Markets rebound after China indicates it will stabilize yuan

Investors breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday as stocks rebounded after suffering their worst day of 2019 Monday. The S&P 500 snapped a six-day losing streak to end the day up 1.3 percent while the Dow Jones industrial average climbed 311.78 points, or 1.2 percent, to end the day near session highs at 26,029.52. The Nasdaq popped 1.4 percent. Tuesday’s turnaround was spurred by China indicating that it won’t let the yuan fall much below the 7-per-dollar level. The yuan’s breach of that level Monday — for the first time in 11 years — sent traders into a panic and the Dow down more than 950 points before closing down more than 767 points. China let the yuan, also known as the renminbi, fall below the psychologically important 7-per-dollar level after President Trump threatened to impose a 10 percent tax on $300 billion worth of tariffs last week. The weaker currency would make Chinese imports cheaper and therefore more desirable. Investors were cheered by the move — but also just...

8chan owner Jim Watkins called to testify before Congress

Online message board 8chan’s fortunes worsened on Tuesday, as the site was once again made homeless by a technical services provider and its owner was called to testify before the US Congress after 8chan was linked to the weekend mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. The House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee demanded that owner Jim Watkins, an American living in the Philippines, testify about 8chan’s efforts to address “the proliferation of extremist content, including white supremacist content.” The committee’s Democratic chairman, Bennie Thompson, and Mike Rogers, the committee’s ranking Republican, sent a letter to Watkins asking him to appear before the committee, noting that the El Paso massacre “is at least the third act of supremacist violence linked to your website this year.” 8chan was offline on Tuesday after Seattle-based Epik became the latest provider to cut ties. In a statement, Epik’s chief executive, Rob Monster, cited concerns about the site’s “inadequate...

Gary Woodland ready for next challenge

Monday at a non-major golf tournament is usually pretty sleepy. Players trickle onto the grounds, check in, get the lay of the land, maybe hit a few balls or roll a few putts. Many of them don’t even turn up at the course until Tuesday for a practice round. Gary Woodland wasn’t just at Jersey City’s Liberty National Golf Club on Monday in advance of this week’s Northern Trust, the first of three FedEx Cup Playoff events. He was grinding. Woodland, the reigning U.S. Open champion, spent five hours on the practice range with his swing coach, Pete Cowan, trying to regain the form that helped him win his first career major championship in June at Pebble Beach. Since that win, Woodland has played three tournaments — missing the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic two weeks after the U.S. Open, missing the cut at the British Open two weeks ago and tying for 55th last week at the Wyndham Championship. That’s why he was on the range on Monday and back on Tuesday for about an hour before pl...

Dayton shooter was armed counter-protester at KKK rally earlier this year: report

Dayton mass shooter Connor Betts was reportedly spotted carrying a gun and protesting at a Ku Klux Klan rally earlier this year. The 24-year-old was among the 500 to 600 counter-protesters who attended the May 25 event in opposition of the KKK, according to the Dayton Daily News. He spoke briefly with a reporter — wielding a semi-automatic, AR-style gun similar to the one he used in this past weekend’s shooting, the newspaper says. Betts was wearing sunglasses and a bandanna at the time, which reportedly covered his face. There were only nine KKK members in attendance for the rally. Betts, a registered Democrat who was said to have been pro-gun control, slaughtered nine people this past weekend and wounded dozens more outside a string of bars in Dayton. He was shot and killed by police. Authorities have said that Betts “was exploring violent ideologies” before the shooting. Former classmates described him as a sick and twisted individual, who often talked about torturing and kill...

Mets searching for second base options after Cano injury

The Mets don’t have an everyday answer to replace Robinson Cano, who’s out indefinitely with a torn left hamstring, at second base, which is why Joe Panik being designated for assignment by the Giants could be a factor for them. The second baseman is in the midst of another down season with San Francisco, but the Long Island native and former St. John’s star might be worth a consideration. Sources said the Mets hadn’t yet made a decision on whether to take a serious look at the 28-year-old, who was cut loose by the Giants after they traded for the Reds’ Scooter Gennett. Panik is making $3.8 million and unlike last season, when players on waivers could still be traded, that’s no longer the case. He can either be claimed and the team that picks him up will have to pick up his salary — or clear waivers, be released and be available as a free agent. Asdrubal Cabrera had been a consideration before the former Met, designated by the Rangers last week, signed as a free agent with the Nat...

Disney shares drop 5 percent in high-spending third quarter

Disney shares tumbled 5 percent in after-market trading Tuesday as the Mouse House missed Wall Street’s third-quarter profit and revenue expectations. Chief Executive Bob Iger said the company’s results were weighed down by its merger with Twenty-First Century Fox, despite the fact that the Disney has earned a whopping $8 billion at the box office so far this year. “Our third-quarter results reflect our efforts to effectively integrate the Twenty-First Century Fox assets to enhance and advance our strategic transformation,” Iger said, adding that costs associated with its upcoming streaming service Disney+ also pulled down results. Disney acquired the entertainment assets of Fox for $71.3 billion earlier this year, a move that gives it a trove of content for Disney+, which launches in November for $6.99 a month. Iger noted that his firm produced five of the six global top-grossing movies this year. Earnings fell 28 percent, to $1.35 a share, while revenue rose 33 percent, to $20....

