SEC probe taps incoming Caesars Entertainment chief

Tom Reeg, the soon-to-be head of Caesars Entertainment, has been slapped with a subpoena in a Security and Exchange Commission trading probe, The Post has learned. Reeg, chief executive of Eldorado Resorts — which is in the process of buying Caesars in a $17 billion merger — received the subpoena in May along with two other Eldorado board members and one Eldorado executive, the company revealed in a regulatory filing Tuesday. The filing said the SEC was seeking information about trading in a publicly traded company tied to Eldorado board member James Hawkins, who also received a subpoena. The company whose stock they traded is MRI-maker IRadimed, where Hawkins is a director, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. IRadimed didn’t respond to a request for comment. Eldorado told Caesars about the subpoenas in June, saying the executives had not been notified of any allegation of wrongdoing, according to the filing. The subpoenas, while revealed deep in the 475-p...

Kroger asks shoppers to stop openly carrying guns in stores

Kroger is following Walmart’s lead. The Ohio-based supermarket giant on Tuesday asked customers to stop openly carrying firearms in their stores, just hours after Walmart made a similar request. “Kroger is respectfully asking that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores, other than authorized law enforcement officers,” Jessica Adelman, group vice president of corporate affairs, said in a statement. “We are also joining those encouraging our elected leaders to pass laws that will strengthen background checks and remove weapons from those who have been found to pose a risk for violence.” In its statement, Walmart requested that their customers not openly carry firearms. In an open letter from CEO Doug McMillon to employees the chain also said it would stop selling some types of ammunition. The change came in the wake of several mass shootings — including one last month at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart that left 22 people dead. Kroger stopped selling guns last year....

Long Island Bloods member pleads guilty to 2007 shooting

A reputed member of the Bloods gang from Long Island who goes by “Live Wire” and “Debo” has pleaded guilty to the 2007 drive-by shooting death of a 15-year-old as the boy was leaving an anti-crime rally. Trendell Walker, 31, has copped to killing Alvin Brothers while the boy was at a “Night Out Against Crime” rally at a park in Bellport on Aug. 7, 2007. The day prior to the slaying, assailants had assaulted and attempted to rob Walker and he had traveled to Bellport with other Bloods members to get revenge on his attackers, according to the US Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn. Walker saw Brothers standing with several other youths and opened fire on the group, according to a news release from the office. “Today’s plea demonstrates the Department’s unwavering commitment to holding accountable gang members like defendant Walker who show complete disregard for human life,” US Attorney Richard Donoghue said in the release. Walker initially pleaded not guilty to shooting Brothers after h...

Pentagon to divert $3.6B in funds for border wall projects

The defense secretary on Tuesday approved a border-wall spending plan that will divert funds from more than 100 military construction projects to earmark $3.6 billion for constructing a wall on the southern border with Mexico. The plan to allocate money for the border wall will take funds from some 127 existing military projects, according to the Pentagon. It’s not clear which projects will be affected. The existing plans are being “deferred,” not canceled, said Pentagon Comptroller Elaine McCusker, but there is no guarantee that Congress will vote to replenish the now under-funded projects. In a letter to Congress announcing the spending plan, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he “determined that 11 military construction projects along the international border with Mexico, with an estimated total cost of $3.6 billion, are necessary to support the use of the armed forces in connection with the national emergency.” President Trump declared a national emergency in February so he cou...

Superyacht blocking Statue of Liberty is for sale for $106M

If you don’t like that superyacht obstructing your perfect view of Lady Liberty, there’s a solution — buy it. You just need $106 million. The 240-foot custom-built superyacht, owned by Aussie home-loan king John Symond, went up for sale last month and has been floating in and out of the harbor since — including right in front of the Statue of Liberty. “It’s incredibly tacky and tasteless,’’ said Oreste Marrero, a 48-year-old worker with the city’s Department of Homeless Services, during his lunch break in lower Manhattan on Tuesday. Marrero said he was trying to enjoy the famed view without obstruction. No such luck. “Just because you have a lot of money, you get to do that? The Statue of Liberty is a landmark. You can’t dock your yacht in front of it,’’ Marrero said. A woman who identified herself as Jen. P. rode the Staten Island Ferry right past Lady Liberty — and Symond’s yacht — and groused, “We get it, you’re rich.” The 38-year-old legal aide from the Lower East Side added,...

