Something good
The defense was only moving at half-speed, but that did not stop rookie WR Darius Slayton from hauling in a long pass from Daniel Jones. Slayton’s speed is evident and he is getting close to full health following a hamstring issue. Pat Shurmur said Slayton is right on the cusp of being able to make his preseason debut Thursday night in Cincinnati.
Something bad
This was a carded practice, so not much can be gleaned from it. On one play, a tight-end screen was called and Eli Manning tossed the ball to Evan Engram, who reached up and had the ball slip through his hands. It was a slight concentration lapse by Engram, who had too many of them last season. It is an area he knows he must clean up.
Caught my eye
It looked as if CB Janoris Jenkins was laboring a bit on another hot day. He appeared frustrated with his performance and as he came off the field and strolled to the side, he took the water bottle he was drinking and fired it to the grass. Just then, a trainer came by to scoop up the bottle and Jenkins quickly apologized for discarding it the way he did.
Keeping up with the Jones
It is how Daniel Jones reacted off the field that was most telling on this day. He is so similar to Eli Manning, circa 2004, it is almost eerie. Jones refused to take the bait and shoot back at Baker Mayfield after the Browns quarterback questioned his ability to win in a magazine article. Giants ownership goes to sleep at night comforted that Daniel Jones is the kind of guy it wants leading the team once Manning has left the building.
Medical report
CBs Sam Beal (hamstring) and Antonio Hamilton (groin) spent time on the side with trainers. Do not expect either to play versus the Bengals. Rookie OL George Asafo-Adjei remains in the concussion protocol.
