Elliott, Jones use shirt to put Cowboys contract quip behind them

FRISCO, Texas — Another day around the Cowboys, another dog-and-pony show. The day after the Cowboys came to contract terms with running back Ezekiel Elliott, who spoke to reporters after practice Wednesday, bombastic team owner Jerry Jones conducted a carnival-like press conference at the team facility Thursday. Jones wasn’t in Texas on Wednesday to talk about the six-year, $90 million contract extension he gave to Elliott, because he was at the New York Stock Exchange to ring the bell on a $2.2 billion acquisition of Covey Park Energy. It was at the NYSE where Jones said a security guard chided him for signing Elliott before Sunday’s season opener against the Giants. “The main security guy looked over in the window and said, ‘Did you have to sign him right before you played us,’ ’’ Jones said Thursday. “I thought it might have been a real first to have that whole New York Stock Exchange buzz over Zeke Elliott’s agreement with the Dallas Cowboys,’’ Jones said. “We just put a dou...

TSA had its 9 busiest days ever this summer

WASHINGTON — The Transportation Security Administration says the nine busiest days in its history occurred this summer as travelers jammed airports. TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Patricia Cogswell said Thursday that the agency screened 262 million people and 164 million checked bags from just before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day. That’s up 3.4% from last summer. Of the nine hectic days, the peak was July 7, when TSA screened nearly 2.8 million airline passengers and crew members. Cogswell says TSA hired enough screeners, although the agency didn’t give numbers, and worked with airlines to anticipate where screeners would be needed. TSA has struggled with turnover — about one-fifth of screeners leave every year. The agency has countered with retention bonuses. It was created in 2001 after the 9/11 terror attacks. Brian Moran strikes out younger brother in his big-league debut

Oh, brother! Marlins lefty reliever Brian Moran struck out his brother, Colin, in the pitcher’s major league debut during Thursday night’s game against the Pirates. The 30-year-old, who starred at Iona Prep, entered the game in the fourth inning and froze his brother on a 3-2 slider. They became the first siblings in MLB history to face each other in a pitcher-batter scenario with one of the brothers making his debut, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Brian hadn’t given up on his big-league dream, bouncing around the minors and the independent leagues before finally getting the call. As for Colin, the 26-year-old third baseman came into the game with a .286 average, to go with 17 home runs and 77 RBIs. He has played in the big leagues for four seasons. During an interview on “Intentional Talk,” earlier in the series, Colin and Brian joked about the potential for this brotherly battle. “I know if I face him, I’m going to try to take him deep,” Colin said. “I wouldn’t expect any...

Jeffrey Katzenberg’s video startup Quibi loses Janice Min

A second top executive of Hollywood mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg’s short-form video startup has abruptly left ahead of the company’s launch next year. Janice Min, best known for turning around trade publication The Hollywood Reporter, left Quibi Wednesday — without explanation. Her exit marks the second big departure months ahead of Quibi’s launch as it follows last month’s exit of Tim Connolly, the head of partnerships and advertising. While it’s unclear why Min left, sources said the former Us Weekly editor-in-chief, who held the role of Quibi’s news content chief, bumped heads with a demanding Katzenberg. “Janice was brought in to be a tastemaker, but Jeffrey is the ultimate tastemaker when it comes to the company,” one source told The Post. “I saw firsthand the difficulty of his strong-held opinions about what he thinks is going to work. There’s no diplomacy about that. That’s a style that can rub people the wrong way.” While Katzenberg “isn’t a screamer,” he’s a “strong-willed mi...

Support for Total Wine & More is waning in Queens

A feisty group of mom-and-pop retailers and some flip-flopping legislators are trying to thwart one of the nation’s biggest wine and liquor chains from opening in Queens, The Post has learned. Total Wine & More, which already has one store in Long Island, is facing a flood of opposition to its application to open a second store in a long vacant Toys ‘R’ Us space in College Point, Queens. Among the critics are a growing number of the nearly 30 legislators who originally agreed to support Total Wine’s newest store — but who changed their minds following a barrage of complaints from smaller liquor and wine retailers, according to documents and sources. Among the lawmakers changing their tune are State Assembly members Andrew Hevesi of Forest Hills, Ron Kim of Flushing and David Weprin of Richmond Hill — all of whom have fired off letters to the New York State Liquor Authority withdrawing their support. “It seemed innocuous at the time and I hadn’t been fully informed of the pros ...