‘Students for Trump’ co-founder pleads guilty to wire fraud

He’s a student for Trump — who can’t vote. “Students for Trump” co-founder John Lambert pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud for illegally pocketing nearly $50,000 by pretending to be a lawyer online. “Are you aware you are not an attorney?” Manhattan federal court judge Valerie Caproni asked the baby-faced fraudster before accepting his guilty plea. “Yes, your honor,” the 23-year-old replied. Lambert told the judge he and another unnamed person were guilty of “representing we were qualified lawyers and providing legal services” to victims. The Tennessee-born college student said he spoke with a victim in Manhattan while he was in North Carolina during the August 2016 to April 2018 scheme. While he was running the scam, Lambert was appearing on NBC and Fox News in support of President Trump’s 2016 run for office. Lambert went by the name “Eric Pope” and pretended he’d graduated from NYU law school, while outfitting his fake website with bi...

Yankees’ Gleyber Torres exits game days after injury scare

BALTIMORE — The Yankees hit three homers in the top of the third Tuesday night and then watched All Star second baseman Gleyber Torres leave a second game in three days. Torres was removed from Sunday night’s game against the Red Sox and taken to a New York hospital for tests to see what caused discomfort in the right groin area. Monday he mentioned he had a test for a possible hernia but was in Monday night’s lineup as the DH and went 0-for-5. Torres fouled out and whiffed in the first two at-bats Tuesday. Breyvic Valera replaced Torres at second base. Snapchat to invest $1B to beef up augmented-reality features

Snapchat knows how much its users love vomiting rainbows and seeing what they’d look like as the opposite gender — so it plans on giving them more. The parent company on Tuesday said it will raise $1 billion in short-term debt to beef up Snapchat, including more augmented reality. The cash will be also used to invest in more media content as well as to possibly acquire other companies, said Snap, which is run by Chief Executive Evan Spiegel, the husband of supermodel Miranda Kerr. “I think this is a company that’s going on the offensive in terms of their growth initiatives,” Wedbush analyst Dan Ives told The Post. “They see a window of opportunity, and they’re going after it. ” Indeed, the company last month said revenue jumped an impressive 50 percent in the second quarter thanks to new augmented-reality lenses that went viral. One of its most popular lenses lets users reverse their gender in photographs — giving women short hair and a five-o’clock shadow and showing men what the...

Three Texas tourists drown during Turks and Caicos Islands vacation

Three Texas tourists, including a married couple, drowned during a vacation to the Turks and Caicos Islands, authorities and reports said Tuesday. The couple, Irma Barrera, 33, her husband Roy Perez, 38, were vacationing with their 15-year-old daughter and the third victim and his daughter, when disaster struck Monday on the island of Middle Caicos, according to police and KTRK-TV. The group was exploring scenic Bambarra Beach when the adults got caught in a fast-moving tide fueled by strong winds, according to police and local reports. Rescuers were able to pluck the girls from the water, saving them. Shortly after the incident, Barrera’s body washed up ashore. Search crews scouring the beach found Perez a few hours later. The body of the third man, who hasn’t been publicly identified, was recovered Tuesday morning, with the help of the US Coast Guard. Police Commissioner Trevor Botting told Agence France-Presse the incident was a “terrible tragedy.” Family members of Barrera ...

‘I refuse to be an accessory’ to El Paso visit

Texas Congresswoman Veronica Escobar has “declined” an invitation to join President Trump during his upcoming trip to El Paso — saying she “refuses to be an accessory to his visit” — in the wake of the Walmart shooting. “The White House invited me to join @realDonaldTrump during his visit to El Paso. My response was clear,” tweeted Escobar on Tuesday night . “I declined the invitation because I refuse to be an accessory to his visit. I refuse to join without a dialogue about the pain his racist and hateful words & actions have caused our community and country.” The Democratic lawmaker, who represents El Paso, said she “requested a phone call” with Trump earlier in the day in order to share what she’s been hearing “from many constituents, including some who are victims of Saturday’s attack” — but the president refused to speak to her. “My message would’ve been that he needs to understand that his words are powerful and have consequences. Using racist language to describe Mex...

