4 teens charged with attacking lesbian couple plead not guilty

Four teenage boys accused of viciously attacking a lesbian couple when the pair refused to kiss on a London bus pleaded not guilty on Wednesday. The group — who range in age from 15 to 17 — allegedly harassed Melania Geymonat, 28, and her girlfriend Christine Hannigan, 29, as the couple headed home from a date May 30. The teen suspects sat behind the women on the top level of the double-decker bus around 2:15 a.m. and began asking lewd questions and making comments about the pair’s sexuality, prosecutor Arlene De Silva said in Highbury Corner Youth Court. One of the women tried to “deflect” the obscene remarks — but the teens allegedly continued. They asked the couple to “perform for them” and “tried to get the couple to kiss while calling them names,” De Silva said, according to The Sun. The boys then began throwing coins at the couple — causing one of the women to snap. “Throw another coin and see what happens,” one of the women told the boys, De Silva said. A fight then erup...

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee ends his 2020 presidential bid

Democratic presidential hopeful Jay Inslee announced Wednesday night that he’s dropping out of the race. The Washington governor first shared the news on “The Rachel Maddow Show” telling the MSNBC host , “It’s become clear that I’m not gonna be carrying the ball, I’m not gonna be the president.” Maddow pushed Inslee on his future political ambitions — including if he intends to run again for governor, or if has interest in being somebody’s running mate. But Inslee dodged the questions, saying he’ll release a statement tomorrow laying out his plans. Inslee is the second Democratic presidential candidate is as many weeks to drop out of the still-crowded primary field. Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper ended his run last Thursday. Meet the Giants’ ‘badasses’

CINCINNATI — It has been an eyesore for most of the post-Super Bowl XLVI Era. But lo and behold, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has made good on his vow to build a wall for Eli Manning and Saquon Barkley. Good golly, hog mollie, the offensive line fix is in, and the transformation has been… Credit: Source link The post Meet the Giants’ ‘badasses’ appeared first on Fox USA Live . from Fox USA Live https://ift.tt/2L02coS

Fed Chair Jerome Powell has chance to prove he has guts

On Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome “Jay” Powell will have the chance to prove he has guts. For months, President Trump has been bullying the guy he picked to run the Fed, insisting that the nation needs lower interest rates while, at the same time, saying the US economy is doing just fine. Well, the Kansas City Fed’s annual conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., starts on Thursday, and Powell speaks the next day. He’s the star attraction and the only reason anyone cares about this conference. Will Powell cave in to the president and hint at interest rate cuts in the near future? Will he tell the president to shove it because the Fed functions independently of any political pressure? Or will Powell give some incomprehensible academic speech on the economy that devolves into gibberish and completely avoids the issue of rate cuts, the president and the Fed’s role in the world? If you are looking for an answer from me, you aren’t going to get it. I don’t know what he’ll do. I’ve...

Shirtless man carrying topless, life-sized woman doll freaks out neighborhood

Several Kansas City, Missouri, residents were freaked out Wednesday when they spotted a shirtless man lugging around what appeared to be a topless, unconscious woman — but in reality was just a life-sized doll. Police said they received multiple calls starting around 11:20 a.m., about the suspected creep, who according to one person, looked like he wanted to throw a helpless, half-naked woman off of a bridge in the Garment District of the city. Another caller said the man had dumped a lady on the sidewalk and dragged her over a curb. One person said it looked like the guy was trying to dress the woman, whom he’d slung over his shoulder. While another caller reported he heard the man yelling “Savior!” while holding the lady near the 12th Street Bridge. The ‘woman’ was actually a blow-up doll that the would-be perp said he found in a restaurant dumpster, police said. He told police he carried the doll into nearby woods. Photos from traffic cameras show the half-naked man draggin...