Mock monk slaps phone from pic-taking man’s hand in Times Square

A flimflamming monk slapped the cellphone out of the hand of a New Jersey man Thursday when he tried to snap a pic of the faux friar in Times Square, cops said. The unholy encounter happened on Broadway near West 44th Street just before 5 p.m. when the Jersey man tried to take a picture of the Queens man dressed up in a monk’s garb, according to cops. Apparently, 55-year-old Zhang Zheshen didn’t want his photo taken — so he knocked the phone of the man’s hand, the NYPD said. Zheshen was known to cops as a Times Square scammer who would rip off tourists by placing a cheap bracelet on a person’s wrist and demanding money, police sources told The Post. The mock monk was arrested after the altercation and charged with misdemeanor assault, cops said. Rodoins Kurucs legal issues could turn Nets to Carmelo Anthony

The Nets have the world’s best power forward, but when camp opens later this month that position will be by far their biggest problem — with three of their four veterans at the spot facing either injury or suspension. That’s the kind of week it’s been for Brooklyn. Kevin Durant’s Achilles will sideline the star most if not all of this season, leaving Rodions Kurucs or Taurean Prince to try to fill the huge KD-sized void in the starting lineup. But now Prince is the last man standing to fill that starter’s spot — and doesn’t have an experienced backup — after Wilson Chandler got suspended Aug. 29 for PEDs and Kurucs finds himself facing suspension for alleged behavior of a far worse sort. Kurucs was in Brooklyn criminal court Tuesday on a misdemeanor assault charge after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in June. He’s due back in court just two days before the Oct. 23 season opener, with myriad questions left to be answered between now and then. Prince didn’t have any of those a...

Meredith Corp. stock drops after rough Time Inc. merger

A rocky integration of the Time Inc. titles, a lack of plans to sell it TV stations, and lowered expectations for the year ahead had Wall Street turning negative on Meredith Corp. on Thursday. The stock took a bashing — falling more than 20 percent. Shares hit a 52-week low of $31.43 in mid-day trading before closing at $33.68, down $10.11 a share, or 23 percent. That came even as its fourth-quarter revenue of $786 million — while down 1.6 percent compared with a year ago — actually beat analysts estimates by $12.97 million. And profit was up in its magazine division. Meredith CEO Tom Harty acknowledged it took longer than anticipated to turn around the ad side of the old Time titles after its $2.8 billion acquisition wrapped up in January 2018. Meredith kept People, InStyle and Real Simple and reaped a one-time gain of $435 million by selling off Time magazine, Fortune and Sports Illustrated. “While it has taken longer than we initially expected to elevate the print and digital p...

Longtime aide in Queens DA office entitled to $319K pension

It pays to prosecute crime. A former longtime top aide in the Queens District Attorney’s Office was entitled to receive a maximum pension of $319,494, according to a new report from the Empire Center for Public Policy. Eileen Sullivan, 67, served as executive assistant DA to the late Queens DA Richard Brown and retired in August 2017. Sullivan has since returned to work at the DA’s office part-time while collecting her pension to help on special projects and personnel and budget issues, said an office spokeswoman. But the spokesperson said the $319,494 figure cited in the report was “inaccurate” and “substantially more” than the pension that Sullivan receives — but did not say what it was. Sullivan worked for 42 years in city and state government, including over 30 years in the DA’s office. She was in a more generous pension plan because she was hired before 1978 and she made more contributions toward her pension than required, the spokesperson said. A total of 1,108 retirees i...

