Jets watching Robby Anderson’s calf injury closely

Robby Anderson might not have played in Thursday’s preseason finale anyway, but the Jets wide receiver missed Tuesday’s practice with a calf injury.

Head coach Adam Gase said Anderson is day-to-day while hoping he would be back in time to practice for Week 1 against the Bills.

“I don’t know if it’s concerning,” Gase said. “Any time you have a soft tissue [injury], it’s an unknown. That’s why it’s day-to-day. He’ll keep working on that. Hopefully we get him back for practices and get him a full week and he feels good and we’re ready to roll.”

Anderson is expected to be in for a big season in the new offense, providing Sam Darnold with a deep threat after the two finished last year with a strong connection. In three preseason games, Robinson caught five passes for 92 yards. Josh Bellamy took his spot in the first-team offense at practice.

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson practiced Tuesday for the first time since Aug. 11, when he injured his hamstring. He participated in individual drills and a seven-on-seven period, a positive development as he tries to get ready for the regular season.

“[He] started practice, looked good. Our plan was to let him go a little bit and then bring him back in and finish his rehab inside,” Gase said. “That’s what we did, it worked out the right way the trainers wanted.”

Kyron Brown, another cornerback who had also been out with a hamstring injury, returned as well, taking part in individual and team drills. He intercepted Trevor Siemian for what would have been a pick-six.

For the first time since center Ryan Kalil signed, the starting offensive line practiced together. Guards Brian Winters (shoulder) and Kelechi Osemele (pectoral) returned to team drills to give the Jets a healthy starting five.

“That was a good first step for us,” Gase said. “It seemed like it was pretty smooth.”

Darnold will not play in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Eagles, according to Gase. He said they will be “selective” about who plays, but declined to rule out any other starters until they figure out where they are with injuries to see who can play.

Gase was also noncommittal on tight end Chris Herndon, who would be playing in his final game until October, as he faces a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Jamal Adams dominated a goal-line period near the end of practice. The first-team offense ran five plays from the 2-yard line and got into the end zone just once, on a Herndon catch that Adams hotly disputed. … Safeties Brandon Bryant (concussion protocol) and Rontez Miles (hip) did not practice.