Drinking micro-plastics doesn’t seem risky despite ‘weak’ data: UN

GENEVA — The World Health Organization says the levels of microplastics in drinking water don’t appear to be risky, but that research has been spotty and more is needed into their effects on the environment and health. Microplastics are created when man-made materials break down into tiny particles smaller than about 5 millimeters, although there is no strict scientific definition. In a report published Wednesday, the U.N. health agency said the minuscule plastics are “ubiquitous in the environment” and have been found in drinking water, including both tap and bottled, most likely as the result of treatment and distribution systems. “But just because we’re ingesting them doesn’t mean we have a risk to human health,” said Bruce Gordon, WHO’s coordinator of water, sanitation and hygiene. “The main conclusion is, I think, if you are a consumer drinking bottled water or tap water, you shouldn’t necessarily be concerned.” Gordon acknowledged, however, that the available data is “weak” ...

Bureau of Labor Statistics job numbers won’t please Trump

This is not going to make President Trump happy. But it might make it easier for him to get an interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Wednesday said there were actually 20 percent fewer jobs created in a one-year period that ended earlier this year than the government earlier reported. I’ve been writing for a long time that the BLS’ guesses at job growth turn the monthly employment numbers into a crapshoot. Here’s the proof. The BLS Wednesday put out its “preliminary benchmark” revisions to the employment numbers for March 2018 to March 2019. They show 501,000 fewer jobs than previous reported. According to the BLS, that’s a decline of 0.3 percent. But that percentage is very misleading because it calculates the missing 501,000 jobs as 0.3 percent of the entire workforce of 149.864 million jobs. The really important number — to Trump and the Fed — is this: Without those 501,000 jobs, employment growth last year goes from 2.496 million jobs to j...

NYC eateries don’t want to let go of banned CBD products

Big Apple eateries are having a tough time parting with their consumable CBD products — despite a citywide ban, The Post has learned. Last month, the city’s Health Department forced 15 eateries to destroy food and drinks infused with cannabidiol, or CBD, which doesn’t get you high but is said to relieve pain and anxiety. Eateries including The Bean at 31 Third Ave. in Manhattan, and Toast at 1130 Nostrand Ave. in Brooklyn were paid visits by the agency and forced to destroy their CBD products last month, records show. Despite being warned about the Health Department’s July 1 deadline for months, businesses were hoping to fly under the radar — or at least sell out their inventory before they were caught as shoppers have been stocking up in anticipation of the ban, eatery owners and workers said. Silo Cafe, which also is located on Third Avenue, had to destroy its CBD drinks, chocolate bars and brownies last month, records show, but not before it made 100 percent profit on CBD candi...

President Trump takes payroll tax cut off the table

A payroll tax cut to add money to workers’ pockets was taken off the table Wednesday by President Trump — who said the economy was healthy enough without it. “We don’t need it. We have a strong economy,” the president told reporters at a White House press briefing. Trump also squashed a plan he floated earlier in the week to lower capital-gains taxes by indexing gains to inflation, which would slash what investors pay on profits from the sale of assets. “I’ve studied indexing for a long time and I think it will be perceived — if I do it — as somewhat elitist. I don’t want to do that,” Trump said. Word of the potential tax cuts first emerged Monday in news reports claiming the White House was scrambling for ways to avoid an economic slowdown ahead of the 2020 election. White House officials denied the reports, but Trump on Tuesday said he was considering both the payroll tax move and the changes to taxation of capital gains. A payroll tax cut would return to workers a portion of t...

How Justin Wilson went from forgotten to Mets savior

For the better part of 10 weeks, the Mets were without an essential bullpen piece. Aside from one appearance, they couldn’t call on the player they imagined would be essential to their relief corps. Between April 19 and July 2, Justin Wilson made one appearance. A sore left elbow kept him sidelined. In hindsight, however, that time away may be key to the Mets’ playoff hopes. Without it, Wilson may not have as much left in the tank as he seems to have now as September nears and the Mets battle for a wild-card berth. “That could definitely help. If the innings were up and he pitched healthily all year, and September has kind of taken its toll on somebody, it can definitely make them a little less effective,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “He’s had some time off and he looks better than I’ve ever seen him at this point.” Entering Wednesday night’s game against the Indians at Citi Field, Wilson had allowed just two earned runs over 16 innings spanning 20 appearances since coming off t...

