SEATTLE — The Yankees were notified reliever Cory Gearrin’s toe tap, ruled illegal Monday night by crew chief Sam Holbrook, with plate umpire Manny Gonzalez calling the right-hander for a balk, would not be an issue in the future.
Holbrook said Gearrin wasn’t resetting his left foot with his delivery, which pitchers “are not allowed to do.’’
“It should not be an issue moving forward,” Aaron Boone said. “But it’s something we are going to have to be proactive whether it is the start of the series making sure we are communicating. We have gotten from the league what he is doing should be OK.
“Cory has dealt with this already in May and we feel what he is doing should be acceptable. I’m waiting to still speak with someone. Larry [Rothschild] has spoken with someone from the league. Cory has spoken with people. My understanding is that the umpires have had conversations as well. So hopeful it’s a non-issue.’’
Gearrin was happy to hear he can tap.
“I’m glad it’s settled,” he said. “The last thing you want when you are out there pitching is having this hanging over your head. You want the manager and the pitching coach to have confidence in putting you out there. They can’t roll the dice. So I’m happy they gave us that. We can move forward. I don’t have to worry about it.’’
The Yankees will celebrate Mike Mussina’s induction into the Hall of Fame on Sunday in The Bronx before a game against the A’s.
The first 18,000 customers will receive a Mike Mussina T-shirt. Mussina, a Yankee from 2001 to 2008, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch to his son, Payton. Fans will be able to view and take pictures of Mussina’s Hall of Fame plaque, which will be on display inside Gate 2 from the first pitch through the start of the seventh inning.
