Trumaine Johnson’s $72.5 million won’t save his Jets’ starting job

The Jets may have a $72.5 million cheerleader on their hands. On the heels of high-priced cornerback Trumaine Johnson getting benched Monday night, Adam Gase was effusive in his praise of the cornerbacks who did play and declined to say Johnson would start Sunday against the Patriots. “It just hasn’t worked out as well as we need it to,” the Jets’ coach said on Wednesday. “The good thing is we got a long ways to go.” Nate Hairston replaced Johnson, who was repeatedly beat in the opener against the Bills and struggled in his first year with the Jets, and performed well in his place. Johnson only got in the game when Hairston cramped up. “Of course I’m upset, but at the same time my main focus is bigger than this,” Johnson said. “It’s winning games.” He didn’t receive any clarity from the coaching staff on what he needs to do to reclaim his job. Johnson admitted he didn’t play well in the first game, not making some plays he usually makes. Clearly, his salary won’t save him. “Tha...

Face-filtering to be banned on Plenty of Fish

No fake photos allowed. Dating Web site Plenty of Fish is forcing singles to post more truthful photos of themselves by banning filters from the platform, the company announced this week. The decision follows a survey by the site which found that 70 percent of singles think face-filtered photos are deceptive. The filters make users look more attractive than they really are, or add cute-accessories such as bunny ears. More than half of those surveyed went so far as to say they thought filters should be banned, and a third of respondents said they had passed on messaging a potential match because their photo was too heavily filtered. The dog-ears filter was voted the worst of them all, with bunny ears coming in second and fake sunglasses in third. Those surveyed also admitted that photos are far from the only things they embellish on dating apps — 31 percent confessed to exaggerating their level of education and 45 percent said they had lied about their income. “Singles today are ...

Assemblyman was paid to serve as ‘honorary’ chair of youth group

Bronx Assemblyman and congressional candidate Michael Blake boasted of being an “honorary co-chair” of a national youth nonprofit group — while at the same time getting paid handsomely by the same outfit, critics charge. Blake is listed as honorary co-chair of the New Leaders Council — alongside presidential candidate Julian Castro and U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine — while raking in tens of thousands of dollars for annual consulting work, records show. In his Twitter bio, and other online descriptions, Blake lists the word “honorary” over and over again, with no mention that he was also a paid “consultant” and senior adviser — giving the impression that he was an unpaid volunteer and that his role with the group was solely an altruistic endeavor. In March 2018 Blake invited a cohort of NLC members onto the floor of the state Assembly in Albany, honoring them with a proclamation and a framed certificate and referring to himself as “NLC co-chair.” But in three different 2019 financial disclos...

A Brad Pitt movie and this prog-rock band share the same name

On Oct. 8, fans in New York City will line up to watch Ad Astra. Only instead of Brad Pitt in a space caper, they’ll get four guys from the tri-state area playing noodly prog-rock/fusion jams. What happens when the seemingly obscure name of your band suddenly shares a title with a big mainstream Hollywood movie? The members of Ad Astra are finding out. “We have been getting asked and teased about this since April when the movie was first announced,” Ad Astra guitarist Joe Nardulli tells The Post. “We’ve been having fun saying Brad Pitt contacted us and he’s doing a documentary about the band.” Just scroll through the band’s Facebook page for some choice or confused comments. “I thought Brad Pitt joined the band,” one person writes. “Joe did you get any royalties from the ‘Ad Astra’ movie coming out?” another posts. One fan wearing one of the band’s T-shirts was recently stopped and asked what it had to do with the film. But it’s all good for the quartet of New Yorkers that sta...

Mom arrested for giving 1-year-old daughter heroin, leading to death

A mom in Maine was arrested in connection with the death of her 1-year-old daughter for allegedly giving the child small doses of heroin on numerous occasions to help the baby sleep, according to a report. Kimberly Nelligan, 33, of Bangor is accused of rubbing the addictive opioid on her toddler’s gums about 15 times over the course of two months before the baby died on Oct. 10, 2018, according to court documents obtained by the Bangor Daily News. Nelligan was arrested on Tuesday for the nearly year-old death, which the Maine medical examiner’s office said was caused by acute fentanyl intoxication, the paper said. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid — roughly 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine — which is prescribed to treat severe pain. Illegally, the drug is often mixed with heroin to boost the users “euphoric effects,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During initial police questioning, Nelligan denied using heroin. But she later copped to ...

Overstock’s ex-CEO Patrick Byrne sells all of his shares

Patrick Byrne — the controversial ex-CEO of Overstock — sold all his shares this week. Byrne — who left the discount furniture seller in a cloud of controversy after confessing to a romantic relationship with a Russian spy — said he sold all of his 10-plus percent stake in Overstock — thanks to the company’s short sellers. In a filing after the market closed Wednesday, Byrne said he sold 4.7 million shares between Monday and Wednesday for a little under $100 million. In a blog post, he rattled on about a government conspiracy to help the company’s short sellers as the reason for the sale. “The proximate cause … came when we heard over the weekend that starting last Friday, the Deep State’s pets at the SEC began leaking something to their clients JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman,” Byrne said on his blog. “They leaked that they were going to Bazoomba [destroy] our digital dividend. Once that started getting back to me, I realized this: Whenever I have had any question about wh...

