sunday afternoon. Cerros said she was informed earlier in the day. “We thank you infinitely for your prayers, your support, concern, calls and messages, they have been a great company during this crisis,” wrote Cerros. “We ask you to give us time to assimilate what happened, today we want to reserve ourselves from answering calls and messages, we have your understanding.” The couple’s granddaughter, Vielka Yu, had turned to Facebook after losing contact with them on...

Pedophile beaten and drowned in prison cell toilet bowl: reports

A pedophile was allegedly drowned in his Florida prison cell toilet after being beaten by a cellmate, according to a report. Convicted child molester David Oseas Ramirez, 56, was found dead in his cell in Jacksonville’s Duval County Jail last Tuesday allegedly after being beaten and drowned in the toilet bowl, according to First Coast News. He was serving life for lewd and lascivious molestation of an 11-year-old girl — with his 2013 jury taking less than 15 minutes to find him guilty, according to Newsweek. The attack was witnessed by a third inmate and also captured on surveillance cameras, which has not been released, the station said. A Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death. Cellmate Paul Dixon, 43, was arrested on suspicion of Ramirez’s murder, authorities announced. He was already serving life for a murder from when he was 17. “A verbal altercation became physical. The suspect killed the victim in his cell,” Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a sta...

How Edwin Diaz is handling threat of Mets demotion

PITTSBURGH — Earlier this season, Edwin Diaz intimated to a person in the Mets clubhouse that pitching in New York was maybe “too much” for him. Diaz, a quiet 25-year-old, had never endured this level of scrutiny pitching for the Mariners, for whom he emerged as an All-Star last season and finished with 57 saves and a 1.96 ERA. His Mets career hasn’t transpired nearly as smoothly. Now struggling to keep the closer’s job, Diaz was asked Sunday if the experience of pitching in New York is different on him mentally than it was performing in Seattle. In other words, is New York “too much” for him? “Not at all,” Diaz said. “I feel the game is the same anywhere. There are going to be highs and lows and we just keep working to get better.” Diaz, who is 1-6 with a 5.44 ERA with five blown saves in 29 opportunities, wasn’t needed in the Mets’ 13-2 beatdown of the Pirates on Sunday. But manager Mickey Callaway has for the first time acknowledged that Seth Lugo might have to pick up some of ...

AOC and ‘The Squad’ shown as clowns in new GOP attack ad

The Republican Party is rolling out an attack ad Monday targeting New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other insurgent congressional freshman known as “The Squad” to paint them as clownish standard-bearers for the Democratic Party ahead of the 2020 congressional elections, The Post has learned. The ads will be used first against Democrat Dan McCready who is in a closely watched special congressional election on Sept. 10 in North Carolina, against Republican Dan Bishop. The National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee and the Bishop campaign are bankrolling the TV ad, which begins airing Monday, showing the faces of AOC, and fellow firebrands, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, of Michigan, superimposed on inflatable clowns. There are other Democratic figures depicted as clowns in the ad — including presidential candidates Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. But AOC ...

Dayton mass shooter once wrote a ‘hit-list’ on HS bathroom wall

The Dayton mass shooting suspect was once suspended from high school for writing a “hit-list” on a bathroom wall and causing a lockdown, a report says. Connor Betts’ former principal, Chris Baker, confirmed his suspension to the Dayton Daily News — saying, “I would not dispute that information.” He refused to speak further on what happened. “I don’t want to get involved any more than just making that comment,” Baker told the local paper. A woman who attended Bellbrook High School with Betts, 24, said she remembered the hit-list vividly. “I guessed it might’ve been him just from that list,” she said, refusing to be identified. “I know he made the list,” the woman added. “I’m not sure who the names were on there … He had a plan to shoot up the school.” The former classmate said Betts had been bullied in high school, but eventually seemed “pretty normal” after getting “some help.” Another person who went to Bellbrook with the young man described him as “a little bit of an oddball...