Wedding venue owners admit they were wrong to ban interracial couple

The owners of a Mississippi wedding venue who refused to host an interracial wedding because of their Christian beliefs said on Tuesday they realized it was wrong after meeting with their pastor. Boone’s Camp event hall said in a statement that its owners, Donna and David Russell, were taught to believe interracial marriage is against the Bible’s teachings. “However, after consulting with their pastor and other men of faith, they determined that they were wrong in their belief,” the statement said. The Booneville venue’s refusal to host the wedding went viral after the groom’s sister, LaKambria Welch, confronted one of the owners in a video first reported by Deep South Voice, a news and commentary website. “We don’t do gay weddings or mixed race, because of our … Christian belief,” the proprietor can be heard saying in the footage. A since-deleted apology was posted to the venue’s Facebook page on Sunday. The owners also apologized to the couple personally. “Boone’s Camp is sorr...

Hurricane Dorian slowly makes its way to five states

More than 2 million people in five Southeastern states continued to clear out Tuesday as a weakened but still potent Hurricane Dorian inched toward the coast after a weeklong tease. While the Category 2 monster is expected to remain off shore, forecasters said Dorian, now creeping along at 7 mph after stalling over the Bahamas, will still bring tropical-force winds and cause dangerous storm surges of up to seven feet along the mainland. Conditions began deteriorating along the Florida coast late Tuesday and were expected to worsen overnight as the storm moved within 100 miles of Fort Pierce. “Tropical storm-force winds have been observed from Jacksonville to near Miami as the outer bands of Dorian track over Florida,” AccuWeather said. States of emergency remained in effect along coastal zones in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia. “Hurricane Dorian is a serious storm and current predictions indicate it may affect parts of Virginia,” that state’s governor, Ralph Northam...

What Saquon Barkley being named a Giant captain really means

He is just 23 years old and yet an already minted superstar, not only on the field. Everyone wants a piece of Saquon, no last name needed. Fingers hovering over keyboards across the country have scrolled over and selected “Saquon Barkley’’ in fantasy football drafts, taking him off the board with the very first pick. He is the face of the Giants and increasingly a face of the league. This week, he soared to a rarefied height without ever leaving the ground. Barkley was chosen by his peers as one of the seven team captains for the 2019 season, an honor rarely bestowed on individuals after only one year on the job. This is not a science, but players are usually not swayed by talent when casting these votes. Captaincy is earned based on status as a veteran, effort on the field, and how someone comports himself and relates to those around him. This is exceedingly difficult to achieve after only one season, but Barkley has done it. Odell Beckham Jr. in five years never was named a Gian...

De Blasio would rather promote campaign than NYC accolades

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s priorities seemed firmly aligned with his on-life-support presidential campaign Tuesday as he skipped two chances to tout his administration’s accomplishments — for an interview with a niche website. Hizzoner was a no-show at a 1 p.m. Department of Health news conference in Long Island City to announce the end of a historic measles outbreak in Brooklyn that sparked a public health emergency earlier this year. De Blasio also didn’t attend a noon event at City Hall to introduce the first director of the city’s newly created Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes. De Blasio’s whereabouts were a mystery until reporter Terrell Starr tweeted photos of himself and the mayor in the Times Square office of The Root, a website focused on “Black News, Opinions, Politics and Culture.” One photo shows de Blasio admiring the image of former Black Panther and self-professed communist Angela Davis on his interviewer’s T-shirt. “Just interviewed @BilldeBlasio about his 20...