NJ ref who told wrestler to cut dreadlocks barred for 2 seasons

TRENTON, N.J. — A referee who told a New Jersey high school wrestler to cut his dreadlocks or forfeit a match last year was suspended by the state for two seasons Wednesday, and officials also announced mandatory bias training for all referees and coaches involved in high school athletics. Referee Alan Maloney, who is white, told Buena Regional wrestler Andrew Johnson, who identifies as multiracial, that he had to cut his hair or forfeit the match last December. A widely disseminated video showed Johnson’s hair being cut on the sidelines. The state Division on Civil Rights investigation found that Maloney determined that Johnson required a hair covering and gave Johnson the choice of cutting his hair or forfeiting after no covering could be located that satisfied rules governing long hair. The report concluded, however, that various New Jersey wrestling officials had interpreted the rule to apply to various traditionally black hair styles regardless of length. The agreement betwee...

Roy Cohn was more entertaining

Roy Cohn was way more entertaining than the new documentary about Roy Cohn. He was a driving force in Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s hearings searching for communists in the government in the 1950s, the lawyer for both the Gambino and Genovese crime families and he was briefly engaged to Barbara Walters while being secretly gay. The dude also had a collection of toy frogs! Yet the new documentary “Where’s My Roy Cohn?” is mostly interested in the New York lawyer’s work and friendship with Donald Trump (before Trump was president). Even the title is an old quote of Trump’s. While it makes sense that audiences would want to know more about this brash enigma and his connection to the future commander in chief, that’s also the most boring part of the movie. Some fantastic tidbits are revealed in the otherwise straightforward film, though. If you’ve seen “Angels in America,” in which the Cohn character was a sleazy comic villain, you’d be surprised to find out that he was friends with Andy Warh...

De Blasio backs off anti-Semitism ‘right-wing movement’ claim

Mayor Bill de Blasio backed off his previous, head-scratching position that anti-Semitism is “strictly” a right-wing movement while speaking Wednesday about hate   crimes  ahead of the Jewish high holidays. When asked at an NYPD press conference if white supremacy factored into the 60% rise in anti-Semitic hate   crimes  in New York this year compared to last, de Blasio demurred. “I think we see a difference in New York City than in the country as a whole,” he said, admitting that bias incidents against Jews in the city are largely committed by youth and mentally ill people. When asked the same question in June, de Blasio rejected any claim that the left plays a role in anti-Jewish discrimination. “I think the ideological movement that is anti-Semitic is a right-wing movement,” he said then. The mayor also advocated a tough-on-crime approach to bias attacks. “I don’t think anyone has a perfect understanding of why people commit acts of violent hate, but we we ...

Kroger will soon sell ‘longer-lasting’ avocados

Will they live up to the ripe? On Wednesday, Kroger grocery stores rolled out “longer-lasting” avocados to some 1,100 stores across the country. According to Krogers, these extra-hearty fruits “maintain their just-harvested quality longer” than the average avo. Their national domination follows a soft launch in Midwest Krogers stores last year. The secret to this avo’s longevity? They’re dunked in an invisible coating called Apeel — essentially, a blanket of plant-derived fats that lock moisture in and keep oxygen out, delaying spoilage, per Apeel’s website. (The two specific fats mentioned on the site, lipids and glycerolipids, are common food additives that are recognized as safe by the FDA.) Krogers will also start selling limes and asparagus sprayed in the same coating. Just two questions, from a concerned guacamole consumer: One, do they come in mini? And two, does “just-harvested quality” refer to the rock-hard phase during which avocados could double as projectile weapons?...

‘Breaking Bad’ film ‘El Camino’ will hit big screen with secret cameo

“El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” won’t tread lightly. Already set with an Oct. 11 release date on Netflix, the top-secret sequel to the Emmy-winning meth drama will also hit theaters for fans who prefer the big screen over streaming. The forthcoming film will have a three-day run in select theaters the same day it drops on Netflix. “El Camino” will feature 10 characters from the show, including one played by an undisclosed “key castmember” who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, used “a private jet to shuttle in and out of Albuquerque without notice.” The two-hour film, directed by Vince Gilligan, picks up after Walter White’s (Bryan Cranston) foul-mouthed protégé, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), goes on the lam in the show’s dramatic 2013 series finale. Gilligan has been famously hush-hush about the project, telling The Reporter, “I don’t want to open my Christmas presents a week and a half before Christmas.” However, he recently revealed in an interview with The Reporter that Matt...

Donald Trump signs US-Mexico border wall with Sharpie

During a visit to the US-Mexico border wall, President Trump autographed one of the posts of the wall with a Sharpie. Video and online photos show Trump signing a section of the wall in Otay Mesa, California following a press conference there. “At invitation of the construction personnel, Pres Trump pulls out a Sharpie and signs one of the posts of the border wall,” CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller said in a tweet . “Other officials follow suit.” Trump is hyping the completion of some sections of border wall during his 2020 reelection campaign. CC Sabathia’s emotional farewell in likely Yankee Stadium goodbye

If this was the end for CC Sabathia, it didn’t quite go as scripted, but the lefty walked off the mound to a standing ovation in The Bronx and a receiving line from his teammates in front of the Yankees’ dugout. Sabathia showed flashes of excellence — especially in the second inning, when he struck out the side in order — but he struggled in the third inning and left after just 2 2/3 innings with his postseason status still uncertain. Sabathia gave up five hits, two earned runs and struck out four. What can be sure is Wednesday night was the 39-year-old’s final regular-season start at Yankee Stadium as he heads into retirement. Sabatia could still end up on the playoff roster, perhaps in tandem with Domingo German, who took over for Sabathia for a second straight outing and got out of the inning. Sabathia allowed a bunt single to David Fletcher to lead off the game and made a diving attempt to get to the ball. The Angels got to him in the third with RBI singles by Albert Pujols ...
