Domingo German unravels as Yankees get ripped by Red Sox

BOSTON — Not every rough outing by a starting pitcher is cause for concern, especially when that pitcher has been as steady as Domingo German.

But it’s also true the right-hander is in uncharted waters.

German entered Friday having already thrown a career-high 132 ¹/₃ innings and a potential limit has been discussed almost since the beginning of the season.

That talk could continue after a 6-1 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

German, coming off two good starts in which he allowed just three runs over 11 innings, had pitched well in three of his previous four outings and allowed just two walks and no hits through the first three innings at Fenway Park.

But he unraveled quickly in the fourth.

Rafael Devers delivered Boston’s first hit, a double off the Green Monster to lead off the bottom of the fourth.

German struck out Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez grounded to second, moving Devers to third. After Andrew Benintendi walked, Brock Holt drilled a hard grounder that got by Gleyber Torres at second for an RBI single to give Boston a 1-0 lead.

Mitch Moreland then sent a three-run shot into the seats in right to make it 4-0.

German left after allowing five runs, all earned, in just 4 ¹/₃ innings. He also walked four.

Meanwhile, a trio of Boston pitchers retired the first 11 Yankees batters of the night until Didi Gregorius laced a double down the left-field line off Marcus Walden with two outs in the fourth. Gary Sanchez followed with a walk, but Edwin Encarnacion whiffed to end the inning.

Brett Gardner got the Yankees on the board with a homer off Andrew Cashner in the fifth, but the situation didn’t improve after German was pulled. Nestor Cortes Jr. came in and gave up a two-run double to Bogaerts.

It was a rough start to the Yankees’ season-long 10-game road trip, which begins with four at Fenway Park against a Red Sox team that’s barely clinging to its postseason chances.

The Yankees entered Friday needing a combination of six wins or six Boston losses to eliminate the Red Sox from having a chance to win the division and they can clinch the division with a combination of 12 wins or Rays losses.

They came into the game having won four in a row on the road and four of five overall — as well as 14 of their previous 16 against division opponents.

“I think they’re really hungry,’’ Aaron Boone said before the game of the Yankees’ ability to win consistently throughout this season. “No matter where we are in the season, hunger has carried them well. In a lot of ways, I feel like we have unfinished business.’’

Convicted rapist killer strikes again after getting out of jail

A convicted rapist killer who strangled a teen in 1981 and was suspected of cutting out the eyes out of an earlier victim has been arrested on a new rape charge, six years after he got out of jail.
