Cain Velasquez to wrestle for Lucha Libre AAA at Garden

Cain Velasquez is coming to New York to fight — in a wrestling ring.

The former UFC heavyweight champion turned wrestler has signed to be a part of Mexico-based promotion Lucha Libre AAA’s two shows in the United States this year, according to ESPN.

That includes the Sept. 15 event at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. The second will be on Oct. 13 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. There has been no official announcement of Velasquez being a part of either show.

The 37-year-old Velasquez, whose last UFC fight was a loss to Francis Ngannou in February, made his wrestling debut on Aug 3 at AAA Triplemania and drew praise for his work during a six-man-tag-team match that included All Elite Wrestling’s Cody Rhodes.

Velasquez, whose UFC contract allows him to participate in pro wrestling, is a big draw in Mexico and Triplemania drew an average of more than 1.6 million viewers on TV Azteca.
