Giants are moving on from Odell Beckham’s constant railing

The Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr. away for a variety of reasons and none of them had to do with his immense talent. Much of it had to do with weighing how much his ability as a receiver balanced with the distractions he created and the annoyance factor he injected into the front office and coaching staff.

The final conclusion was the Giants felt they were better off moving on without him and agreed to a deal with the Browns that brought back two draft picks and safety Jabrill Peppers.

It was a business decision that certainly had some personal feelings attached to it.

Beckham, it appears, views the trade as one made out of spite.

“This wasn’t no business move,” Beckham said in comments to Sports Illustrated. “This was personal. They thought they’d send me here to die.”

There is life in Cleveland, and the Giants actually sent Beckham to an up-and-coming team with an exciting young quarterback (Baker Mayfield) and allowed Beckham to reconnect with Jarvis Landry, one of his closest friends.

In other anti-Giants sentiments from Cleveland, Mayfield in a GQ article took a shot at Daniel Jones, the quarterback the Giants selected with the No. 6 overall pick, insinuating Jones was not a winner in college (at Duke) and thus should not have been taken so high in the draft.

“Quite frankly, on our list of issues of the day it really doesn’t matter what Odell or Baker said,’’ coach Pat Shurmur said Tuesday. “There’s many other things we should probably be discussing.’’

The Giants received a first-round pick for Beckham that they turned into defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence and a third-round pick that they turned into linebacker Oshane Ximines. Peppers will start at strong safety.

“Again, we wish him well and it was a trade,’’ Shurmur said of Beckham. “We’ve said that all along. I wouldn’t comment on what he feels about the situation.’’

In the Sports Illustrated article, Beckham said he and Eli Manning were “cool’’ even though they “didn’t hang out outside’’ of football. Beckham did not appreciate what he said was a very brief phone call from Giants general manager Dave Gettleman informing him of the trade. Beckham also said he ran so many slant routes with the Giants that opponents were able to call out the route before the snap.

Beckham said the Giants are “stuck in an older mindset’’ and this was not taking shots at them. “Just speaking facts,’’ Beckham said.
