Jets’ rusty offensive line will be just fine

Adam Gase said he isn’t concerned about the offensive line’s lack of reps together entering the Jets’ regular-season opener. The unit began practicing together only this week, after right guard Brian Winters returned from a shoulder injury. The group didn’t play in any preseason games as a complete unit.

“I feel really good. When you’ve got veteran players that know how to do it, it’s not rocket science. They are big guys that try to hurt people,” Gase said Friday. “They are veteran players that know what to do that are really good. We’ll be all right.”

Gase said he believes the offensive line is in far better shape now than when training camp began. New general manager Joe Douglas made two additions that improved depth, signing five-time Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil, which moved Jonotthan Harrison into a backup role, and acquiring backup guard Alex Lewis from the Ravens.

“I think one thing that helped us is, it created depth for us,” Gase said. “The additions that have been made since we’ve started this thing, you looked at our O-line when we first started compared to now, it doesn’t even look like the same group. We have depth. If somebody goes down, we have guys that can step in and not lose anything. We have veteran presence in that room. I really like where that room is.”

Andre Roberts won’t be able to exact revenge against the Jets on Sunday.

The Bills’ return specialist, who made the Pro Bowl last year as a Jet but wasn’t brought back, was ruled out Friday after missing the entire week of practices with a quad injury. The 31-year-old Roberts called contract discussions with the Jets “shady” and said part of the reason he signed with Buffalo was to play his former team twice a year. He’ll get another chance to show the Jets what they missed out on in Week 17.

Defensive lineman Leonard Williams said “there’s obviously a lot more on the line” for him this year. Williams will be an unrestricted free agent following the season. But he’s doing his best to tune out the future and worry about the present.

“I’m more focused on where I am right now,” he said. “I’m more focused on practice every day, our opponent this week, the blitzes going in this week. It makes it easier to focus on each game and each week then it is to focus on what’s going to happen at the end of the season.

“That’s so far away from now. Taking care of everything of what I have to take care of each day will get me to that point.”

Wide receiver Robby Anderson (calf), cornerback Trumaine Johnson (hamstring) and return specialist Braxton Berrios (hamstring) were all limited Friday, as they were Wednesday and Thursday, but Gase said he expects them to play.

Convicted rapist killer strikes again after getting out of jail

A convicted rapist killer who strangled a teen in 1981 and was suspected of cutting out the eyes out of an earlier victim has been arrested on a new rape charge, six years after he got out of jail. Christopher “Crazy Chris” Aniades, 62, is being held on an attempted forcible rape charge after he allegedly attacked the victim, according to the city Department of Correction. He’s being held at the Eric. M Taylor Center in Queens on first degree attempted rape, according to the city Department of Correction website. His arrest on Aug. 2 was based on a warrant issued by the state’s Division of Parole. The NYPD and the state DOC said they couldn’t provide details on Aniades’ latest offense. Aniades, who was released on Aug. 20, 2013 after spending more than 30 years in jail, became a poster boy of the violent 1980s in New York, when homicides routinely reached 2,000 a year.