Marcus Stroman exits Mets game with hamstring injury

Marcus Stroman’s first three starts as a Met were underwhelming. His fourth went worse – he was forced to leave because of injury. The former Blue Jay, acquired by the Mets before the trade deadline, departed Wednesday night’s game at Citi Field against the Indians after the fourth inning with left hamstring tightness, leaving heavy lifting for the Mets bullpen. Stroman allowed one run on five hits while he was in there, standing runners in three of his four innings. He now has a 4.58 ERA as a Met, giving up 25 hits in 19.2 innings. Mets’ Robinson Cano takes BP as 2019 return remains in play

Robinson Cano’s season is not dead yet. The Mets’ second baseman and his torn left hamstring took early batting practice Wednesday before the team continued its series with the Indians. If Cano arrives back at Citi Field on Thursday feeling good, he will “run a little bit,” manager Mickey Callaway said. The pregame work was a sudden sign of life from Cano, who went on the injured list Aug. 5 with what appeared likely to be a season-ending injury. But four days later, the 36-year-old said he already was feeling better and that kept the hope alive for him to return this year as the Mets chase a playoff spot. While they could soon have a crowded infield, the Mets certainly would take the version of Cano they were getting right before he tore his hamstring trying to leg out a double in Pittsburgh. In his four most recent games, Cano was 9-for-15 with four doubles and a home run. His six home runs after the All-Star break were two more than he had in the entire first half. Cano’s repla...

Cop urinated on 12-year-old girl at school bus stop

A Cleveland police officer was arrested for allegedly recording himself urinating on a 12-year-old girl while she was waiting for her school bus, according to a report. Officer Solomon Nhiwatiwa, 34, drove up to the minor last Friday in Euclid, Ohio and first tried to kidnap her, asking if she’d like a ride to school, according to Cleveland.com. When the youngster refused, Nhiwatiwa drove off before returning moments later. He then filmed with a cellphone while relieving himself on the girl, Cuyahoga County prosecutors said. The cop left again and the little girl’s mother eventually called Euclid police, who determined Nhiwatiwa was the suspect. He was arrested Tuesday for the sick act and hit with a number of charges, including attempted kidnapping, assault and public indecency, the news site reported. “He will be held accountable,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley said, according to the report. “It’s my office’s mission to ensure he never wears the badge of a polic...

Video; Aaron Judge’s heartwarming meeting with a young fan

Kellen Wilson had long looked up to Aaron Judge, and on Tuesday, he got a chance to do it in person to the 6-foot-7 slugger. The Yankees outfielder, ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Athletics in Oakland, made a point to seek out Wilson, giving him a handshake, a photo and an autograph on the child’s Aaron Judge jersey. The story itself already would be a heartwarming one if were a chance meeting — but it was far from it. Judge sent Wilson a jersey in December, his mother Chelsy told MLB.com, after getting word that Kellen’s father Kyle had suddenly died in October at the age of 36. Like Judge, Kyle had played college baseball at Fresno State. Fast forward to Tuesday night when Kellen, wearing a Fresno State hat, wound up on the field Tuesday night, unaware he was about to have the encounter of his young lifetime. “He [Kellen] had no idea, though [that he was going to meet Judge],” Chelsy said. “And we had no idea. And when the Yankees didn’t take batting practice, they though...

Yankees officially put Deivi Garcia in minor league bullpen

Top Yankees prospect Deivi Garcia is officially auditioning for a role with the major league club. The Yankees instructed Triple Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to move the 20-year-old starter to the bullpen, manager Jay Bell told reporters Wednesday.  “It’s a couple different reasons,” Bell said. “One, just to preserve pitches and that kind of stuff. But they also want to see if he’s an option in New York in September. So, we’ll see what happens there.” Earlier this month, GM Brian Cashman said Garcia would come out of the bullpen if promoted to the Yankees. It’s a role Garcia told The Post two weeks ago he’d be “confident” in handling, and has performed in three times in 2017. Signed for $200,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2015, Garcia has risen quickly through the farm system this season and is a candidate to be called up once MLB rosters expand to 40-men on Sept. 1. The 5-foot-9 right-hander, who in June struck out 15 in a six-inning outing with Double-A Trenton, initially st...