Rams, Jared Goff reach four-year contract extension

It is a busy time for NFL extensions, and Jared Goff has his. The Rams signed their franchise quarterback to a four-year deal, according to multiple reports Tuesday, keeping the 24-year-old in Los Angeles until 2024. The terms of the contract have yet to be announced. The former No. 1 overall pick threw for 32 touchdowns last season, and has blossomed under head coach Sean McVay. The two led the Rams to the Super Bowl LIII, where they lost to the Patriots. When asked of locking up Goff earlier this summer, GM Les Snead told reporters, “Not a matter of if, it’s just when.” Goff’s extension comes as many around the league are working out their own. Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliot, who unlike Goff held out of training camp this summer, is reportedly close to signing an extension. Teen in coma after developing severe lung disease from vaping

A Pennsylvania teenager is in a medically induced coma for a severe lung illness caused by his vaping habit, his parents said. Kevin Boclair, 19, is connected to a heart/lung machine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where doctors said he may need a double lung transplant, his parents told local TV stations. “[Doctors] know it’s vaping,” mom Debbie Boclair told WPVI. The Bloomsburg University student had quit using the e-cigarettes but started again because of their flavor and got hooked, Boclair said to Fox 29. Health officials have warned against using e-cigarettes and other vaping products, which they’ve linked to a rise of breathing illnesses. In July, eight teens with a history of vaping were hospitalized with “seriously damaged lung” at The Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Kevin’s health began deteriorating about two weeks ago, shortly before he was set to start his sophomore year of college. “He was coughing violently enough that he was throwing up. In t...

Serena Williams dominates Qiang Wang to move on

Serena Williams was confident this would be her U.S. Open to win, even before the top four seeds went by the wayside. But her merciless 6-1, 6-0 blitz of Qiang Wang stamped her the odds-on favorite to win the title — and a share of history. “I know when I play someone I know is playing really well I know I have to step it up or go home,” Williams said in an on-court TV interview. “I wasn’t ready (to leave). I knew I had to come out here and play really well.” Williams past her Chinese foe in just 44 minutes, the fastest match at this year’s U.S. Open. She improved to 100-12 all-time at the Open, just one win shy of Chris Evert’s record. And a victory in Thursday’s semifinal would give her a shot at an even bigger mark — Margaret Court’s two-dozen Grand Slam singles crowns. The way Williams rolled, it’s getting harder and harder to picture somebody stopping her. Williams came in close to intimidate her foe, and was never challenged. Wang never even got close to a break point and di...

Ilhan Omar’s husband wants divorce after affair bombshell

MINNEAPOLIS — Rep. Ilhan Omar’s marriage appears to be headed for the rocks, a longtime friend of the couple told The Post. The congresswoman’s husband, Ahmed Hirsi, the source said, is poised to file for divorce after the revelation in a bombshell court filing that she allegedly had an affair with DC political consultant Tim Mynett. The Minnesota congresswoman and her husband allegedly separated in March, and Omar asked Hirsi to divorce her around that time because she didn’t want to file the papers — but Hirsi refused, telling her if she wanted a divorce she should do it herself, said the source, who has known both parties for 20 years. The husband allegedly changed his mind after Tim Mynett’s wife last week filed bombshell divorce papers claiming her spouse was having an affair with the Somali-born US representative — with Hirsi said to be angry he had been made to look the fool by the allegations of an extramarital affair. “I’m surprised he hasn’t filed already,” the source to...

New NYC teachers given book with essay titled ‘Dear White Teacher’

A cadre of newly hired teachers will report to city schools this week following orientation sessions where they were given a book that includes an essay titled “Dear White Teacher,” The Post has learned. But unlike the Department of Education’s controversial “implicit bias” training — which, among other lessons, tells teachers that “racial equity” requires favoring black students over whites — the essay’s message is that white instructors should stop being afraid to discipline black students. Essay author Chrysanthius Lathan blasts white teachers who she says routinely send minority students to “teachers of color” for discipline — because they’re scared of being called racist. “My strength in the classroom does not come from my racial identity, and neither does yours,” wrote Lathan, a former teacher in Portland, Oregon, who now works as an educational consultant. “It comes from the way we treat — and what we expect from — kids and families. It is time for you to take back the powe...

Chilling aerial footage emerges of doomed dive boat

Eerie footage from a US Coast Guard chopper captured the destruction of the diving boat Conception as it burned off the coast of southern California early Monday. Smoke pours from the ravaged craft as the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter flies overhead and rescue boats frantically head toward the scene, according to the footage posted online by a Los Angeles Fox-TV affiliate. Thirty-four people died in the disaster, authorities say.
