President Trump on Saturday revealed a previously secret plan for a Camp David summit with the Taliban and Afghan leaders — but said he called it off in the wake of Thursday’s suicide attack in Kabul.
“The major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday,” he tweeted Saturday evening. “In order to build false leverage, they admitted to an attack in Kabul that killed one of our great great soldiers, and 11 other people. How many more decades are they willing to fight?”
On Monday, the administration’s Afghanistan envoy said that 5,000 US troops would pull out of the war-torn country within five months under a deal reached “in principle” with the Taliban — but that the negotiations had not included the Afghan government.
An American service member, a Romanian soldier and 10 civilians were killed Thursday in a car-bomb attack near the American embassy in Kabul that injured 42 passersby, Fox News reported.