Taekwondo is secret behind uncanny skillset

There is a lot more working for Pete Alonso than pure polar bear strength. His balanced swing has catapulted him to the major league home run lead with 45 as the Mets host the Phillies on Friday night at Citi Field for the first of three games. Growing up, Alonso said he studied taekwondo, the art of unarmed self-defense characterized by the extensive use of kicks, and he believes that has helped him become the gifted ballplayer he has developed into in his amazing rookie season. It really helps with plays at first base where he has shown the ability to hang onto the bag on wide throws just long enough to record the out, saving infielders from throwing errors. Alonso has one of the longest stretches in the game and catches throws far out in front of the bag. The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder has mastered the split at first base to get runners out by the slimmest of margins. When asked about his ability to snare throws, contorting his body at different angles, Alonso revealed the deeper s...

3-year-old dies after doctors misdiagnose her with constipation

A 3-year-old UK girl who was repeatedly misdiagnosed with constipation died from stomach cancer, according to a report. Aoife Flanagan-Gibb of Essex passed away July 7, just days after her family finally received the correct diagnosis, the Mirror reported. “She’d been in and out of the hospital with different infections and problems but they kept telling us she had common child constipation,” her mom, Eilish Flanagan, told the outlet. Flanagan said she brought the child to doctors nearly a dozen times to find out what was ailing her. “She’d been in and out of the hospital with different infections and problems but they kept telling us she had common child constipation,” Flanagan told the outlet. Five days after doctors correctly diagnosed her, she died in her mother’s arms in the hospital, the outlet reported. “It was completely unexpected. She had a huge cardiac arrest,” her mom told the outlet. “I held her because I knew something was wrong with her. She died in my arms.” Cr...

Who wins the AFC South?

Post columnist Mark Cannizzaro breaks down each team and every division in the NFC as part of our 2019 NFL preview: 1. Jacksonville Jaguars Coach: Doug Marrone 2018 record: 5-11 O/U wins: 8 Key additions: QB Nick Foles, TE Geoff Swaim, WR Chris Conley Key losses:  QB Blake Bortles, WR Donte Moncrief, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins First-and-goal: Can new QB Nick Foles perform for the Jags the way he did for the Eagles in his super-sub role? First-rounder Josh Allen could be a double-digit sacker on a menacing defensive line that features Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue. Jalen Ramsey is arguably the best cornerback in the NFL. Uberathletic LB Myles Jack can cover ground quickly. Fourth-and-long: The Jags O-line was a problem last season and a reason behind their 31st-ranked scoring offense (15.3 points per game). Receiver could be a problem for the Jags, who don’t have the game-breakers Foles had in Philly like Alshon Jeffrey and Zach Ertz. Marqise Lee and Dede Westbr...

Tom Hiddleston leads Broadway revival

This a pretty low-key move for Loki. Tom Hiddleston, who plays the pale Marvel villain on-screen, is making his Broadway debut in an intimate, no-fuss revival of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal,” which opened Thursday night. No #Hiddlebum is bared here, as it famously was on TV’s “The Night Manager,” but boy, can this beanstalk Brit heat up a drafty old theater. It helps that this drama is about a sexy, 7-year-long love triangle with multiple infidelities. The story moves backward, like “Memento,” with Emma (Zawe Ashton) telling Jerry (Charlie Cox) that her husband finally learned of their affair, two years after it ended. Even more complicated is that the hubby, Robert (Hiddleston), is Jerry’s BFF. Later, we see the illicit couple canoodling in the London love nest they pay for together. There are also glimpses of the trio sharing wine together, tiptoeing around treacherous information that could potentially obliterate two families. If it didn’t come with the Pinter seal of snobbery, Su...