Yankees get Didi Gregorius injury news they want to hear

Right now, the Yankees may have more talent on the injured list than the starting lineup. But Didi Gregorius brought some balance. Following a week in which Luke Voit, Aaron Hicks and Edwin Encarnacion joined the crowded Yankees injured list, Gregorius avoided the same fate, and returned to the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox after missing the previous three games with a finger injury on his left hand. Gregorius, who had been out since suffering a strain between his ring and pinkie fingers while fielding a ground ball in Wednesday’s win over the Diamondbacks, took grounders and batting practice in between Saturday’s day-night doubleheader against Boston, and reported no discomfort. Aaron Boone had considered using Gregorius during Saturday’s nightcap, but opted to rest the shortstop another 24 hours. “My understanding is, when he went out and took ground balls and everything in between games, all went well,” Boone said. “When I talked to him [Saturday] night...

Raccoon freed from storm grate by 10 first responders

A raccoon got his head stuck in a storm grate in Massachusetts — and it took a team of 10 first responders more than two hours to free him from the situation, according to reports. Photos posted by the Newton Fire Department show the furry critter’s head poking through a small square hole in the grate as he anxiously gripped the metal frame Thursday. “We were able to rescue a juvenile raccoon today with help from Waltham’s Animal Control. He had been stuck for a while but we are happy to report he is free!!!” the department tweeted , adding: “We rescue citizens both big and small!!!” But it was a big effort to free the little creature. A crew of four firefighters first tried rubbing the raccoon’s head with dish soap, in the hopes that he would “slip out,” Newton Fire Lt. Phil McCully told NBC News. “This method usually works 90 percent of the time,” said McCully. But not in this case. So the firefighters removed the grate from the sidewalk, thinking the animal might be able to ...

Mets’ Pete Alonso changes his look in effort to break slump

PITTSBURGH — Pete Alonso’s second-half slump finally screamed loudly enough to warrant a “mental day” for the Mets first baseman Sunday. The rookie slugger is in an 11-for-73 (.151) skid since the All-Star break with four homers and 30 strikeouts. Todd Frazier shifted to first base for his initial start of the season at the position. Alonso entered as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning of the Mets’ 13-2 victory over the Pirates, but didn’t have an at-bat. “Petey is getting a mental day off today and that’s a good thing for him,” hitting coach Chili Davis said. “Just relax a little bit. He didn’t get an All-Star break. He was mentally involved in the All-Star Game. Just giving him a little break, I think it will help.” Alonso won the Home Run Derby in Cleveland and then participated in the next day’s All-Star Game. Manager Mickey Callaway also gave Alonso a mental day two weeks ago in San Francisco. Alonso responded by coming off the bench to hit a three-run homer. “[Pit...

Rep. Will Hurd says he’s retiring to diversify the GOP

WASHINGTON – Rep. Will Hurd, the only black Republican in the House of Representatives, said he’s retiring from Congress to work toward diversifying the party. “I’m interested in helping other candidates like me,” the Texas lawmaker said Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “I want to see a Republican Party that has more folks that look and sound and operate like I do.” Hurd name-dropped Wesley Hunt, a black Republican running to take back a seat representing a part of Houston that Democrats won in 2018. Hurd suggested he’d help Hunt win that race. “Congressman, you know the way to do that is to stay, to raise money, to campaign alongside and say, ‘He’s joining me’ not ‘I’m leaving and he needs to replace me,’ ” pointed out CBS News’ Major Garrett. Hurd disagreed, saying that the “end all or be all” isn’t being a member of Congress. “The party is defined by the people who are in it, not necessarily the politicians,” Hurd said. “And so this gives me the freedom and flexibility...

Trump crashes another wedding at his New Jersey golf resort

This is getting to be a regular thing. President Trump crashed yet another wedding at his Bedminster, N.J., resort Saturday night. Social media postings show the president standing next to a beaming bride, smiling and waving at wedding guests. “The bride and groom and their guests even got to meet the President and First Lady as they were having dinner on their property!” gushed a post Sunday from a wedding photographer. That posting showed the president and First Lady Melania Trump posing with the bride and groom, identified as Alyssa and Alexander, and their family. Wedding guests can be heard chanting ”U-S-A” in a video post showing the president. Two weeks ago, Trump made a guest appearance at the “Make America Great Again” themed wedding of Staten Island couple Nicole Perosi and PJ Mongelli. Trump embraced the bride and groom in a hug as the crowd roared its approval, then erupted into “USA! USA!” chants. The president has also crashed weddings at his exclusive ...