Mets’ Jeff McNeil introduces viral puppy

Mets fans, meet Willow. Willow, meet Mets fans. Jeff McNeil and his wife, Tatiana, along with North Shore Animal League, made the introductions before Tuesday’s game against the Marlins. Jeff McNeil met the puppy when the Mets hosted an event with the Animal League before their July 26 game against the Pirates. After he homered in that night’s game, his attempt to convince his wife, Tatiana, to adopt the puppy went viral. The couple made the call to do just that. “First time one of the Mets has adopted from us,” Kathleen Lynn, the director of communications for the Animal League, said in one of the most adorable press conferences ever held at Citi Field. “We did it as like a feel-good moment. Of course you always hope that somebody will adopt, and as we always say, every time you adopt, you save two lives. The one you take home and the one you can rescue and put in its place. So we thank Jeff and Tatiana so much.” McNeil assured reporters that the Mets’ 10-1 record since he met Wi...

Dayton gunman’s dark online footprint reveals far-left leanings

Dayton killer Connor Betts’ online footprint provided a glimpse Tuesday into his dark thoughts and far-left political leanings — even as investigators worked to pin down a concrete motive for the massacre. “Millenials have a message for the Joe Biden generation: hurry up and die,” read a message retweeted hours before the shooting by Twitter account @iamthespookster, believed to have belonged to Betts. The account, yanked offline in the wake of the early Sunday bloodbath, included multiple selfies that strongly resemble the 24-year-old, and a bio section that reflected what few details have emerged of his personal life, including “he/him / anime fan / metalhead / leftist.” It’s capped with a dire declaration: “I’m going to hell and I’m not coming back.” The account fired off thousands of messages — including some supporting presidential hopeful senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, and the sometimes violent Antifa, or anti-fascist, movement — since it was created in 2013, ...

Darryl Roberts’ strong showing continues

Here is our daily practice update from Jets training camp: Something good No. 2 cornerback Darryl Roberts’ strong training camp continued. He broke up a pass for Robby Anderson over the middle in team drills and played tight coverage for most of the morning, rarely letting receivers get separation from him. Something bad Trenton Cannon fumbled at the goal-line, a potentially costly mistake for the backup running back who could be looking for a new home come cutdown day. Remember, new general manager Joe Douglas has no connection to the sixth-round pick of a year ago. Caught my eye Undrafted rookie Greg Dortch could end up making the team as the punt returner, but he made an impact Tuesday in the passing game, with three receptions, including a touchdown. The 5-foot-8 wideout has a knack for getting open. Injury report WR Quincy Enunwa didn’t finish practice, tweaking his groin during one-on-drills. DL Leonard Williams (hip) missed his second straight practice. Coach Adam Gase ...

Dem hopeful Julian Castro’s twin outs Texas Trump donors

The Trump 2020 campaign demanded Tuesday that Rep. Joaquin Castro – the twin brother of 2020 White House hopeful Julian Castro – delete a tweet that publicly named and shamed some of the president’s biggest Texas donors in advance of his visit to El Paso on Wednesday. “How low have Dems sunk?” Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh tweeted . “This is Joaquin Castro, Congressman & chair of his brother’s campaign. Naming private citizens & their employers, targeting them for their political views and exercising 1st Amendment rights.” Murtaugh said that at the very least Castro “is inviting harassment of these private citizens. At worst, he’s encouraging violence.” “This is a target list,” he added. Castro tweeted a list of the 44 San Antonio donors who contributed the maximum to Trump. It included their names and employers. “Sad to see so many San Antonians as 2019 maximum donors to Donald Trump,” Castro wrote, then naming some of the contributors. “T...

‘Home Alone’ reboot in the works at Disney

Nineties kids are gonna scream. The troublemaker comedy “Home Alone” is getting a reboot, thanks to Disney. On an earnings call today, Disney head Bob Iger announced that the classic franchise is among those getting the reboot treatment for the company’s streaming platform, Disney+, which is expected to launch this November, comicbook.com reports. The “Home Alone” franchise, which first premiered in 1990, followed the misadventures of kiddo Kevin McCallister after his family forgets to bring him on their Christmas vacation, leaving him to outwit burglars. The movie was a massive success, spawning four sequels in theaters and television. Iger said on the call that the movie would be “re-imagined for a new generation,” along with other childhood favorites including “Night at the Museum,” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” It’s unclear still whether the “Home Alone” reboot will feature its star, Macaulay Culkin, who’s been keeping busy trolling Hollywood during awards shows. But he was spo...

This miracle injection actually might help you lose weight

There’s no such thing as a miracle weight loss pill — but there is an injection for that. Researchers at the Imperial College of London gave obese people a “medical bypass” — injecting them with the same hormones produced after gastric bypass surgery — and found the patients lost on average nearly 10 pounds in just four weeks. The findings suggest that people with obesity can reduce their weight without having to undergo invasive surgery — also decreasing their risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease. “This result shows that it is possible to obtain some of the benefits of a gastric bypass operation without undergoing the surgery itself,” lead author Professor Tricia Tan noted, according to News Medical. Previous research by the Imperial College of London found gastric bypass surgery is so effective because it produces three hormones originating in the bowels in higher levels — reducing appetite and causing weight loss. Fifteen patients were injected with the same hormone combin...