Couple vandalized thousand year old Native American gathering place

Cops are looking for this pair of jerks who scrawled a heart and other graffiti at a sacred Native American site — and then proudly posed for a selfie with their handiwork and posted it on Instagram, authorities said. The man and woman believed to be in their 20s desecrated a 425 million year old rock formation known as the Council Overhang in Illinois’ Starved Rock State Park on Monday, the Journal Star reported. “It’s disrespectful,” said Park Superintendent Kerry Novak. “If you bring your family here, you want to see a beautiful natural area. You don’t want to see this sort of thing.” The pair apparently posted to Instagram a photo of themselves in front of their alleged graffiti, prompting an investigation by Illinois Conservation Police. The image shows the man giving a peace sign and the woman in purple leggings and a matching tank top facing the graffiti, which included a black heart with “B+K” written inside. It is not clear from the photo what the pair allegedly used to...

Fotis Dulos’ girlfriend says she helped him clean ‘coffee spill’

The woman charged alongside her boyfriend in the case of missing Connecticut mom Jennifer Dulos has admitted to cops that she helped him clean a truck — but she claims she thought they were dealing with a “coffee spill,” according to an arrest warrant. Michelle Troconis — who was rearrested on a fresh charge of tampering with evidence Thursday — said that on the afternoon of Jennifer’s May 24 disappearance she saw Fotis Dulos cleaning what he told her was coffee from a red Toyota pickup belonging to his employee, the warrant states. Fotis allegedly handed her a stained rag to put in a garbage bag,  and though Troconis, 44, claimed not to remember what color the stain was, “she admitted that it did not smell of coffee,” according to her and Fotis’ warrant. She acknowledged putting a “coffee stained” paper towel in a black garbage bag — similar to the ones authorities believe she and Fotis, Jennifer’s 51-year-old estranged husband, threw away later that evening. Both Fotis ...

Serena Williams ties record in making 2019 US Open final

Serena Williams tied some history on Thursday, and is on the precipice of even more. The 37-year-old American dispatched fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-1, in the first semifinal at the 2019 US Open, marking Williams’ 101st win at the tournament, tying her with Chris Evert for the most all-time. The eighth-seeded Williams earned a measure of revenge with the win over Svitolina, who emerged victorious in their last meeting in 2016 at the Rio Olympics. Now the top remaining seed in the women’s bracket, Williams awaits the winner of the Belinda Bencic-Bianca Andreescu semi in the US Open final. A US Open singles title would give Williams the 24th grand slam of her career, tying her with Margaret Court for the WTA record. Judge wants ‘mini trial’ in Dov Hikind’s Twitter suit against AOC

The federal judge presiding over ex-Assemblyman Dov Hikind’s lawsuit against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — for blocking him from her Twitter account — wants lawyers in the case to duke it out in a “mini trial” later this month. Brooklyn federal Judge Frederic Block called Hikind’s lawsuit against Ocasio-Cortez a “matter of public interest” and told lawyers for both parties to bring “whatever you want” to a Sept. 26 hearing that will help him make an “intelligent decision” on whether the suit can move forward. Hikind claims in his suit that that the freshman representative has run afoul of his First Amendment rights. “Whatever you want,” Block said. “Live witnesses, dead witnesses. I need the facts.” Hikind says in his suit that Ocasio-Cortez blocked him for “opinions he expressed.” Ocasio-Cortez recently said at a rally that she blocks fellow Twitter users to avoid getting harassed, not because of users’ political views. “All in all, although it’s clear Ocasio-Cortez won’t be ...

De Blasio proposes ‘robot tax’ to save American jobs

Mayor de Blasio hopes to inject new life into his sputtering 2020 presidential bid — with a new “robot tax” he says can save American jobs. The plan, laid out in a “Wired” op-ed Thursday, would tax companies that don’t provide positions for workers displaced by technology. The companies would be hit with a one-time tax in an amount equal to five years worth of payroll taxes for each pink-slipped employee. The resulting revenue would go to “job-creating infrastructure, public works, and public service investments that hire those displaced workers.” De Blasio writes that “36 million American jobs are likely to be automated out of existence in the coming decades.” He credits Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates with first proposing the robot tax in 2017. The long-shot presidential contender — who admitted Wednesday that he’ll probably drop out of the race if he doesn’t make the October Democratic primary debate — would also create a new layer of bureaucracy to regulate automation. The ...
